SSD is about 1.5$ per GB, Vita card is more than 3$ per GB, and it gets worse for cheaper cards (5$/GB for 4GB card)

Maybe it's faster than SSD :giggle:

Sony really did pull a fast one on us :|

R&D is probably a bigger factor than all of the above, but the thing about R&D is that it stops being a factor when your final product is ready. You can retrofit the amount to the number of Vitas sold, but it'll keep reducing with each new purchase. For eg if they've spent $100M on R&D then the very first Vita they sell should actually costs just over $100M, after 5M Vitas its 20$ per HW and so on.

all that + retailers margin and it still shouldnt be over 225$ tops.

:loco: ?

R&D, special assembly lines which are Vita specific, actual assembly, production, packaging, transport, dist. margin, retailer margins, marketing & profit.

I've removed a couple of steps in between but the whole chain adds a pretty big chunk though BOM should be the biggest chunk. If only BOM was considered we'd be getting games for 100 bucks tops.

The cost is to be distributed amongst the number of Vitas they expect to sell in total and the first year, hence the initial price.
