Guerilla "Investigating Co-Op" For KZ2 Downloadable Content

Killzone 2 releases next week, and we know all of you are excited. However, perhaps the lone primary drawback is the fact that it doesn't offer co-op gameplay.

There have been plenty of rumors floating across the Internet recently, and some are claiming that such a mode is in the works. Guerilla hasn't officially confirmed anything but thanks to a recent interview with European site Next Gamer, the possibility of co-op isn't out of the question. Said Senior Producer Angie Smets:

"We're investigating [co-op] now for downloadable content. We're looking at what would be the nicest possible things for downloadable content. We've already started on maps... we're not allowed to talk about anything else unfortunately!"

Well Angie, don't look now, but I think you just did talk about it. We can wait on the details, but the mere fact that a Guerilla representative mentioned that they're "looking into" co-op in the near future is enough. We don't always need every last multiplayer option available for every major release, but when it comes to FPSs, the more multiplayer modes available, the better. Let's hope co-op DLC is coming soon!

A very interesting analysis and comparison of graphics (only graphics not the entire game) between Killzone 2 and Gears of War 2.

Killzone 2 Vs Gears of War 2

Can guys who've played both the games verify this analysis? But whatever you do please don't turn this into another fanboy war

Hmmm.....Guy knows 'some' stuff....But i have my own take on the same topic.....

I understand that rendering vegetation as 'real-life-good looking' takes a lot of processing power.....But how can he suggest that GG took an easier route.?Obviously he hasen't considered the following aspects of the kz2 engine:

1. The engine runs at a 'steady' 30 fps which i would say is no mean feat for a game with scope & textures like kz2 (If you consider the fact that ps3 usually gets lesser amount of VRAM as compared to X360 [which uses shared memory architecture])

2. PS3 unfortunately doesn't have a default AA implementation option. In case you want to apply AA; you need to push significantly more. GG simply used 2 SPUs of the cell as 'dedicated' AA renderers (You would know this if you have been following GG's GDC tech demos and talks). And if i am not wrong; AA on kz2 looks amazing for a console game (Crysis fans, this isn't for you )

3. I have always said since early 2007 (before the e3 07 real gameplay demo) that it's not THAT difficult to do KZ2 as per the e3-2k5 target demo on PS3, if something like gears can be done magnificently on X360 (gears in 2006 was a BIG tech achievement for epic). I won't rule out the possibility of a better looking game on X360 in coming time (alan wake???) but it will take some better thinking on part of developers than just dumping .net code. Remember that X360 has a triple core CPU, with each core clocked @ 3.2 Ghz. You can do TONS with that power.

BTW, Does anyone remember claims from Capcom that Nero's special arm affects could be produced only on CELL and PS3 (this was before DMC4 went multi-plat) ???. Such claims are useless and should be dismissed whole heartedly.

4. Personally i feel that kz2 aces over any other game presently in the market because of the lighting aspects. It's one thing i have admired even more than the other aspects of the engine.

5. The Helghan setting (even before GG might have started working on the engine) hardly allows for any vegetation. It's a deserted planet. It's akin to saying that since Halo 3 does not let you fight against terrorism; hence COD4 is better. Heck, it's a design decision. To each dev his own!

6. I won't be surprised if EPIC gives a shot to gears on PS3 sometime in future (just an assumption) and comes up trumps. After all, they did do UT3 on PS3 and the game looked sweet.....

Thanks for making the long read...... :spank: (if you actually read all the s*it written above)...

over to you guys.....

gr8 reply dullu..

i am too lazy to do such a lenghty reply.

but i think the author has yped up the vegetation thingy by too much means....

i mean it may take this much of power but not THAT much of power...hope you get my point.....

farcry 2 has tons of more vegetation than Geow2 ....does it look better because of it..NO i say....

I wont go in details about everything as it'll make a hell lot of things [Lol trust me when I say I really know this quite deeply :naughty: ]

I'll just say two things:

1) GeOW 2 lacks shadows [the only actual shadow is the character shadows & they too are casted in a direction wherever the game wishes..not against the light source]

2) It lacks lighting in real time for objects [the lighting is only for characters],I mean check the source of light in a scene & then check the object.

The object wont be dynamically lightened up due to the light.

In KZ2 due to deferred render there are tons of amounts of local lights & every light has the ability to cast shadows as well even muzzle flashes [KZ2 is the only game where I have seen shadows due to muzzle flashes]

--------------------------------------

Anyways what I am REALLY stunned to see is that GG managed to sort off the three BIGGEST drawbacks devs have when using a Deferred Render Engine.

1) AA [Deferred has teh biggest conflict with enabling AA on the game]

2) Transperancy

3) Texture resolution. [Deferred render means much much higher memory usage than normal forward rendered game & hence the texture resolution takes a big hit...but they managed to sort it out & make the textures look godly]

"In anticipation of the Killzone 2 release, SCEA will also be launching a new television ad campaign this week in collaboration with Killzone 2 developer Guerrilla Games, Los Angeles based Zoic Studios and ad agency Deutsch LA. Coined the “Bullet” commercial, the new ad was rendered entirely in-engine via the incredible power of the Killzone 2 engine and PS3 technology to preserve the unique visual and epic gameplay experience.

"Every single frame of this commercial was directly rendered on a PS3 without the need for additional tweaking or touching up. We're very proud that our game engine technology has reached the point where we don't have to resort to software pre-rendering,” said Hermen Hulst, Managing Director. “In that regard it is a testament to our commitment to deliver on what we promise. What you see is what you get.”

SCEA will also be releasing a playable version of the ad, where users can control the camera view to explore the behind-the-scenes techniques used to create the ad. This version will also include a director’s commentary explaining the team’s efforts to develop a campaign that was true to the actual gaming experience"
