They are comparing Western RPGs only...If we included Japanese RPG devs , these guys dont stand a chance  ....

Its might have been true 5 years ago, the truth is jrpgs have been in decline since ps2 era..for me snes was the golden era for jrpgs with games like FF IV and VI, the secret of mana, chrono Trigger.

But by todays standards most jrpgs havent evolved as much as their western counterparts (FFXIII case in point)

For me games like deus ex and fallout are progression in the rpg genre with switching their perspectives, their gameplay, their storylines, non-linear progression, character creation, high replayability, and so much more to fit todays expectations. JRPGs are about set characters with a linear story, which is progressed through by very specific means. the Persona series, Trails in the Sky, make this work there are just too many games falling flat because of their specific and archaic mechanics.

jrpgs are not dead, but they sure arent moving ahead. Until jap devs find a way to appeal to a wider more sophisticated audience, jrpgs will remain a niche style within a niche genre that will simply exist thanks to a few hardcore fans.

You do realise that the niche game you are talking about are far, faaaar better than 'press A to run'

Thats the exact same reason why JRPGs are falling back in the race, trying to please westerners instead of sticking to their quirky roots (case in point FFXIII). And all they end up doing is boring gameplay with bad voice acting. The best JRPGs are on portable, not consoles for the same reason, they don't have to worry about us on DS/PSP, heck half of them are not even localized unless westerners constantly beg for it.

They definitely have the skill .... they just dont know which direction to take the game to get both Sales + acclaim from fans/critics ..... hence why portables are their new home the former doesnt really matter when the dev cost is barely anything (and as a bonus you also get a wider audience in japan)
