GTA 5 Map Is "Very Big" - Dan Houser

GTA 5's map size will likely wipe the floor with GTA 4's Liberty City if a recent comment from Rockstar's Dan Houser is anything to go by.

Asked whether GTA 5 was set in San Andreas by GI during a Max Payne 3 interview, the Rockstar co-founder said: "I've got to be real careful here, or they will drag me through the office and whip me with barbwire. I will stick to exactly what's in the press release. It's Los Santos and the surrounding countryside - and a very big map."

That's pretty much in line with what was said in Rockstar's press release - which arrived at the same time as the announcement trailer - but the first proper reference to the size of the map.

"Developed by series creator Rockstar North, Grand Theft Auto V heads to the city of Los Santos and surrounding hills, countryside and beaches in the largest and most ambitious game Rockstar has yet created," the company said back in November.

"A bold new direction in open-world freedom, storytelling, mission-based gameplay and online multiplayer, Grand Theft Auto V focuses on the pursuit of the almighty dollar in a re-imagined, present day Southern California."

I would prefer a smaller city with lot of interactivity than a huge city which gives you nothing to do other than staring at buildings and open spaces.

Its Rockstar, not Team Bondi or those Mafia devs (forgot their name). They haven't made a bad open world game since GTA 2 (which was good). GTA 3, Vice City, San Andreas, GTA 4, GTA stories games on PSP, GTA China Town wars, GTA EFLC, RDR, Bully, Midnight LA etc. There is no point in being apprehensive about a Rockstar Open world game. They can school all open world game devs out there.

When did I say they make bad games? They don't put much interactivity in the environment.

I give you some examples.

There is a skating ring in GTA4 but there is no way you skate there. There is a roller coaster which is defunct. There is an airport full of aeroplanes, none of which you can fly. There is a ball park actually there are many ballparks but you can't swing or pitch there, same thing for basketball courts and golf courses.

You get the point?

Actually the roller coaster was removed at the last moment for some unknown reason. In the initial ads it was supposed to work , you could take a ride in it and see most of LC at the peak points. Don't know what happened later. Aeroplanes , well you cannot fly them in IV , simply because there was only one city in it. where can you fly to ? I guess they kept it there just for the sake of completion....would look bad if a city modelled after NYC, did not have an airport :D

Talking about GTA 4: There is very good interactivity everywhere else. The way the police respond (prank call them, or fool them by attacking a civilian and get him arrested instead), the way the medics respond, the way the civilians take pics and call the police when you commit some crime, the way they speak to you according to your dressing/behaviour, everything is so lively in GTA 4 compared to almost every other open world game out there. I can go on and on about the things to do, even posted some stuff earlier, and found that half the people bashing GTA 4 didn't have any clue about them at all. The amount of interior houses/shops/other locations far exceed any open world city based game released at that time.

They need to add some more collectibles and easter eggs, and the environment interactivity as you mentioned, and make the environments varied like GTA SA, which they will.

You are totally correct. In fact I felt whole GTA 4 was an easter egg :P

Now you are confusing the NPC behavior with

interactivity.

People reacting to few fixed events or doing certain tasks is very basic thing you should expect in an open-world game, you may find it amusing when you see that first time but then they become a routine and you stop noticing them.

well, you will even get bored of the interactivity after some time right ? how many times would you have taken the roller coaster ride, even if R* did support it :P ?

Right after gta, I want bully 2

oh yeah. this is perhaps the most underrated game of R*. I loved the game to bits....played for hours and hours. I guess they don't want to stir another shitstorm, thats the reason they don't want bully 2. Also, the first one didn't exactly sell like GTA or RDR !

Yea, that is why you add 20 different activities and not just one. Add variations and XP system in each of them.

Well, play SR 3 for such stuff, I think GTA V will be more like RDR, tons of stuff to do, but dont expect xp and stuff like that. Last game that had something remotely like xp was GTA SA, and those features weren't liked too much by the fans. Most guys used some trainers to get past them.
