But I bet it will have a cheesy ending, these two finding the cure for mankind, or after Joel becomes infected, he will sacrifice himself to save Elle, she might come back just in time with a syringe for cure from Dr Drake's laboratory. Not trying to agree with him here, but you really can't make a character likable enough to want to protect to *everyone*. Perhaps he's just one of the rest. That said, there's something scary about wanting people you dislike dead.. In his case it was "nah I'm cool and I wanna fight alone, this stupid bitch is just slowing me down". The point is that the whole game revolves around you trying to protect someone younger and relatively defenseless so they have a chance at a better world. Sure you can probably make that person sugary sweet but when the whole world is filled with murderous psychopaths even an annoying potty-mouthed kid would seem someone to fight for. Besides, there would be no room for someone to be "nice" and polite in a world that's lying in ruins. I think the characterization is spot on.
