Sherry Jose
Hi Guys, I am planning to buy a new Modem now, because the modem given by BSNL suxx big way. The requirements are, 1) I should be able to play online games without lag, i have a 512 KBPS connection with BSNL and want to make the best use of this bandwidth. 2) I want to stream HD movies in my PS3 mostly mkv files from my laptop (Blame FAT32 in PS3). I have tried this with my current modem and it was an epic fail. 3) Should be really easy to setup, since i am a noob in networking 4) Most importantly, the price should not exceed 4K. Looking for some nice suggestions from you guys

Nikushimi
A new modem isn't going to increase your internet speed or reduce lag. About streaming, what program do you use? PS3 media server? The program has to first encode the movie before streaming it. The higher the resolution the more time it takes to encode them. MKV files also takes a long time to encode. Try streaming a sub HD avi file and check if there is any stuttering. Basically none of your current problems are your modem's fault. For gaming it is best to use wired connection. BSNL Modem is good enough for your Internet connection. Its their connection that sucks and you can do nothing about it. Their pings are usually good but totally inconsistent especially to Indian servers.

Sackboy
Yes it MIGHT be , routing is done by router , hence the name so pings depend on routing .. Though most prolly it's not
Obil
Yes it MIGHT be , routing is done by router , hence the name so pings depend on routing .. Though most prolly it's not Once an IP packet leaves your home router, you can't control the path it travels. The only external entry in your home routers "routing table" will be the one from ISP. But, one of my cousin who is a network engineer told me that the modem might be a reason for this issue. thats the reason i opened this thread You can start troubleshooting by pinging your home router and then your ISP gateway like 2000 times and see if you are missing any packets.
