Is Sony Quietly Removing a PS3 Feature?

Recommended Posts

A tipster sends us rumored word (and image) of an incoming replacement model for the 160GB Playstation 3 which brings with it a change in the way some people will hook the console up to their HD television.

The new "K" chassis, which Sony will begin shipping to retailers this week, will require customers to use an HDMI cable to play a game or watch a movie in high definition, according to the tipster. The component out, which on all other models supports high definition video modes, will no longer do so, according to a memo apparently sent around at GameStop today.

All future models of the PS3, the memo continues, will require an HDMI cable for high definition output. Previous models will not be updated to require HDMI for high definition viewing.

Finally, as GameStop puts it, offering the HDMI cables to customers picking up a PS3 will "also help you drive add-on sales."

We've reached out to Playstation for comment on the rumor and to ask why, if it's true, the change is being made.

Update: While we still haven't heard from Playstation with an official response, it sounds like this move could have something to do with the AACS Final Adopter Agreement.

Some Kotaku users are not happy...... :P

People like me who bought their HDTV more than 5 years ago. I actually do have my PS3 hooked up via HDMI, but my sound system receiver doesn't have HDMI input/output, just component or less. And the TV only has on HDMI input, so my Xbox 360 is still hooked up by component cables since it's not the one with a Blu-ray drive.

I might get an HDMI hub someday, but that's $$$ I don't need to spend just yet.

I'm not sure whether I consider this a presumptive move or an a*s move on Sony's part. This better at least come with a price cut. Removing Linux was one thing, but removing a standard video transmission format? Seriously, Sony?

I do. My PS3 and my HDTV won't work together for some freaking reason. I've tried EVERYTHING. Double beep, system restore, everything. The PS3 won't work with my sony bravia. I've connected the PS3 to my sister's TV through HDMI, it worked. I connected my computer to my TV through HDMI, it worked. They just won't work together. And I'm forced to use a damn component cable.

Also, millions of people who can't afford a HDTV. They're quite expensive, especially in developing countries. Taxes make them very hard to afford because the price goes up a lot. So you might get a PS3 from ebay-like services or from friends/relatives who travel and can get you a PS3, but it's not as easy as that to buy a HDTV at an affordable price.

So when does the whining begin??

Also... the absence of the port has nothing to do with Sony trying to fk over customers(like the misleading titles states)

Its due to the AACS agreement

Some of the new Blu-ray players announced at CES are soon launching, and they include all sorts of new features (e.g., 3D, Skype, streaming) but have lost one not insignificant feature – component video outputs. This is dictated by the "Analog Sunset" clause in the specification of the AACS, the content protection standard used by the Blu-ray format, which forbids new players from outputting HD over component. By 2013, analog video output will disappear outright from all BD players.

For example, the technical specifications for the Panasonic BDT-110 conspicuously omit a component video output, which was listed (and present) on the previous BDT-100.

Paragraph 2.2.2.1 of the AACS Adopter Agreement stipulates that "with the exception of Existing Models, any Licensed Player manufactured after December 31, 2010 shall limit analog video outputs for Decrypted AACS Content to SD Interlace Modes only [composite video, s-video, 480i component video and 576i video]. Existing Models may be manufactured and sold by Adopter up until December 31, 2011."

Technically, a 2011 player could include component video outputs, but Blu-ray playback over component would be limited to 480i/576i, which largely defeats the purpose of having component video outputs.

In turn, paragraph 2.2.2.2 says: "No Licensed Player that passes Decrypted AACS Content to analog video outputs may be manufactured or sold by Adopter after December 31, 2013." In other words, Blu-ray playback over composite, S-video or component outputs will be disabled.

Most Blu-ray users have already migrated to HDMI connections so they are not affected by this development.

The PS3 won't work with my sony bravia

What an idiot. Of all TVs in the world, his PS3 doesn't work with a Sony TV via HDMI.

This is not true. A 22 inch 720p capable LCD TV having HDMI input costs around 8k in India, and 8k is VERY CHEAP for someone who is getting a 20k PS3 and plans to buy 2.5k games. And people who play PS3 games on a CRT TV need to stop, they dont deserve a PS3 anyway.

This move by Sony will obviously result in price drop, and when that is announced, these whiners will praise Sony.

EDIT: Thanks Snake for posting that article.

That's very harsh to say bro. People who have paid to own a PS3 deserve it. It doesn't concern which output they use. And yes, I think people who still want to use or do not have any option other than the CRT TV would find a work around. Something like a convertor to aid them.

But this is good news as far as price drop expectations are concerned.

And 22inch LCD for 8k?

When did that happen? I bought a 20 inch monitor for 7.5k :suicide:

Yeah, Videocon LCD TV comes for 9k, and those new LLYOD or something similar comes at around 8.5k. These can be easily reduced to 8k by bargain.

When I got my Bravia LCD for 16k, there were few more TVs for 10k, Samsung had 2 models, one was for 11 k and other for 13k. LG also had one near 10k.

So yeah, people buying PS3 can easily afford that. And if not, a cheap LCD monitor with HDMI IN will also work.

I'll add you to the list of babies Juno should have aborted.

What a douchebag !

Dont worry, ambar_hitman is always a douchebag... :bash:

HDMI have f**king HDCP and f**king creating problems with devices if HDCP is corrupted. My new FULL HD monitor worked good with HDMi and suddenly its not giving any signal. But xbox360 hdmi and my dvd player hdmi is working good on my monitor.

Then took my ps3 to my tv and hooked hdmi and it worked good with my tv.

So

HDMI cable = good

HD Monitor = good

Ps3 = good

But fukers dont work when connected.

So its surely not a good idea to only have hdmi port...tell them to try it on Ps4 and next gen consoles.

P.S : Go to google and type " PS3 HDMI not working" , you get fuking thousands of people with problem. some are idiots who dont try video resetting. but other problems are difficult
