Sony has announced plans to release a mouse and keyboard set of gaming controllers for the PS3.

A mouse and keyboard controller for the PlayStation 3 will be making its way to store shelves on November 2, 2011. Licensed by Sony Computer Entertainment, HORI will be manufacturing the so-called Tactical Assault Commander 3 peripheral set, which sells for ¥9800, or US$127.

The Tactical Commander 3 consists of an optical right-handed mouse and a keypad for the left hand with WASD-style keys. The pad also includes an easy-access D-Pad comes attached with a palm rest.

Tracking resolution on the optical mouse is unclear, but it's doubtful that the mouse can match the capabilities of a true gaming mouse for the PC. However, the mouse will come equipped with a DPI/sensitivity toggle for more precise aiming.

Sony has not yet announced what games it plans to support with the peripherals at this time. It's curious to see if the company plans to offer mouse and keyboard support for first person shooters like Killzone 3 and Resistance 3, which would undoubtedly benefit from the precision offered by the peripherals.

This should be compared with XIM3.

Because it(Sony's Key/Mouse) will support games natively.

Microsoft should do it too.

f**k no. At least not native support.

Online MP should NEVER be decided by how much money you have spent.

Yeah but those are minor things like weapons, skins, faster leveling up etc. Advantages, maybe. But they arent really significant.

This is an entire controller. And not just any controller, the most precise controller for FPSs in video games. Imagine playing CoD with a mouse against people aiming with sticks.

(1) What's the point of introducing official Gear for console if it does not have native support?

(2) Yes, it has always been like that, like it or not! There is a reason why professional gamers spend good amount of money on high end controllers, mice/keyboards. This is the sole reason why companies like Razor, Logitech, Rocketfish, SteelSeries and many more are in business. Of course gaming gear helps but ultimately it all goes down to your skill level. I have seen people with controllers raping people with high end mice , using a standard Xbox controller (in Multiplayer).

(3) Have faith in your ability, it won't change anything significantly. If it does then buy a mouse and keyboard. Its still cheaper than upgrading a PC every 6 months!

(4) Money is the main reason why gaming business is alive. That's why Sony made PS3 or Microsoft even bothered to join this market. What's right or wrong is something different .. You are saying the same stuff that almost every Xbox user says when he pays for live (frankly bitches for $60 a year) but then again.. everyone who plays online pays that fee.. right or wrong... right? Right.

(5) Lastly, people use XIM3 anyway.. so it will give other users (who don't have it), at least a chance to compete with them.

COD on consoles uses an aimbot so basically you get about the same advantage even with sticks. As long as you can aim somewhere close to the enemy, the gun will start following the target. There are always ways to counter the high accuracy issue against the mouse users.

Take the example of Killzone 3 with Motion Controls, the developers decided to create separate playlists for just the motion control users, to balance the game out. Similarly they can always enable a better aimbot for controller users when they are playing up against mouse users. So , like I said there are many solutions to approach this issue, as long as they are creative.
