Ne0
Killzone 2: Logic optional So it sounds like Killzone 2 is living up to the hype. As I don’t own a PS3, I can’t comment directly on what the demo is like. It sounds like it’s a really fun game, and something I would plan on getting if I did own a PS3. But lost amongst the media fellatio for this game is, in my opinion, a pretty glaring oversight and plot hole that no one has mentioned. But first, let’s take a step back to the first game in the series. You see in the first Killzone, the Helghast were invading a human controlled planet. As Wikipedia says: "In the game, the Helghast are a faction of human descendants who colonized the planet Helghan many generations ago. The planet's harsh environment forced the Helghast to adapt and mutate so much that they can no longer be considered human. They are stronger, faster and more resilient than their human cousins, and possess a burning hatred for humanity. Except for a small number of half-breed Helghast and trained troopers, they require a gas mask and air processing tank that creates air similar to that found on the planet Helghan." And that’s where the evil looking masks with the glowing orange eyes came from. Although nothing explains why someone would go to war with his face glowing like a road flare… So far so good. Guerilla was able to create an iconic villain for their new franchise, and provide a plausible explanation for their unique look. Killzone 2, however, takes place on the Helghast home planet. So now that they aren’t dealing with a pesky human-friendly atmosphere, you would expect them to look a little different, right? You kiddin me? Yes while on their home planet Helghan, they are still wearing “a gas mask and air processing tank that creates air similar to that found on the planet Helghan.” Why would they need a mask that recreates the air that already surrounds them? The present day equivalent of such redundancy would be this: "If only I had glowing eyes." And while I’m at it, how come the humans didn’t come a little prepared when invading the Helghast homeworld? Again, Wikipedia says: “A barren, unforgiving world, Helghan provides a ready defense with thick, acidic air, dust clouds, and violent surgical lightning storms.” Yet the humans arrive without wearing any kind of breathing protection. "I love the smell of thick, acidic air in the morning!" Even the Chinese wear surgical face masks in their polluted cities, and they only have to worry about lung cancer, not mutating into another species. Yes I understand Killzone 2 is a shooter, and it’s just supposed to be fun. But, it's clear that Guerilla Games tried very hard to make this game feel as epic and grandiose as possible. I’m sure they aren’t thinking “It’s just a game.” These are the same guys that released a trailer in which slow-mo gameplay was set to freaking opera music. And I know people will say that every game requires a certain suspension of disbelief. But a little consistency in a fictional universe shouldn’t be too much to ask. If Batman started using guns in The Dark Knight, you can bet people would have had a problem with that. Again though, I’m not saying the game is bad, or that it isn’t fun. I am just surprised that no effort was made to provide a logical explanation for these plot holes, or that no reviewer has noticed them either. I’m all for having fun and blasting enemies, but is it too much to ask that games just make sense at a basic level?

TAG
Amusing to see how the devs overlooked this small aspect I have an explanation You see, in these times of recession, the ISA just couldn't afford to make gas masks for its soldiers. In any case, they thought they'll be "in and out within a week" As far as the Helghast wearing the mask on their home planet, there is an explanation in the back story. The Helghast wear it as a symbol of Helghan superiority, not exactly for breathing purposes.
abhi90
maybe after KZ1 helghans adjusted to earth's air and they need mask to protect from helghan atmosphere... or maybe we are helghast and humans are wearing the helghans mask
Snake
The Helghast mask was original designed for lower class Helghast workers to survive the outdoor environment on Helghan itself and was a symbol of poverty. However, when Visari took control of the planet, he elevated the mask's status as a symbol of cultural heritage and it became a badge of honor. It's worn as a symbolic icon as much as it is for practical purposes. Visari edit:Commenting abt a games supposed "plot hole" without even playing the either of the games or reading a bit of the backstory is F'KING FAIL!!!! As for why the ISA dont need the breathing apparatus, guess no one paid attention to the trailer..."In and out within a month they said"....the ISA thought it would be a easy-peasy mission...they were so wrong!!! hammerhead
Helghast wear the mask to hide their ugly faces and their eyes glow red because it makes them look 'cool'.

Dude honestly even a month is supposed to be a tough condition there and HELL they are going on a war not for a vacation so they have to be prepared... In and out in a Month sounds cool but going without prepration is a bigger fail.
Snake
Yeah, its a EPIC fail on the ISA's part...maybe they didnt know what to expect..hence were not prepared!!!
