Watch OS 3 has more or less corrected the sluggishness of the Series 1. The advantages of series 2 will be water resistance, and GPS. But if you aren't gonna go swimming or for a job, Series 1 will suffice. The battery life is the same and will last just about a day. The price when Series 2 gets here will be in the 30-36k mark. Gen 2 apple watch (releasing tmrw) has two variants series 1 and series 2. I agree that series 1 is sufficient for most but I think the recent sales saw retailers clearing stock of gen1 apple watch.
