Air freight infor required - anyone had experience ?

Guys, I will be relocating outside of India (to Korea) in the coming week, as I've been offered a job there. The new employer has agreed to reimburse charges (quite a generous amount :D) for transporting some personal property. So I'm planning to take my gaming PC/x360/ps3 and all my games/movies etc with me. Now I wanted to know which service to take. I've not availed of air freight any time , so I'm not sure of the modalities. Also, I'm not sure if I'll have to pay custom duties in the target country. So if anyone had any experience in transporting some heavy items like PC/TV etc from India to abroad or vice versa, let me know if you recommend any particular company ?

I've only one option that I can think of - DHL, but I don't know how is their service. Any inputs on that front would be helpful as well :D

Well i think goin with DHl or fedex is wut i may call the most reliable option. But yet again the price is goin to be astronomic trust. Dunno if ur employer is just goin to bear all that. Another way is to make ur luggages travel via normal commercial flights. I believe u can arrange with the company to have someone pick it up for u or maybe let it awaits for u at the airport till u physically arrive there.

But if u want to have somplete safety and peace of mind, go with fedex ordhl.. these foreign couriers are just great at wut they do, specially these two.

Hope it helps :cheers:

Edit: to have an idea of how much it may cost you.. try goin to their site, they have a shipping estimation application there. You will have an idea of the cost before jumping into it

Why r u going with DHL. Its too expensive. Do u need it there that fast? Use any normal movers and packers who will ship it out by air at a lower cost/cbm. Of course if your employer will bear everything, but why unnecessarily waste money. If there are lots of cartons involved, you can go with a much more economical option of sea freight which would take probably 2 weeks to reach Korea. U can contact any international movers and packers.

O.o fedex is a private company ?? i though it is govt owned.. FBI and Federal Reserves wala Fed i though.. :scratchchin: or maybe it is USPS that is govt owned.

Anyway.. Why are you sending them seperately? Just take it as a checkin luggage and if you have excess luggage just charge that to your employer's account.. Have them prepare a seperate bill for your stuff and submit that..

And as a suggestion Companies do take notice if you save them money and what you are doing is very expensive.. Aramex is the cheapest and they charge 100$ for 10 LBS weights so imagine what will it be with DHL or Fedex. Will be even better for you in case you try to get them with no extra cost.

And as far as duties are concerned I dont think so any country wil charge duty or customs on used items. Though there may be a good chance that you might have to prove that..

Thanks for the suggestion guys.

@DS,

Do you have any references for international movers and packers ? I picked one such on random google search sometime back when shiting my house (within india though), and the results were very bad. Some of my items got damaged very bad. So I want to only go with references.

@bhpian,

Wouldn't extra baggage on flights more costlier ? I remember traveling in air france once , and they charged around 50 euros for every kg of extra baggage !

hmmmm.. well call up the airlines and ask them the costs.. weigh your luggage and see where you stand. in case you are working for a big corp then try using their reference to get the price lower.. you obviously have to check which is better. Though get it done in advance as far as possible. And BTW European Airlines are in a mess. they now charge you for carrying a 2nd Checkin bag even if the combined weight is lower than your quota..

and it also depends a lot on how you talk to the person at the checkin counter ;) my uncle using his looks and skills has brought 70kg excess luggage for free :P

and LAG you are not wrong.. i used to thing that Fed ex is a govt owned co.. i dont think so it is as US already has USPS.. should thank you that i didnt make a fool of myself in some future conversation :P

Contact some Korean importer. He'd tell you everything. Ask your new company to find that guy for you.

Also, congrats. :)
