Chroma Extended Warranty?

I am just curious as to what exactly Chroma does when they get a PS3? Do they replace it like the Sony Service Centers or repair it?

Has anyone dealt with chroma ?

My PS3 isn't displaying anything on HDMI out . I tried changing the HDMI Cable but it still has the same problem. It works fine with the Component/Composit cable that comes with the PS3.

Since my warranty with sony expired, I am still covered under Chroma's Extended warranty. Please let me know if any of you have got their PS3's fixed under chroma's extended warranty & how was the service.

Check this thread

Thanks cyclops , That thread was very helpful

try resetting your video source, power on the ps3 and keep the power button pressed until it beeps.

and what the ^^mod said incase that doesn't work , but most likely it should ;)

Already did that. At first I used to get video out at lower resolutions using the HDMI, When I would try to switch it to 1080p it would go blank.

Now it would display even at lower resolutions, Only display I get is via component/composit cable.

Judging by what you've mentioned, it seems like a sync/HDCP issue. That is if the HDMI chip is not fried.

BTW--You're display/TV is HDCP compliant right? Is it a straight up HDMI-HDMI connection or HDMI-DVI link(the pin layout causes compatibility problems)?

Anyway, here's what you can do.

Turn you TV on--and put it on the channel(HDMI 1/2/3/ etc) where the PS3 connects.

Make sure the A/V Multi cable is not connected at this point.

Press and hold the power button on the PS3--make sure you keep holding the button until you hear the second beep. This should resolve the problem if it is indeed a handshake/sync problem.

If your display is HDMI compliant, then I would first test the PS3 on a different TV/Display before thinking about invoking warranty.

I have no idea what HDCP is.

I own a Sony 40BX400, PS3 used to work fine before on HDMI. Yes, It is a straight up HDMI to HDMI connection. I even tried using HDMI to DVI with my computer LCD and it has the same problem.

I changed the HDMI Cable, Tried different TV's and also used the HDMI cable to connect my DVD player to the LCD (Which works fine). This only leaves the PS3 at fault.

Yes, I tried this. Only this way I was able to get the PS3 to display on the Component/Composit cable since my PS3 used to work with HDMI before.

Well...it's most likely that the HDMI chip is fried then. You could try doing a factory reset through system settings(maybe it's a software/firmware issue--unlikely though).

Btw, I know you've stated twice in this thread that you've done the display reset thing already. But have you done it exactly like the way I mentioned?(that's the reason I asked you to do it again)

By exactly I mean, to the TEE. When you turn your TV on, the PS3 should have no power(not even standby light). The only thing connected to the PS3 should be the HDMI cable. After you've turned your TV on and set it on the PS3's HDMI display channel--you connect the PS3 to power and then do the hold power button(2 beeps) routine.

If you have done this, or if this doesn't work..then yes..it's time to invoke that warranty

Same thing happened to me back in January. Here's the thread link for full description of my issue: PS3 Display Issue

It seems quite a few people on TE forum are facing this issue on the Slim console. Not sure what triggers it, but the display goes off completely in HDMI mode, but works in composite mode. There is no defined solution. Just wait for it to come back on it's own. An odd phenomenon, but it's definitely the same problem.

I'm still leaning toward thinking it's a handshake issue. If a display shares many PS3's OR if a PS3 travels between many HDMI displays OR if you switch frequently between the HDMI and AV multi connections, then PS3's tend to get confused. Working intermittently or working on some TVs and not others etc.

You should really give that factory reset a try(better if you do it in safe mode).Keeping in mind the exact order/conditions I mentioned in my previous post.

Okay, I did it exactly the way you told me. Now I get display but it flickers. This is almost every second, The screen will beome Grainy (Black and white grains) and then back to normal.

This happens with both my HDMI Wires which work fine with other devices.

Also, It does not support 1080p ... When I try to switch it to 1080p(Only worked once after your procedure with flickering) it goes black and the TV shows "Unsuported Signal, Please check device output". Currently working of 576SD.

See, now we're getting somewhere.

Ok, do this..EXACTLY like I'm going to describe it.

1) Turn your TV on; the PS3 should be completely OFF(not even standby light)

2) Go to the HDMI channel where your PS3 connects to the TV

3) Connect PS3 to wall socket

4) Now press and hold the PS3 power button--keep holding it until the THIRD beep. After which the PS3 would turn itself OFF.

5) Press and hold the power button again--you will hear the first turning ON beep and then a DOUBLE BEEP. This double beep puts the PS3 in safe mode.

6) Release the power button as soon as you hear the double beep.

7) You should see a Menu on your TV screen with some options. Choose the "Restore Default Setting". If that doesn't work then repeat the whole procedure and choose "Restore PS3 System"--THIS WILL DELETE EVERYTHING ON THE HDD--use this only as the last resort after taking a system backup.

After reset, the PS3 should tell you that it has detected an HDMI device, just say yes and let it auto configure the display settings.

IF, your problem does not go away even after this--then we have to troubleshoot this from an entirely different perspective. Thing is, if it was indeed a hardware issue, then the display would not have magically come back after you did what I told you. HDMI either works or doesn't..period. I'm 99% sure this is a software/handshake issue.

Anyway, do what I've said and let me know if it solves your problem. Good luck

EDIT: I haven't done this in a whie, but iirc, the restore function deletes your PSN information from the HDD. So you may have to recover your profile.

Actually I used to get Display Out via HDMI before (as mentioned in the second post) with the same Flickering & Lower Resolution issue as I have now.

How do I backup my sytem before doing a reset? I've got PSN games & DLC's which I cant download again.

Yeah,I read that post of yours. What do you mean to say though? Is it that the HDMI never worked in the first place(or it worked, then started showing these problems)?

Anyway, I'm still hopefull that a restore would cure your PS3 problem. As I mentioned in my post, you only need to do a full backup if you're using the last resort "Restore PS3 System" option. You don't need it if you're using the "Restore Default Settings" option. It's a good habit do take a system backup before doing anything like this though, and I would recommend it.

Try "Restore Default Settings" at the safe mode menu first, then go on to "Restore PS3 System".

As for system backup--you need to connect a FAt32 formatted flash drive or external HDD(USB), go to Settings>System Settings>Backup Utility>Backup.

The backup time depends on the amount of data you have on your system. It's a good measure to remove all Video/Music/Photo files form the PS3(you can always transfer those again). It's also better if you delete all Game Data(not Save Data) form the Game Data utility on the XMB. Note--this will also delete the game updates/patches(your decision to make depending on the kind of broadband plan you have).

That's it, go through the motions and you'll be set.

Let me know how that works out.

  • 3 weeks later...

Sorry for the late reply.

I got a new PS3 (160gb) with 1 year warranty from Chroma Service center in Chembur. It took 21 days for the replacement.
