Hope you can discern the difference between a dynamic moving object and a static changing background image.

Technically, both are the same. In both cases, only camera position is updated, nothing else. Yeah, in COD's case, they might have a static background instead of full 3d model of backdrop, but tbh it is useless. Only thing you are supposed to render full 3d is the actual environment, your object is supposed to move in, not the background skies and stuff. In UC's case, max. they would have done is take complete train as a object, instead of just you. All this will do is take some extra memory in UC's case (processing power required is same to move an object in 3d environment, no matter what's the size of object), which I don't think is a ground breaking achievement. I mean it takes hardly a couple mb ram to keep the 3d model of train to be rendered in realtime. agreed on the looping part though. Most devs cut corners to save time, not that it has much effect on performance anyhow.

See, I know what I am talking about.Just that I don't use technical jargons to prove my point, unless someone starts it. :P

The great thing about that train section was that both the train and the environment were affected by the physics. It affected your aiming, resistance and so many other things. Sure, many games have done such train levels before, but it wasn't the same.

You guys need to see this video. It explains it better.

dude, come on. that crysis train level was a semi on-rails shooter (lol) and nothing more.

On rails? Did you play it? Well technically yeah it was "on rails" because you were on a train but still... on rails?

It was pretty similar to UC2. You had to make your way to across the train while shooting down enemies on foot, vehicles and helicopters.

IIRC, nothing on that train moved except player. It just cannot be compared to train level in UC 2 at all. None of the objects like those sand sacks, mounted guns were movable.

There were moving enemies on the train. Mounted guns moved (as much as a mounted gun would move anyway) and the whole level did not have repeating backgrounds.

You guys have to realize that I'm not taking anything away from UC2. The train level in that was epic, it's just that ND aren't the only ones who do epic set pieces. That's their forte yes but then the UC games are always tightly scripted. It's actually more "on rails" than any other shooter that's not COD. Sometimes it's hard for me to tell if I'm playing or watching a cutscene. Can you imagine then pulling that off in a semi-sandbox game with multiple routes? Maybe TLOU will prove that they can.

i dont know man, the crysis train level had all but 5 bogeys with 2-3 mounted turrets where you could just stay put and keep on pumping bullets. compared to the train segment in uncharted 2 where there's platforming, shooting, couple of boss fights and heck there's even a scripted sequence thrown in there. all this while the bullets trajectory completely change as the train takes different bends.

Again, im not trying to downplay crysis or anything but that train level from UC 2 is unparalleled by all accounts.

here's the train level from Crysis :warhead

and from UC 2

i played that train level again a couple of weeks ago to chk out a few things and unlike other games where the moving scenery just loops over and over again till you reach a checkpoint, the train is actaully moving through an environment. i waited for around 5 mins at a single place to check for the scenery to loop and it didnt.

and a couple of guys were bitching about NT lead designer being one of the level designer on LoU. well guess what folks...... the train level in UC 2, arguably one of the most stunning set piece of this generation was designed by a guy who was the lead on Damnation, a game that scored 36 on metacrtitic.

Heh...

Even I did the same once, it took a while for game to repeat the surroundings, it did eventually, but after a long time.

TBF I didn't expect it to go to the areas which come after the checkpoint (had I progressed naturally), but what the game had was more than just 1 or 2 looping surroundings, as it would have been case with most of the games.

But with stuff like this, UC2 set itself apart from UC3, you don't feel corridored and hand-holding much.

Yes, like I said the train level was amazing. Clearly a lot of effort went into creating the whole sequence. Some comments on the previous page however suggested that ND are the only ones who can pull off a sequence on a "moving object". Yes they are probably the ones who do it best but there are other who have tried and pulled it off.
