One of the co-chairs of WG-12 is Microsoft, which played a major role in developing those capabilities for HD DVD (the other co-chair is Panasonic). DVD 2.0 Format Specification 1. Video encoded in MPEG2 SD 2. HD available via Super Upconversion to 960p 3. HDi interactivity 4. Networking 5. Managed Copy 6. Fully backward compatible with existing DVD players. They are just trying to take some of the technolgy developed for HDDVD and put it DVD2 so that it doesn't go waste. Dont see anything wrong in that. They are just offering an option to current DVD owners. While a large part will shift to Blu, a similarly equal majority will stay with DVD. For them, this will be an added incentive. As far as being a hindrance in the advance of technology is concerned, we are the same people who complain about having to upgrade every year. So why not a choice? A: Currently 99:1 Last year, DVD sold $22 billion worth, while Blu-Ray sold $180 million worth with all the free give-aways(paid for by Sony but scanned as sales) and BOGOs. Points to note: DVD2 is fully compatible with all existing DVD players. Xbox 360 or DVD2 player(both of which are wayy cheaper than standalone BluRay players or the PS3) would support additional features like Upconversion and HDi. Blu-Ray players will play DVD2 discs as normal DVDs no extra features. Two things you can't ignore- The DVD install base and the Xbox 360 install base. The DVD owner doesn't feel screwed and buys DVD2s as usual. He can upgrade to a DVD2 player when he's ready and his library is still relevant and looks and sounds a whole lot better. It is still DVD 2> Capacity remains same 9gb Max. 3> It is a spec enhancement to accomodate new features and (may be)have better upscalling. Customers who spent $22 billion on DVD didn't care. anyway, correct me if I'm wrong - HD is what, 1080p? DVDII can handle 960p. You'll hardly notice the difference of 120pixels from a distance. arun360 Posted March 13, 2008 Report Share Posted March 13, 2008 well no1 cares now because HD isnt the standard right now and HD isnt just about video, its about audio as well...and 9GB is just not enough to accomodate high quality audio and video and maybe you got fooled by the fancy terminology.....super upconversion is nothing but upscaling....so let me spell it out for you one more time....its not HD Agreed. It's not true true HD but it's definitely a big stepup from DVD. Customers are fine with taking baby steps when adopting new technology. Anyways, this is just vaporware as of now but here's a thought on how the next war will draw out. Operation ScruBlu: 1. Stop production of DVDs. Manufacture only DVDIIs from now on. 2. Simultaneously introduce standalone DVD2 players at a competitive pricepoint with BOGO offers and allow the Chinese to make them too. 3.
