GTA 5: 2012 Release Date Unlikely, Launch Timing 'Doesn't Matter' - Analyst

GTA 5 launching before Christmas "is probably out of the realm of possibility" EEDAR's Jesse Divnich tells NowGamer.

Published on Aug 24, 2012

Grand Theft Auto 5 is unlikely to hit retail in time for Christmas 2012, despite Rockstar teasing the game heavily this week, according to EEDAR analyst Jesse Divnich.

"Rockstar has the best marketing and promotions team in the industry. They are very methodical on when they decide to release assets, and they most certainly do not follow the standard video game marketing script," he told NowGamer.

"I believe Rockstar is playing their cards very close to the chest, but they understand the need to continually tease consumers on GTA V's pending release."

GTA 5 has experienced it's heaviest promotion this week since the announcement trailer launched way back in November 2011. Gamers still shouldn't bank on a 2012 release though, Divnich added.

"A Christmas release is probably out of the realm of possibility at this point. Competitors have already placed their stake in the ground and while GTA V has no direct competitor, the combination of 2 to 4 great Action and Shooter titles this season could produce problems for a GTA holiday release."

Assassin's Creed 3, Halo 4, Black Ops 2, Hitman Absolution and Resident Evil 6 are among the titles launching October and November.

GTA 5's release date won't be dictated by a seemingly 'favourable' schedule either, Divnich reasoned.

"It's GTA V, release timing doesn’t matter. GTA IV launched in April of 2008, and prior to its release April was considered the "worst" month to launch a title."

Rockstar doesn't "view seasonality as a hurdle," added the analyst.

GTA 5 could be getting another three new screens later today if Rockstar sticks to its recent pattern of dropping assets.

"Why GTA shouldn't be GTA and be all the other games instead"

Seriously, I hate articles like that. Let Rockstar just do their thing. Whatever they do, they do with so much of precision and polish. And its been 4 years since GTA4 came out. Why do people feel the need to compare todays set of sandbox games with GTA4? When GTA4 released there was no game like that. Just look at how brilliant RDR was. (YES I KNOW IT WAS FROM R* SAN DIEGO NOT R* NORTH) I'm sure they'll make an experience worthy of this year, or next year. There's no need to shove all those mechanics of other games. down their throat. As the pioneer of open-world games, they know what its about.

What are you smokin ? GTA was always multiplatform ... even in the early days except Vice City Stories

God Of War III runs natively at 720p and not 1080p , if the PS3 can , then too does the XBOX , you're talking as if there has been a wide gap between the two. Both the PS3 and 360 exclusives become more polished (visually) as time passes as the devs get to know more about their architecture and there is no issues with Alan Wake running on the XBOX , dude please stop being a pile on !

Don't take me as a fanboy cause I don't have a console and I don't care about which console wins console wars and stuff ...

ok ok, so I was wrong. Don't get too worked up, dude.

I want my highways LONG that run through the countryside--suburbs-- dank a*s random places and little backwater towns YKWIM that you can travel to for one reason or no reason.

My beef with GTA4 was that the city had literally ZERO personality/charm/anything. San Andreas did it for me.

^^ GTA IV was just one city, SA was a state .... but I'm not sure if R* is planning to bring in the whole state this time around too .... my guess is it'll be mainly Los Santos and some neighboring small counties .... having 3 cities + all those counties like in SA, especially at the level of detail thats expected today would be very difficult .... but then again, its R* .... damn if they could make as big a game like SA on PS2, they can pull it off on PS3 as well I guess !

That picture of the oil well from the trailer shows the entire city. There has to be another full city in the game, no? But why name GTA "V" ??

Personally think numbered titles should be used for big leaps like a next generation game. They could have called it "GTA Los Santos". However, if they did an HD San Andreas or II, then I think that would deserve to be called GTA V.

Again could be Los Santos and the surrounding countryside. Sounds to me like they're recreating LA County, specifically.
