Right
Hi, Off late I am getting to do a lot of traveling within the city, and not being native of Hyderabad makes this most uncomfortable. And then I have to rely on one of things I hate most, asking people for directions. To make the matters worse, one of the occasions these fellas sent me in totally different direction, I mean how pathetic is that to get a minute of fun and putting the poor guy in misery for an hr. Anyway, to put an end to all this, I am thinking of getting a GPS Nav, I have been told the Satguide is a good Nav but I really like to know that for sure before shelling out 10Gs on that. I could even settle for any good iPhone app which comes with updated Hyderabad map. I reckon that there aren't many members from Hyd here, so anyone who has been using Navs in Delhi or Bangalore or Mumbai please give the inputs. Right
Akash, the Google maps aren't very convenient to use. Anyway check this app, this is exactly fits my requirement, its not free and ain't cheap either, so I need inputs from someone who has hands-on. http://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/mobile-maps-india-gps-navigation/id330645473?mt=

winny29
I use MapMyIndia and can confidently say they are really good. It has all the things you can possibly look for in any map: directions, POI's, petrol pumps, hotels, restaurants, extremely good statistics like Time to go, distance to go, estimated time of arrival and many many more. The only downside: Price
Right
Thanks Winny, how are the map updates? Frequent/infrequent? Does it show diversions/alternate routes? What about areas located in old city? And biggest question, any audio signal like take left NOW!? Sorry, so many question, but I really really like to have Nav... Shantz
Yes, can take one from work. Which one do you recommend? And this looks quite decent too. Take any..It should work nicely on any phone with > 2.2. Forget about navigon etc. No one has more PoIs than google maps. But the only thing is that gmap navigation has sub-par voice because the hack isn't complete. So, sometimes you might get voice instructions late or they might repeat. But put it on your dashboard with a car mount near steering and it will work fine.

But put it on your dashboard with a car mount near steering and it will work fine. Google Maps 5.10 itself (not just Brut Maps) has been hacked to allow voice navigation worldwide. So get it from here : http://www.softwares360.com/android/google-maps-5-10-free-with-world-navigation-activated/ and read page 231 onwards on the XDA thread. it's the Brut maps thread but has the link for the download that worked on my Nexus S on page 233 ... some tigersdown.com or something like that --> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=630887&page=231 Besides lower data usage with GMaps 5.10 + this nav hack cos you'll be using vector maps (while Brut won't since it's on 4.6). Try it, voice nav worked perfectly for me. Note though that only Brut will let you rip map tiles off the net onto your SD card and use them totally offline. Of course you'll still need a network connection at the start of your journey to map out the route and check points of interest.

Right
Shantz, >2.2 means 2.3 only I can take. Desire HD it is then, let me try it, over this weekend.
Shantz
^^ sorry i meant >=2.2.. so even a nexus one should work. My brother used it some time back on a milestone with 2.1 though and there also it was fine.
winny29
Answered inline: Thanks Winny, how are the map updates? Frequent/infrequent? Updates are generally in 6 months but they are paid. Not sure if they have a lifetime option. Does it show diversions/alternate routes? It does do that. It calculates the new routes automatically What about areas located in old city? AFAIK, the pretty well cover every portion of major cities. And biggest question, any audio signal like take left NOW!? Oh yes, a sweet voice will guide you through every turn. . Even on slide nudges it tells you which side to take. Sorry, so many question, but I really really like to have Nav...

Solitaire
1. That version needs root 2. It is from an unknown source. I wouldn't use it unless it's verified that all is well with it. Yeah I guess it does. :| But I've had no real problems with it. The XDA thread pages seem to indicate that the permissions it requires are alright. Anyway, use if you want I guess. We use a MapMyIndia device on the other car though. been using it right from when we got the Cruze over a year ago. And it works pretty well though initial GPS position pickup isn't always instantaneous. Has a number of POIs but not as many as Google Maps. Navigation, however is damn accurate and it has most roads and such. Can find addresses pretty well too. Don't get a Garmin device from MapMyindia though, cos the maps on those are a step behind the latest ones on their own GPS devices. Might I add that the sensitivity on MMI screens is nowhere near what you'll get on an Android or iOS device if that matters to you. And it's a tad slower in general when searching and stuff but that's to be expected.
Shantz
btw, mapquest released a couple of days ago on Android. Haven't used it yet. Try it out as well. It's free anyways.
