John Carmack, id Software‘s resident technical genius, has been talking about what would constitute his “wish list” of hardware features for the next generation of home consoles from Sony and Microsoft. “So one of the most important things I would say is a unified virtual 64-bit address space, across both the GPU and the CPU,” Carmack said. “Not a partition space, like the PS3. Also, a full 64-bit space with virtualization on the hardware units – that would be a large improvement.” “There aren’t any twitchy graphics features that I really want; we want lots of bandwidth, and lots of cores,” he continued. “There’s going to be a heterogeneous environment here, and it’s pretty obvious at this point that we will have some form of CPU cores and GPU cores. We were thinking that it might be like a pure play Intel Larabee or something along that line, which would be interesting, but it seems clear at this point that we will have a combination of general purpose cores and GPU-oriented cores, which are getting flexible enough that you can do most of the things that you would do on a CPU.” “But there are still plenty of things that are much better done with a traditional CPU core, debugger and development environment. I will be a little surprised if there’s any radical departure from that. piper Posted August 24, 2011 Report Share Posted August 24, 2011 PS3 should have a long life thanks to the Blu-Ray player (God bless Sony on that one). The recent price cuts mean that this Christmas, it'll make more sense for most people in US/Canada/EU (their strong markets) to purchase a PS3 even if all they want is a Blu-Ray player. We'll have a PS4/Xbox720 when both Sony and Microsoft decide that they need to move forward. So far it has seemed that exclusive games-wise they are matching each other step for step. Hardware capabilities are pretty similar, and Wii-U has also landed with the same capabilities. Meaning they hope to go the next 3 years or more on the existing consoles. They keep making minor/cosmetic changes to the consoles every year just as we hit the F5 button on our desktops In a nutshell, Mr. Carmack can rest assured next gen consoles will kick-a*s. It's one of the major selling points of PS3. there is no need of it also tbh....blu-ray is superb media.....much much superior to dvd...its scratch resitant is great.....too bad nintendo did not accept it....still hoping there new media is as good as blu-ray. @ this idea of next gen....i am still playing ps2 thee days and dont want to move from that only....
