Queries about Soft-modding my xbox 360

I've purchased a shiny new xbox 360 core system with a memory unit a couple of months ago.Now I wish to have my console modded. The retailer who has sold me the console has stated that he can soft-mod my console(which involves updating the firmware) for around Rs2800.However,he has also mentioned that despite soft-modding,all bootlegged copies of the games may not work properly(or may not work at all)on my console.According to him, this is a risk that I'll have to take if i decide to have my console modded. :cry5:

I'm not being able to decide what I'm supposed to do under these circumstances. Is it true that I may not be able to play certain pirated games even on a modded console?IF yes, then why is it so?Certain titles(original ones I mean) like the Darkness,Halo 3 etc require that a console should be updated to the latest version of the original firmware before someone can actually play these games. If i install the firmware update from the game disc or from Xbox live, then will I still be able to play pirated games? And for that matter,is M$ gonna brick my console,in case I connect it to Xbox Live?I'll be very grateful if someone kindly answers all my queries,as I'm almost a nOOb!

You will be able to play all pirated games provided they are from the same region as your console. However, there are risks involved:

1) There is a good chance that you will get banned from Xbox live.

2) You will lose your warranty (if you have any) and with the high failure rate of 360's that is a pretty big risk.

Thanks a lot for replying.I wish to have my console modded primarily to be able to play certain games which are still not officially available in India, like,Assasin's creed,Virtua fighter 5 etc. However, its likely that some of these games may not be region free afterall.Does it necessarily mean that if i manage to obtain a pirated copy of say,Virtua fighter 5,which is from a different region, then I won't be able to play it on my console? In other words, will I be able to run only PAL games or will my console be compatible with both types of games(that is PAL and NTSC)?

Also,as I've mentioned in my earlier post, there are certain original titles which simply don't work unless the firmware is updated. So will I have to update my console's hacked firwire,in case I try playing any such game? After updating the firmware, will I still be able to play pirated games(as the hacked firmware is likely to be overwritten by a newer version)?

1. Your PAL console will not be able to play any ntsc games(unless they are region free) but it shouldn't be to much of an issue getting hold of pirated PAL copies of these games.

2. I don't quite know what your talking about. You will be able to play any game without any issues. The updates that your talking about only ban you from Xbox live. Since I am not a 100% sure about this just wait for someone else to clarify this.

3. As far as i know the only two things you should be worried about are XBL and Warranty.

@burnaby, believe me, you REALLY need that warranty!

If it's procuring Out of Region games you're concerned about then there's always online stores like play-asia, game.co.uk and others. You can always ask members of the forum if you're unable to find a certain game. The Trading Post is also a great place to look for games.

hmm-trading post sounds like a neat idea.I've been looking for certain games like GRAW2,A.Creed,Guitar hero 3 and virtua fighter 5 etc for a considerable time...I'll definitely check out the trading post and see if anyone's willing to sell their copies to me real cheap(as i haven't got deep pockets lol).I'm also willing to exchange/trade some of my games for newer ones with the members of this community. However, one thing which worries me is that if i purchase a NTSC game disc(original),say of Assasin's creed, then will I be able to play it on my PAL console?

PAL/NTSC and Region-free are two different things. Some games might be out of region but can still be played on your console if they are region free. Many games are region free however some are not (especially EA games). But you can always be sure that a PAL version game will play on a PAL console and the same goes for NSTC games and consoles.

For a list of games that are RF check this post.

This is getting really rather baffling for me lol. However, the bottomline is that the NTSC copy of a game will work on a PAL console and vice versa, provided it is region free or is from the same region as the console. That explains why many people have apparently been successful in running NTSC copies of Assasin's creed on their PAL consoles. Why doesn't Ubisoft release the Xbox 360 versions of their games in India?Ironically, the PC versions as well as the PS3 versions of all their games are already available here.

a wise man once said (heck i'm old enough to call myself wise :)): you can either 'save' time or money, both never both together...

modding your 360 will require a fair amount of research to keep yourself updated with the latest firmware revisions and will also require you to find-and-download the correct-and-tested iso backups (read pirated games), so that you can minimize the risk of getting banned from XBL

on the flipside retail games cost money, and not all publishers have tieups with local game distributors, so you will need to figure out a way to order some titles from abroad (check out our IMPORTS section for more details)

yup, i'd say only get your console modded if the cost of games is an issue and u want every game that hits the market.....if ur worry is availibility, u can get games from play-asia with zero shipping or from the trading post.....getting original games is not an issue regardless of the region of your console

peace

As a matter of fact,I want to lay my greedy hands on almost every game that hits the market(but unfortunately however,my finances are in a deplorable state). So I think that I'll have no choice other than modding my console in the near future.

@vinitwins:You're indeed the embodiment of wisdom(This AIN'T a joke). You seem to have immense knowledge of the intricacies of modding/piracy etc lol.I hail you!

^ if you have already made up your mind, then i guess you dont really care about RROD/3-yr warranty *and* multiplayer gaming/getting banned from XBL - lets hope your console stays alive long enough to satisfy your gaming greediness :wOOtjumpy:

I'm thinking of selling my newly purchased copy of Burnout:paradise for the xbox 360;Despite the fact that this game has earned a lot of critical acclaim,i find it intensely boring :wallbash:

I'm willing to exchange/trade it for Assassin's creed or virtua fighter 5.Is anyone interested?
