ARMA III

How much have you paid for BF4? And by that I mean the full game, which will have maybe 1% of the content that Arma 3 will have in it's lifetime.

Actually 1% is probably being too generous.

I judge the value of a game based on how much time I devote to it. If I'm devoting a lot of time, it means I enjoy the content.

And Arma doesn't seem to be my type. Different strokes for different folks.

Also, you have already bought BF4, right?

SURVIVE, ARMA III Single Player's first chunk out now

Arma 3's campaign was AWOL at release. Don't worry, though, it hadn't been captured by the enemy, to be set upon by growling dogs, placed into falling buildings, or attacked by acid-spitting aliens. Instead, it was back at base, undergoing a top secret operation to separate it out in to three chunks, to be freely deployed in stages over the following months. The first of those chunks, codenamed Survive, is air-dropping in now.

A press release sent out by Bohemia Interactive offers more details,

"In Arma 3’s campaign, players take on the role of Ben Kerry, a soldier who is a part of the NATO peacekeeping operation in the Mediterranean. Five years after the bloody civil war in the Republic of Altis & Stratis came to an end, NATO has started to withdraw its forces from the region - unknowingly creating the conditions for a Mediterranean flashpoint. Kerry's unit, 'Task Force Aegis' - together with a clandestine group of UKSF operators - is soon caught up in a situation beyond their control, and trapped in a fight for survival."

"Make ARMA Not War" modding competition launched with $680,000 up for grabs

A total of a half-million Euros (about $680,000 USD) will be be awarded to modders in 2015, with the winners in four categories selected by a panel of about a dozen game industry professionals, community members like Dslyecxi, and Bohemia developers. “Having a competition like this is giving the people something back, essentially. Giving them more serious reasons to show off, to make something out of their hobby,” says Ivan Buchta, Creative Director at Bohemia.

CEO Marek Spanel underlines that the competition is Bohemia’s way of supporting a fundamental part of its franchise.

Ever since Arma: Cold War Assault, we’ve made it a priority to support our community with tools, documentation, and sample models, and Arma 3 is no different. With the integration of Steam Workshop, a refreshed tool suite, updated user licenses, and of course the Make Arma Not War contest, we’re hoping to push things further. It’s clear that, with our open architecture and creative community, much more extra content can be produced. Correspondingly, we’ve seen this affect the longevity of our games: each Arma installment is played actively for years and years after their release.”

Employment and publishing rights, along the lines of what was earned by DayZ creator Dean Hall, also aren’t out of the question for potential winners and entrants to the contest.

It’s a great way for us to find new employees,” says Korneel van ‘t Land, Brand and PR Manager at Bohemia. “They’re training themselves with our tools and technology. We might be able to find talent. The recruitment aspect is also quite important.”

ARMA III hints at new multiplayer content and dares us to, "Dream a little bigger"

2d0l5bq.png

Bohemia designer Karel Mořický has taken to Twitter recently to release the image above and ask players to raise their expectations about what the new multiplayer content might be. "Expecting conquest mode or coop campaign? Dream a little bigger."

The developer update also delves into some of the work being undertaken to improve the game's optimization. Bohemia is testing a new post-processing effect with the potential to boost the visuals while also smoothing out performance on some machines. A new multiplayer build is also being put together:

Bohemia also reported on improved optimisation,

"There finally is some solid movement on the multiplayer optimization front, over the past weeks our programmers, David Foltyn, and several community admins tested the new build quite a bit. They are already reporting significant performance increases, as well as better load-balancing on CPU cores."

Part II, 'Adapt' single-player DLC dispatched

"In the new episode, titled ‘Adapt’, players take on the role of Ben Kerry, a soldier trapped on the island of Altis following a Mediterranean flashpoint.

"While the first part of the campaign introduced players to Arma 3's basic infantry combat and story, episode two opens up the military sandbox further, challenging players to adopt guerrilla tactics in the face of against a stronger, better-equipped enemy."

