SchizoidFreud
‘Gears Of War’ Artist Reveals Inspiration For Game’s ‘Fun’ Gore Ever wondered where Epic Games drew from when designing “Gears of War”’s over-the-top blood and guts? We have the answer: cult classic 80s horror films. At PAX 2008, MTV Multiplayer spoke with “Gears of War 2″ artist Pete Hayes, who explained that his favorite movie genre, horror, was the culprit. “That’s kind of the tone that I drew inspiration from and that’s kind of the tone that I wanted it to be in the game,” said Hayes. “Other games that are more slow and methodical and creepy and scary, I still enjoy playing them, but I really like the way that it is in ‘Gears’ and that it’s not serious. It’s more fun.” So, what are his favorite horror movies? Good thing you asked! “I’ve got a ton of them,” he said. “All of the original kind of ‘Day of the Dead’ zombie movies. Obviously, ‘Evil Dead.’ Huge fan. ‘Dead Alive’ was kind of comedy gore. The early Peter Jackson stuff like ‘Bad Taste’ and things along those lines. For me, my stuff is very old school and it’s when gore was fun and gore was just that kind of surprise effect.” Hayes admits he’s “not a fan of real-life gore” and movies that aim for grossing the viewer out with realistic violence. He pointed to “Hostel” (commonly referred to as “torture porn”) as a recent example. When it came time to develop the gore for “Gears of War,” he simply remembered what he liked in his favorite movies. “Honestly, I didn’t do much research at all,” he said. “It’s not like I was sitting there looking at dead bodies. There’s a lot of ‘mystery meat’ [in 'Gears of War''s gore]. It’s not anatomically correct. I just remembered all the zombie films [with] guts hanging out and cool things like that. And so I really focused on just visually making something look cool, but not just gore for gores sake.” In a video game, however, you’re not as limited by budget when designing the scale of your gore. Where did Hayes and the rest of Epic Games draw the line? When is there too much gore? How do you decide what’s too little? Hayes didn’t approach it like that. “It’s not like I was sitting there looking at dead bodies” “I think it’s definitely one of those things where if it feels right,” he said. “It’s totally about the gameplay and it’s totally about ‘does it fit into the game’?’ I mean, there’s not any slow, kind of creepy, premeditated, I’m-gonna-go-up-and-saw-your-head-off-for-five-minutes. It’s all just very action-packed, very quick, instantaneous. I don’t know that there’s really stuff that we felt out that we thought was too far. I think we got a good feel and a good vibe for what role the gore serves in the game and we didn’t want to play with that formula too much [in the sequel].” If you’re anxious for “Gears of War 2″ and can’t stand the wait, there’s always time to add some George A. Romero zombie classics to your Netflix queue.

ctrl_alt_del
Someone please copy paste this article...cant open it for some fked up reason Got it from the Google Cache It was more than a year after the release of Gears of War for the Xbox 360 that Microsoft finally came clean about a sequel for the 5-million-seller. But while the publisher may have been reluctant to go public with their decision, for Epic, it was a done deal on day one. "We started working on it the moment the first one shipped," Epic's Cliff Bleszinski told Kikizo during a recent demonstration of the new game, due on Xbox 360 this autumn. According to Bleszinski, the team watched as positive reviews started rolling in in late 2007 and knew what they had to do. "We have to do a sequel to this, it's going to be a success," he recalls telling the team. Always well prepared, Bleszinski makes sure during our brief viewing to hammer on the sequel's main selling points, which pretty much amount to this game being a louder version of Gears of War with more emphasis placed on the overarching story and a darker tone to hold it all together. Most striking is the game's new look and the grander scale. Gears was criticized for its gloomy visuals that seemed to be span the entire colour palette between dull and less-dull. Things will look livelier this time around. "A lot of people's memories of Gears 1 is essentially grey pillars," says Bleszinski, "and we really wanted to defy that in Gears 2 as far as having these beautiful vistas that are just a little bit richer in colour and are a little bit more beautiful." True to this sentiment, the design team was tasked with showing off the game world more in so-called "vista moments", to emphasize the "before" before players unleash hell on the carefully crafted levels. Considering the variation in the locations, it's fair to assume players will be seeing quite a few of these. Already the creators are promising missions that will take Marcus Fenix and crew from the highest mountains to the deepest underground caverns of Sera. For the 100-strong development team, Gears 2 is all about adding "flourishes" to what is already a polished engine (notwithstanding Too Human creator Denis Dyack's criticisms of Unreal Engine 3.0). If there was a weak point in Gears of War, few would argue that it was the game's story framework. From the non-battle with the Brumak to the unsatisfying conclusion, the game became the monstrous success it was in spite of rather than because of the underlying narrative. For the sequel, Epic is hoping a broader approach will work better.

Somebody
Even Gears Of War 2's Marketing Is Bigger, More Badass The Gears 2 development team have a motto: bigger, better, more badass. It's inscribed, in blood, atop their monitors, and every morning, they gather in a circle, wearing dark hoods, and chant it in latin. But it doesn't just apply to the development of the game. Oh no, according to Epic artist Pete Hayes, it applies to the marketing as well. Witness Dude Huge and his toy Lancer. Or this comment from lead writer Josh Ortega: The first [Gears] was good and if we can find a way to do ten times better, than I'd be impressed. That sounds hard, but sure, why not? I say the original Gears was like the ten, but sure, let's go to eleven. Like Spinal Tap, right? Let's go to eleven. Cocky? We like to think they're just not taking the lead-in to this game as SERIOUSLY as some other developers do (though few developers get the luxury of working on a guaranteed million-seller).
