Xbox 3D Virtual World necessary to compete with Playstation Home?

Recommended Posts

We reported earlier today about Sony Playstation Home that will launch some time in 2008. If Sony does everything right it will be huge for the Sony PS3. I actually think Microsoft cannot afford to not launch a similar 3D virtual world for the Xbox 360.

Microsoft's Xbox 360 is loosing more and more coolness points. It all started with not having HDMI on the first generation of Xbox 360 consoles. Because Microsoft chose not to integrate a high definition drive inside the Xbox they came out with an HD DVD drive, which is now worthless as HD DVD died last week.

So what is left besides Halo 3 and arcade games? A console that looks pretty old already compared to the Sony PS3. Sure you could argue that high definition movies can be delivered online and Blu-ray is not necessary for the Xbox 360. In my opinion downloading high definition video is still not feasible for many users due to bandwidth limits. Movie discs will stay with us for a very long time. You could also say that it is all about games and not about media when it comes to game consoles, just look at the Wii. That is correct in many ways, still if you can have all, state-of-the-art media and great games, it is the best of bread solution.

Playstation Home could just put Sony even further ahead, unless Microsoft keeps up and enhances their currently standard setting Xbox Network to offer 3D virtual world interface – it should not be that hard, it is like Halo 3 without weapons.

Last October there was already some rumor about Microsoft working on a 3D virtual world. Daniel Schiappa, general manager of strategy for Microsoft’s entertainment and devices division is supposedly leading the effort.

It will be interesting to watch what Microsoft will pull out of their hat this year to hold the Sony PS3 back from achieving a major success.

Wait a second! XBL needs a Home clone? What for?!!

Please give me quality titles to play and spare me the gimmicks.

I dont think there's any dearth of quality titles on the Xbox 360, both from the back catalog and in the coming year. If nothing else, the Xbox 360 is pretty short on gimmicks, so I wouldnt mind some extras.

Extras as in a HOME clone? No, I will pass.

Extras like the Xbox Originals service? Hell yeah! Now that's what we are talking about. Even if the rest of the world is not too excited about it, I think it's the best darn thing to come on XBL!

Now only if they could get something even better then this. Like maybe keyboard and mouse support for Halo:Wars. I wouldn't mind plonking in my money for MS keybds and mouse.

i think xbl is good the way it is....they dont need home...people go online to play ...maybe chat wid frnds and thts it.....

even if ps3 got a similar online as 360 it would have been good...ps3 home will be good fun for about 1-2 weeks then after tht its gonna be boring..i think ps3 home will face legal issues...considering people can share content , pics , video and everything wid anyone...this could turn into a arena for porn stuff...becuase u can keep ur wallpaper of your home from any pic stored in it..u can show videos and everything....so could turn into something illegal...

or maybe cheap people like in hi5 can find thier way here....

plus if i wanted a visual world ..i can go play sims..or register for stuf life second life and sh*t....i hope microsoft keeps it the way it is...

no, not really. ms just needs to keep hold of the exclusives it has and more, and thats about. persoanlly xbox original was a waste of time.

sony feels ps3 needs someting more social based, so it has home, but still, its about the games. even if they have ps2 classics, still........................... its all about the games.

Until home comes and ppl exp it, none of us can say if we want it or don't !

Maybe it'll be a novelty, maybe it'll end up as an addictive sim game in itself - all depends on how its designed. 'There were ppl who said online feature is not needed for consoles as we have pcs for them' ! Now, thats an integral part of all the current gen consoles!

So I would say, if something like 'home' is being given for free to me, I certainly wouldn't mind at all :nerves: If MS puts a price tag on it - No thanks !

That really depends to be seen on the quality of home itself. In some occassions it can be useful, other times it really looks only like a novelty. The only thing worth coming out on the PS3 is LBP.

I'm hoping that more than fighting the PS3, M$ focuses its absolute best resources in repairing the disaster the RRoD has made on it's reputation - and the best way to do that is to clean up there act, focus on customer support and actually DEAL with the problems that do crop up as opposed to saying "We cant do anything"

I agree with Cody on the Xbox Originals front. M$ actually took a leaf out of Sony's book there and have implemented it very well IMO. I'm thoroughly enjoying BLACK and am definitely buying Psychonauts as soon as I can complete BLACK and free up space on my HDD (a BIG downside on the Xbox 360) Now if only Sony would accelerate its plans to release PS2 games via download on the PSN store, life will be fine and dandy.
