spindoctor
the game 'officially released' this morning. downloaded and played it, it's definitely more fun than it was at beta. worth looking into, especially since it's free to play. the client download is about 2.6gb. and if anyone is thinking of getting it, grab a free spinfusor code from here http://massively.joy...w-weapon-on-us/ the gun takes over 40,000 xp to unlock otherwise, and trust me that takes a while. If looking for a game sometime, look me up - WingedReturn. yea i do from time to time. it's actually quite faithful to tribes in terms of gameplay. nice large maps too (although they need more and the maps themselves need more detail). pretty high skill cap too, so you know that simple people won't get it the problem with the game is their monetization plan. grind forf**kingever to unlock new classes and weapons and upgrades or pay real money to buy them. they really, really do everything they can to make people pay them for it and it borders dangerously close to pay to win at the best of times. right now they've released a completely overpowered weapon and that can only be bought with money (unless you have sh*t tons of xp banked) and the game is completely unbalanced because of it. this is the very definition of a pay to win game. i can see myself spending some time with the game because it is genuinely fun to play, but all this bullshit means it'll never become anything more than a distraction. Though I can say that I agree for the most part, in my opinion, it's much better than other F2P games out there. Why? Because every last weapon/armor/class can be unlocked with XP i.e. for free. Sure, you need sh*t loads but it's a substitution for real money right? Why I'm saying it's better is because in most other F2P games, some objects can be unlocked using only "GP" i.e. real money. spindoctor
in my opinion, it's much better than other F2P games out there. i don't find that thought very comforting. especially since i'm not a great player of the game anyway. the best game i've had, i got around 3k xp. a good game is 1.5-2k xp. a bad/losing game can be 1k xp. one weapon can cost anywhere between 100,000 to 170,000 xp. for a person like me who plays 2-4 games in a day, it will take me a month of playing just to unlock one weapon. one weapon out of how many? with how many classes? with 4 upgrade slots per loadout slot which also need to be bought with xp? even if you pay the minimum 10$ for the 50% extra permanent xp, you're still looking at weeks and months of grinding. and they'll keep adding stuff faster than you can ever unlock it. as a free player, you're perpetually f**ked. i'm not averse to paying for games that i enjoy, and in fact i'd say that i've played it enough already to make it worth putting down the 10$ minimum, but this business model really puts me off. if they had gone the tf2 way, i would already have paid them but instead they choose to sell upgrades with money. or if they had an option where you can buy the 'full game' with everything unlocked for 30$ or even 40$ i'd probably go for that. but they have nothing like that... and that's because, to unlock everything in the game as of right now, you need to spend more 150$. and that number is only going to increase with time. Yeah, you've made a good point there. But the thing is, you dont need to unlock everything. Try out a few classes and see what suits you best. I've unlocked the Brute, Infiltrator and the Sentinel and I don't feel the need to unlock anything else right now. The objective of playing isn't to unlock stuff but to actually play. The 'full game' model won't make them half the money this one will. Sadly enough, we're the ones getting exploited.
spindoctor
i've heard that argument as well. you have different classes and different roles and different weapons for variety. it's what makes games interesting and adds longevity. i'm sure wolf 3d could be finished with a single gun, or quake 3 could have used just the rocket launcher, or battlefield 3 could have used just the m16, but what would be the point of that? why even have unlocks and alternative weapons if you don't actually need them? give everyone a spinfusor in tribes and tell them that's enough, they don't need anything else and it would be true. but it wouldn't be nearly as fun. the argument that you can just focus on a few classes and be happy with that sidesteps the real problem of how difficult it is to get all the classes without paying. it's literally the same thing as saying "be happy with less". i don't think that's a valid position.
