Xbox 360 Blu-Ray Add-on Rumors Heat Up

According to translations of the latest edition of Official Xbox Magazine Italy, Microsoft may be developing an optional Blu-Ray drive for the Xbox 360.

This isn't the first time the company has been rumored to be tinkering with the optical drive technology. Chatter popped up on sites like PC World in 2008 when the HD-DVD Format was phased out. Even though the HD DVD format had the backing of major studios like Warner Bros and Universal it still failed to gain traction next to Sony's Blu-Ray.

Would an Blu-Ray add-on make sense for Microsoft's console, nearly six years after launch? Common sense would say no, if it were being used for games. We're already so deep in this generations life cycle that producing games on Blu Ray disc and making use of an external peripheral would simply split the user base. Having it as an option for movies only? That could work if Microsoft can keep the cost of the drive below $99. Anything higher and consumers who might purchase the drive could just as easily pick up a used Playstation 3.

What are your thoughts on Blu-Ray possibly coming to the Xbox 360? Is it too late for Microsoft to embrace mass storage optical media? Should they simply wait for the next generation of consoles?

It was rumored in 2008, and its rumor now as well. Console is EOL and it will be foolish to give some add on which cannot even have any improvements in gaming as its an optional addon. For watching movies, anyone can get a separate BR player.
