My Cause, My Voice

Something strange happened with me today. A rickshawalla signalled me to stop my car at the side as I was driving to work. I did. He came to me and started crying. He said that he badly needs some money as he has to take a medical test. If he does not go for the same, and if the operation is not done on time, he might die. I asked him to go to Govt. Hospital and he said, that is where he is getting treated but he will still need to pay for the tests from private lab or something.

He looked really sad, helpless and weak. I don't ever give money to beggers as I believe it encourages begging but I don't know why I just gave this Rickshawalla a 100/- note. He said, the tests will cost him 150/- but he thanked me for the money. I gave him 100/- more. He thanked, blessed me and left.

Frankly, those 200/- would not make so much of a difference in my life. But I got thinking,

1. There is a possibility that he duped me.

2. Why did he only signalled me to stop and asked for money?

3. Do we really have able Doctors and medical facility in the Public Hospitals?

4. What should we do to help these cases? Any helpline? Any NGO- Any Doctors who do free counselling for the poor in Mumbai?

All the tests are done for free in the govt. set-up BUT the problem lies with the doctor. Many a times you will see them referring the patient to external labs as they get a commission out of this. Sad but true. So he might actually be in need of money.

Having said that, not everything they say is true.

3-4 years back, me & my mom were in a local shopping complex purchasing some items. A little kid, barely 6-7 years old came at us crying with a prescription and told us his mom's in urgent need to med and he needs money. I thought it would be better if we get him the meds instead of cash, and so we did. 15 mins after that we see that puny returning the meds to the pharmacy shop for cash. On confronting the shop owner, he told it's a regular affair and even he earns a profit from it (by returning only 50-60 % of the cost of the medicines). :|

Thanks Kaamwali Bai. I am aware that there are lot of people who use the disguise of helplessness to derive money. They are frauds.

There are 'n' number of NGO who are namesake and run for secret profit. But I also know that there are a lot who are really needy. I am also aware that there are some people who have genuinly given their life in the service of people who are not as lucky as most of us when it comes to education, health or future.

We must always use wise judgement and filter the frauds , but at the same time, I would hate it if I did not trust a genuine request because of my doubts or bias.

One of my friend said, what if he was a criminal and had given you some choloroform or kidnapped you.. Possible. But since, all that didn't happen I would like to believe that he used the money for his medical test.

And Obaid Bhai, Aapse mein Katti. <_< You only make fun of me and never help. And I am never gonna marry the guy you choose for me :ranting:

That 200 might not make a difference to you, but if he really lied to you, then that would make a huge difference to him. He'd probably be drinking with your money somewhere. #1 reason I dont give cash to beggars. If I really feel like helping, I take them to a nearby hotel / bakery and buy them a hearty meal. Money doesnt always find the right uses with such people. I once donated an old lady begging for money during a traffic jam, and I gave her a 50 rupee note (back when I was a student). She walked away to the footpath, and her husband who looked like a drunkard, took it from her. I was like WTF?!

Totally true. And for the record, I try to do the same. But what if you don't have the time ? WHAT IF the person really needs the money ? Is it justifiable denying one needy person so that you can avoid feeding the greedy ?

!(Women empowerment) & overpopulation are the ones I see more than once almost every week.

Particularly that first one.

The people that I *have to* deal with daily, in college, have got some really fantastic opinions when it comes to the other gender. Makes me think what they'll be like after 10 years from now, matched with some unlucky one. Also, this matching thing, where teen/<teen/adult girls are forced to marry some jerk just because they have to, sucks.

There was this women that used to work at my place.. she has 3 daughters. Like any other matchmaking fanatic, she married two of them at <18. Both girls were beaten, traumatized & sent back to home. One had minor injuries & the other one took 2-3 years to recover. I remember him talking with my mom when she was looking for a guy for the third one. She was scared. I felt horrible for not being able to do anything about it. :(

My respect!

I will surely send some info on this and my point of view too. I have met several such cases and have very closely seen and felt their problems and confusion. I try my bit to help them in this cause, though I cannot call myself an activist as yet. But I am delighted that you being a Man care for Women Empowerment.

That is not completely true. You have to pay nominal charges for tests such as 2D echo,USG,Xray more for CT and MRI scans.

3. Do we really have able Doctors and medical facility in the Public Hospitals?

4. What should we do to help these cases? Any helpline? Any NGO- Any Doctors who do free counselling for the poor in Mumbai?

3)*ahem*Some of the best doctors work in Government hospitals.

4)You can refer the patients to LTMG Hospital Sion,KEM Parel,JJ Hospital,Byculla or NMMC Hospital Vashi

true bro.

that is not all...there is one country famous for lumbering ....i think some finland ..iceland...joh bhi..i remember reading they have this policy that for every tree they cut they plant two of them....and in years it has seen amazing results there...with tree population doubled somewhat

Things like that can make a huge difference. We should really consider adopting those means.

South Delhi has something very similar, though I doubt the govt. involvement is that serious. Almost all the residential areas have a green belt around them.

With regards to greenery, Chandigarh is an awesome place. Fire up Google Earth and all you'll see over Chandigarh is a green cover.

Always nice to see a green place and whether its coincidental, I dont know, the weather is almost always pleasant in those places. The foliage possibly helps but even otherwise.

Wow guys, It's nice to see that you support environmental concerns.

My father used to take us to a nursery on our birthday and used to ensure that we buy 20-50 saplings and plant them in the Colony. Multiply that by 4, since this was a Birthday tradition for all of us in the family. Later, when I grew up I used to visit Orphanage, Rehab Shelters and provide food/clothes to the under-privilaged. My Dad however ensured that I gave part of my accumulate dpocket-money towards my cause, whatever that may be. Like my brother supported Stray Dogs and their vaccination etc. And I used to support a particular church that housed mentally retarded and abondened children.

Point being, even if we do something seemingly small, it gives us immense satisfaction. We spend thousands in our birthday parties, whereas some of these things may cost us just a few hundreds but make someon'e s day , week or month!

Thats a brilliant initiative. My school was very proactive in taking those steps and due to that did a fair bit when I was in school. While after school Ive always wanted to continue helping, I sadly never mustered up the courage to actually go and start something, until off-late, where my friends and I clean up the beaches every Sunday morning. My attendance has become sparse due to work concerns, but there are few others who still do it. I intend to make my niece, nephew and children to do what your father made you do. Its a great in the long-term.

Repped you Shekdown. It's amazing that you feel seriously about a particular cause and invest your time in it, whenever possible.

Many of us understand and feel for a concern but leave it for NGO's and some social workers to deal with it, as we are busy or have other things to do. Though it is not required to become a full time social worker, it is nice if we can take some steps however small at our levels to work towards any of the cause that we support.

In my Company I started an initiative which is "Pay from the Payroll". I gave the employees an option to voluntary donate the sum they feel comfortable which can be as low as Rs.50/- to the cause they support through this body called Give India (http://www.giveindia.org/). This sum is debited from their monthly salary and paid to Give India. I have around 48% of my employees donating in one cause or the other and this gives me immense joy.

It gives me pleasure that even the low runk office staff have given a piece of their pie towards this cause and it baffles me to know that some of the very highly paid ones, who talk about social issues and claim they do not have enough time, have not even given a penny for the same.

Point is, It just take that one step and willingness to help someone..and you will realise that you are helping yourself becoming a better human being.
