its wierd if square wave causes ps3 mobos to heat up..why doesnt the same happen to PC's ?

My inverted is square wave, and previously i was using my PC on the inverter for 1-2 hours daily and my computer always restarted during gaming.

Now i use only my UPS for 20 mins, and i bought a new set of ram also, and thats why it doesnt restart now so dont take chances

UPS : APC 650VA Back-UPS

PSU : Cooler Master Extreme Power 600W

Inverter : A luminious one (1400VA) i think

i thought u using something with active PFC..seems to be more of an inverter problem.

btw the APC 650VA Black is Sine Wave ? aint the sine wave series SUA ?

yep it was due to the inverter, my point was about square wave not damaging motherboards

my UPS is 'Stepped approximation to a sinewave '

hey chaoster.

a 650 VA ups is no where near enough to power your system when you are gaming.

650 VA is not 650 watts of output !!!

Your power supply is rated at 600 watts. Even if your power supply operates at 80 % efficiency it will still present a load of over 500 watts on your ups while you are gaming.

the 650 va ups is simply not enough bro !!!

Only reason you have not been getting overload alarms from your ups is your graphics card is not that power hungry.

my system has a 9800gx2 and it sucks soo much power its not funny . have a antec 850 watt supply and am running 2 APC BackUP-RS 1500 's.

1 for just my cpu only !!1 It has over 650 watts of current draw when gaming !!! and the other apc is for my 24 inch monitor and PS3.

Also the Active power factor correction is far far superior to the normal apc 500 and 650 va models.

Not to mention the power chute application that will tell you on your PC exactly how much power you are drawing and also will let you configure the UPS for maximum power factor correction.

the APC Back-up RS 1500 goes for about 12 K and it is SOOO worth it !!!

hope this helps.

I allways have my ps3 connected to my UPS. No way i can leave it unsafe with power cuts so frequent. Also one more care which i allways take is never upgrade my ps3 directly. I download the upgrade to my pc and then use a USB to update my ps3. I would say this is a very safe way considering the frequency of power cuts.

I had a problem with UPS's, I've used a Microtek UPS. When the power goes off, the ps3 switches off for 2-3 seconds and turns back on again when the UPS starts. If the ps3 switches off anyway, whats the point of keeping the UPS because my aim was to prevent any bricking problems when the ps3 is getting updated, or a game being installed etc. I dont need a long backup, i just want that the ps3 does not switch off and I have just enough time to safely shut down my ps3.

The UPS is working perfectly fine, i've connectd it to my computer and tested it. Probably, the ps3 is a bit too fast for the ups. In other words, the time delay between mains power getting cut and backup starting is long?

Any help?..or give me a model that overcomes the above

I also have 800va Microtek UPS it works fine with my PS3 and 360.

i use z5500 and LG 24" monitor along with ite consoles.....all is fine !

i think Ur UPS is overloaded////that may be a case...try only loading it with PS3 then switching off the supply!

500 VA Microtek UPS.

I just connected my ps3. I dont think that overloading is an issue. I'm thinking its a lag problem. Like i mentioned in my earlier post. It switches off and then comes back on when the UPS turns on. The UPS takes roughly a second turn on, but my ps3 probably wants it to be faster than that i guess :ranting:..

Is it some issue related to capacitive and resistive loads? The ps3 is surely a capacitive load right?

In a electronic circuit and Integrated circuits, even a nanosecond of zero power, can cause your circuit to switch off completely. So there can be no delay between the main power switch off and backup supply switch on. In power backup device electronic device, there is a mechanical-electrical relay which switches from mains to battery of the UPS at the time of power cut. It takes few millisecond for such action. So what supplies power in that time duration? There are capacitors which hold charge to supply power. So these capacitors have limited capacity. You seem to be facing the problem of overload and the capacitors are getting discharged even before the relay switches to battery. Try reducing the load of the UPS or get it checked by some technician.

Anyways PS3 is made complex circuits involving resistors, capacitors, inductors, mosfets and more devices. It is very difficult to classify as capacitive load.

Hey folks. Got myself a spanking new 40GB PS3 yesterday. Connected it to my SD TV for now with the composite and will get a new LCD monitor soon for the HD experience. :D

Now I'm worried how the console handles power cut situations. Do you think I should connect it to my UPS? Or is it safe to just leave it as it is?

Yeah you definetly should. I have mine hooked up to a basic computer UPS (around 2000 bucks). Very useful if your area suffers from power cuts or fluctuations.

The ps3 hard drive could get corrupted if theres a sudden power cut when its in use so better to be safe than sorry.

i have had many power cuts while downloading demos(mostly more than 1 GB). it is so annoying that the demo goes corrupt n u hv to dld the whole thing again..

so, if u can, u shud surely connect ur ps3 to a ups.

you should get a UPS ASAP. if your hard drive gets corrupted... its good bye PS3..