ARMA III, Zeus DLC add-on promises a new form of multiplayer

What happens when you combine Arma with D&D? Goblins assaulting Greek islands with M4 Carbines? Possibly, but in this instance, it's a new multiplayer mode in which an Arma 3 player becomes dungeon master of an outfit's military manoeuvres. Zeus is an upcoming free DLC pack that lets an all-powerful player look down upon the others, like some god-like entity in control of a real-time scenario editor.

"Wielding an intuitive real-time editor, you can invent new stories, challenges and locations. The result is always unique, always dynamic combat - for both Zeus and, especially, those with boots on the ground. Your rules, your war."

"The Zeus multiplayer concept works across all familiar multiplayer game types, such as Team Deathmatch and Sector Control, where players can either work with or go up against Zeus."

The most distinctive game type in Arma 3 Zeus, however, is ‘Zeus Game Master’. Here, Game Masters are entirely free to create objectives, spawn units, and steer players across Arma 3’s massive Altis and Stratis terrains.

ARMA III's 'Zeus' MODE detailed

Get a sense of the power and user-friendliness of the Zeus interface in this lengthy Bohemia Interactive livestream, in which the developers drop interesting tidbits. There can be multiple 'Zeus' players, for example, and Zeus mode will work with mods if you set up a modded scenario beforehand. An exciting new idea for a shooter mode, and free for owners of Arma 3 once it's out of beta.

ARMA III's final campaign DLC ' WIN' launched

It might be a little easier to win with Win, thanks to some new aircraft: the A-164 Wipeout, To-199 Neophron and A-164 CAS jet. There's also a new Tempest transport truck, which despite the name doesn't transport classic arcade games but rather medical, fuel or ammo cargo. New points of interest have been added to the map too, including an athletics stadium and hotel compound.

ZEUS multi-player mode releases

One player is the overlord of a multiplayer mission, placing hazards, moving enemies, and creating an on-the-fly dynamic scenario for the ground troops to deal with. It provides a distinctly human element of unpredictability, which should make for plenty of exciting encounters.

As well as the blank canvas of "Game Master" mode, an all-seeing Zeus can also be present in co-op, team deathmatch and Sector Control modes, as well as in player-created scenarios from the Steam Workshop.

For owners of Arma 3, Zeus has been automatically added through Steam.

ARMA III sells 1 million copies, releases Kart DLC

Arma 3 looks to have struck a chord in the hearts and minds of PC gamers since its release last year. The military sim has sold one million copies, according to an announcement this week by Bohemia Interactive head Marek Spanel.

Arma 3 Karts began life as an April Fools' joke, but as sometimes happens, fans thought it was actually a pretty cool idea. So Bohemia Interactive decided to run with it, and the result is Arma 3 Karts, released today as an honest-to-goodness DLC pack for the famed military shooter, with a portion of sales going to charity.

To be clear, this is exactly what it appears to be: Go-kart racing in Arma 3. Players will trade in their H&K G36 for a four-stroke, 20 horsepower kart with four selectable liveries (which is a fancy way of saying "paint jobs") and matching driver models with appropriate racing headgear. Various new objects useful for creating racetracks have been added to the game, as has a Race Marshal, who will ensure that all necessary safety precautions have been taken—probably not a bad idea when kart racing in a war zone. In keeping with the game's roots, there's even a new weapon: a starter pistol! It shoots flares, too, because what good is a videogame gun without an alt-fire mode, am I right?

Unfortunately, Bohemia has decided to sell a season pass and changed how they do DLC.

In Arma 2, when they released content, it was free for everyone. But they sold the DLC packs as well. Those who bought it had higher quality assets available to them. Those who didn't could still play with lower quality assets.

Now they've changed it. Everyone has access to the same quality of content, but only those who pay will be able to use it in game. For example, let's say there are two players in the game. One of them purchased the DLC and the other didn't. The person who purchased the DLC will be able to fly the DLC helicopter but the person who didn't will get a buy button when he tries to enter the pilot seat.

Celebrate a million sales by following EA business practices :(
