Big enough news to deserve its own thread

A senior administration official says Obama gave the final order for U.S. officials to go after bin Laden on Friday. The official added that a small team found their quarry hiding in a large home in an affluent suburb of Islamabad. The raid occurred in the early morning hours Sunday.

Administration officials offered some details of the operation.

Based on statements given by U.S. detainees, intelligence officials have known for years that bin Laden trusted one al-Qaida courier in particular and they believed he might be living with him in hiding. In November, intelligence officials found out where he was living, a huge fortified compound in an affluent suburb of Islamabad. It was surrounded by walls as high as 18 feet high, topped with barbed wire. There were two security gates and no phone or Internet running into the house.

Intelligence officials believed the $1 million home was custom-built to harbor a major terrorist. CIA experts analyzed whether it could be anyone else, but time and again, they decided it was almost certainly bin Laden.

Three adult males were also killed in Sunday's raid, including one of bin Laden's sons, whom officials did not name. One of bin Laden's sons, Hamza, is a senior member of al-Qaida.

-Pakistani intel did not have any involvement

-Members of pakistani government were considered involved with Bin Laden and thus were kept in the dark

well this is a serious blow to al quaida ... but I suspect ...there would be immediate repercussions .... At least for some time .. there would be increased attacks around the world. US would be fortified but other "poorer" Nations like a few EU countries and India would be the soft targets ...

But i wonder what will the presidential candidates do after loosing one of the major Campaign Attraction ... War Againast Terror ... :scratchchin:

To those suggesting that it's a bad thing to accord due process for suspected terrorists - consider it in this light.

One of the cornerstones of a liberal democracy is the rule of law and due process. To accord this to those who would choose to subvert these very characteristics is a sign of the strength of the liberal democracy we live in. It's something to be applauded, not maligned.

My personal view is that summary execution would be the greatest insult to those who died in the terrorist incidents of November 26. It would represent a notch on the terrorists' bedposts. What are we defending, if in defence we move away from the ideals which underpin our society?

Err...Kasab was captured and he was the last surviving member of the terrorist squad which no one had any info on, so they had to keep him alive for interrogation...he was not a most wanted terrorist/criminal, but rather just a random grunt who no one knew of and hence he was able to exploit our judicial system. Osama OTOH was the self proclaimed leader of the biggest terrorist organization and was on the top of Interpol's most wanted list for 10 years straight.

Its comparing apples to oranges.
