Winner of the Excellence in design at the What Else But Minecraft Awards 2011 aka IGF, this little timesink has everything you'd want in a roguelike and more. to quote the developers

Desktop Dungeons is a quick-play roguelike puzzle game that gives you roughly 10 minutes of dungeon-crawling action per serving. It straddles the casual and hardcore boundary in that, while you might die frequently because the game is tricky and unforgiving, it’s so approachable and quick to get into that you keep wanting just one more round.

While it may seem silly for a grown man to wax eloquent on a turn-based dungeon crawler rather than ...say a manly manshoot or a ponderous noire game, the little quirks and delights of old school gaming run rich and deep in this game. the time before no saves & randomized maps make it the gaming experience that i've always wanted from my gamefaq's addled brain.

anyone here from the school of tough love a.k.a nethack would know what i am talking about :)

the developers have a freeware version as well as a paid invite for a beta release up (RPS coverage here) Would urge you all to try this one (& spare some love for indies, if you can)
