John Carmack Says Mobile Devices Will Overpower Xbox 360, PS3 By 2013

So, two years from now apparently iPads, iPhones and other mobile devices will out-power the current generation consoles. Well, that’s what id Software’s Technical Director John Carmack says.

In an interview with IndustryGamer Carmack let loose some interesting thoughts on the current state of the technological revolution happening within the mobile arena, saying…

"People have exaggerated the relative powers - the iPad2 is not more powerful than the 360. It's still a factor of a couple weaker. But the fact that it’s gotten that close that fast - that means that almost certainly, 2 years from now, there will be mobile devices more powerful than what we're doing all these fabulous games on right now."

Take note, though, Carmack is not an industry analyst and he’s just flexing his thoughts on an idea derived from how fast the industry landscape is changing. Nevertheless, developers and publishers alike are growing weary of working with the Xbox 360 and PS3. Ubisoft and Codemasters have made that abundantly clear.

In the case of DICE they already have Frosbite 2.0 primed and ready for the next generation…the same goes for Epic Games and NaturalMotion. I suppose, countless other developers out there who build their own engines and middleware solutions are more than ready for the next wave of home console technology; they just have to wait for the technology to arrive.

Carmack also noted another interesting aspect about the way hardware can sometimes run ahead of the software, saying…

"That’s one of the things that we do discuss internally a lot and it’s amazing to think that when we started Rage, iOS didn’t exist. There was no iPhone. All of that has happened just in the space of one project development timeline. And that’s a little scary when you think about it, because major landscape change could be happening underneath our feet as we work on these large scale projects,"

I’m completely fascinated at the prospect of our technological age, especially taking into consideration that you could be out of the loop for less than a month and feel like you’ve been left a generation behind.

More than anything, it also makes you question just how the heck Microsoft and Sony will future proof their next-generation consoles? I mean, the only surefire way to do that is to go the route of the cloud. But I doubt Microsoft or Sony are ready for that.

Carmack may not be an industry analyst, but he's got more knowledge of the industry than the 'analysts'. The analysts just crunch numbers and depend on info from people like Carmack.

seeing how console game is being taken over slowly by mobile gaming(handhelds/ipads/tablets)...it looks like in very future we will no longer see consoles....

We will see consoles, but in different avatar.

And he is saying the mobile devices will overpower the current gen consoles not the next gen.

No they can co-exist. Mobile gaming has brought many new consumers into gaming, so they are not really eating into other's bussiness but actually creating a new market. Also people who have sold off their consoles are people who don't get time to play games and have found a great alternative in smartphone/tablets. They were not consuming anything at all so it is not a great loss. Home consoles are no longer the dedicated gaming machines, they are also evolving into something more of a total entertainment device. You have to continuously evolve if you have to stay in any competitive feild.

We were having handhelds before also but they didn't eat into home console bussiness. Right now there are just too many devices in smartphone/tablet marketspace that I am not sure which device the devlopers will be able to focus on.

you said it bro...beside lets not forget the number of business mobile games are doing.....so less budget and if it is even decent...you pretty much make a good profit....on the other hand console gaming..just how many studios in just abt year you have heard have closed down .....honestly i think it can only exist to certain extent but when those new customers start coming even old shops(developers) start focusing on new customers.....and we are old customers ....we will have no choice but go with new offerings in the market...it is tbh very clear picture....that in future home consoles will have tough competition from mobile gaming...and to point you out...you are comparing handhelds to consoles...those days handhelds were something else compared to today....todays handhelds can not only give almost home console entertainment and more but best part is they are mobile...you can always carry it with urself......preciously case was different....today almost same tech is in your hands as in your home...

Mobile apps market is also top heavy like the current home console games market :D Only 10% of developers get all the money. Since here most developers are casual developers comercial failures and success doesn't affect them. The platform will certainly not support the kind of budget we have for mainstream home console games right now.

Actually it's not even correct to compare 2011 ka smartphone with 2005 ka home consoles, is it? We see newer revisions of smartphones in a year or six month unlike consoles, if they want to compare processing power compare it with PC. :P

We are getting this type of comments because now the developers want Sony and MS to release next gen consoles aur kuch nahi

Handhelds are usually one generation (4-5 years) behind home consoles, which themselves are a generation behind PCs by the end of their lifecycle. So yeah, Mr. Carmack isn't saying anything new. When new consoles launch, they are usually on par with the latest PC tech, just like new handhelds are on par with current outgoing home consoles.

But the business model has changed the lot....ipads/tablets have entered the market too and they are making their presence felt a lot....previously handheld owners were console gamers too....that is no longer the case today...you can find whole new kinda of gamer on ipads/handhelds also..

But I havent seen anyone buying an iPad or iPhone for the sole purpose of gaming.Dedicated gaming phones like Nokia N-gage & Xperia Play have failed.Hardcore gamers will always buy handhelds for gaming on the move since smartphones arent suitable for playing games for a long duration(since they are touchscreen).

mobile devices are the future, and not just for gaming... productivity, entertainment, social interaction... everything is going mobile. dedicated gaming consoles will stick around because they still make money, but they will lose relevance as the industry turns it's focus to the new market. this is exactly what happened to pc gaming when this gen of consoles came out.

console gamers, welcome to hell.
