Hardware:

SSD Hard Drive with option to put in normal hard drives as well, better ventilation and cooling mechanism.

Ultimate backwards compatibility(PS4 should support PS3, PS2, PS1, as well as PSP games, if possible).

Abundance of USB ports including more than one USB 3 port

Software:

Ability to install full games onto hard drives, like the 360(Actually my 360 runs quieter than my PS3 Slim due to this feature. It really helps in reducing the strain on DVD/BD drives, which recent games like Uncharted 3 are known to screw up due to their intense demands from the hardware).

All current multimedia plugins pre-installed, and new ones installed via updates when necessary(current consoles can't play many popular video formats).

External Hard Drive format not limited to FAT32 like this gen.

Legal Linux support!

Sony Working On "New Console" with AMD Graphics, Says Report

According to a report from Forbes, Sony is working on a new video game console that it has yet to name. And while the potential existence of a PlayStation 4 — should Sony choose to call it that — is not really surprising, a reported graphics hardware switcheroo might be.

Forbes writes that Sony may be tapping AMD to provide the graphics chip for its next game console, according to "former AMD employees." AMD and Sony offered no comment on the report.

The PlayStation 3 relies on Nvidia-made hardware to handle its graphics processing. Microsoft's Xbox 360 features an AMD-made GPU, having switched from an Nvidia NV2A in the original Xbox.

While the choice of GPU hardware in Sony's next-generation console may not have a material impact on end users and the performance of a PS4, it could be a roadblock in backwards compatibility support.

Report: Next Xbox Codenamed 'Durango

The next-generation Xbox may be codenamed "Durango."

Crytek senior technical designer Sean Tracy wrote the following message on Twitter: "Enjoying the Durango developers summit in London. So far, great swag and interesting talks." Tracy deleted the tweet soon after it went live.

Keep in mind that Durango likely wouldn't be the final name of the project, similar to the Wii U's Project Cafe codename.

Previously, the successor to the Xbox 360 has been largely referred to as Xbox 720, though that codename has never officially been sanctioned by Microsoft. Rumors last year also suggested that the system was codenamed "Loop."

Bethesda job ad points to DirectX 11 in Xbox 720 or PS4

Game studio Bethesda has posted a new job listing for a next-generation console programmer, which gives us insight into what Bethesda’s insights are for the Xbox 720 and potentially the PS4. There are some surprisingly specific details about what the position will entail. The job is titled “Future Generation Console Programmer,” something we expect will be changed before any business cards are printed.

Nevertheless, the teasing title does not mention any specifics but says applicants should have “extensive experience programming and optimising for the Xbox 360 and PS3.” From a developer perspective, hopefully that means that coding for the next-gen systems are accessible to those who have made titles on the current platforms. We know that moving from PS2 to PS3, for example, was a huge struggle and developers essentially had to learn the process from scratch.

The job listing also points out that it needs someone with DirectX 11 experience, which all but confirms that either the PS4 or Xbox 720 will be able to run the high-end DirectX standard. It’s that kind of stuff that cannot simply be changed with a firmware update, so this is no doubt a sign that hardware enhancements will be significant. Aside from that, we don’t know much about what to expect, though the rumor mill will continue to churn.

Hmmm...so as i read somewhere almost 2 years back; nVidia is fast losing ground to AMD over console gfx chipsets......I don't think M$ would fore-go AMD since it has worked well for the xbox 360...and now Sony....

As for DX11 news; cmmon :P by the time these consoles are out and running; we would already have DX12 on PC :harhar: And i hope that does not lead to Crysis 2 : DX-11 edition for consoles

Rumour - PlayStation 4 will abandon Cell processor

Next-gen processors to be provided by AMD, speculates report

According to a new rumour, Sony will abandon its self-produced Cell processor, opting to consider other options to power a PlayStation 4.

According to Kotaku, citing industry sources, Sony's next games console won't have a Cell processor or any possible successor to the CPU that powers the PS3.

The site reports that AMD will be providing the machine's GPU (graphics card), and speculates that the same firm could get the job of providing the CPU as well - possibly both on a unified unit similar to its existing Fusion architecture.

Rumour: Next Xbox won’t include disc drive, out 2013

The next Xbox will be rid of CDs, instead opting to have no disc drive in it at all, a report from MCV this morning is claiming.

The trade site has been told the information by a source under the “the strictest NDA” it has ever signed. It does say that it will offer “compatibility with some sort of interchangeable solid-state card storage”.

It isn’t confirmed if this’ll come as standard or a format similar to SD.

MCV’s also reporting a 2013 launch as we’ve predicted. On its announcement timing, it added it could still be announced at E3 in June, although that is “less clear” now.

On the actual story itself, Microsoft has refused to comment on it, but added in a statement:

“Xbox 360 has found new ways to extend its lifecycle like introducing the world to controller-free experiences with Kinect and re-inventing the console with a new dashboard and new entertainment content partnerships. We are always thinking about what is next for our platform and how to continue to defy the lifecycle convention.”
