The Elder Scrolls Online

^^MMORPG games die only if developer/publisher fail to provide weekly/monthly content.Content is what matters, nothing else.

Happened to Defiance/SWTOR/The Secret World. Played all and they are really boring at times. No proper updates, no new content, nothing. Just minor changes and in-game micro sh*t.

WoW - Always had some sweet content, excellent support, community, expansion packs. So they charged $14.99 for years and still going on. People are moving away from WoW due to lack of content now.

If ESO does what TES series did and provides what WoW did for years (expansions, weekly/monthly content, servers, support), people will instantly buy and pay subscription fee.

Umm, which F2P MMO doesn't charge for everything and also good at same time?

Dark Orbit

Dunno if it's still around though, used to play it years ago

Earlier today Bethesda revealed that The Elder Scrolls Online would be a subscription MMO. The reaction has been mixed, but Bethesda’s Matt Firor has been eager to justify the decision.

Now we also have a number on the current beta sign ups: over three million and counting. It’s a huge number. To put it in perspective, Guild Wars 2 has just sold three million copies as it approaches its first year, and The Elder Scrolls Online isn’t even out yet.

Matt Firor hit us with the numbers today at Gamescom. “We’ve had well over 3 million beta sign-ups, which we haven’t announced before.” said Firor. “You don’t want to let too many people in early, because the game is, frankly, not too good in early beta and you don’t want to expose many people to that, but we’re well into the tens of thousands.”

I’ve watched the reactions come flooding in, and it’s been a mixed bunch. Is free-to-play the only future for new MMOs? World of Warcraft, EVE Online and Final Fantasy XI would certainly like a word if that’s the case. Even the upcoming WildStar and Final Fantasy XIV still believe in it. It’s not that free-to-play doesn’t work, but it’s an incredibly delicate business model that more often than not is executed poorly. A nice middle ground of pay-once has proven successful if Guild Wars 2 is anything to go by.

One does have to think however that many of these people would've signed up without prior knowledge of the recent announced subscription model. But Bethesda certainly have a lot of attention right now, and that’s a start.

Lets hope they change their mind and make it B2P.

I hope you're WRONG. :ranting:

It might die on consoles -> no doubt.

It'll be huge and massive hit on PC with/without subs -> no doubt.

I'll get it on day 1, play it, if its really worth it, I'll pay the subscription fee or else skip.

(SWTOR failed not because of subscription fee, but because of broken game and everything. + EA =\ )

If you think subscription will make this game fail, then you're wrong.

FFXIV just sold 200K+ copies within a week (despite version 1 failing big time) and doing well (except server issues, typical SE) with subscription fee.

Yesterday’s maintenance didn’t just increase the number of servers, but it also enhanced the servers themselves, by pushing the limit of simultaneous connections for each to a very respectable number between 7,500 and 7,800. This means that now the game can theoretically play host to up to 413,000 players at the same time.

Quality matters.

The Elder Scrolls Online Preview

- We explore the multiplayer and MMO elements of TESO, with an interview with PvP designer Brian Wheeler

Hands on:

Elder Scrolls Online, as you can probably guess from its name, takes the play mechanic from Skyrim and puts it into the Elder Scrolls universe on the internet for some collaborative dragon-slaying.

You can spend several hours just creating your character. From picking the warring race, whether to go warrior or mage, to the size of his or her earlobes – the permutations are infinite and ensure that your avatar will be unique.

With character created we were thrust straight into the Elder Scroll Online realm to fend for ourselves. We landed in a wintery and stark landscape very reminiscent of Skyrim. It looked good and we're sure the extra polish that will be applied before the game's official release next year will make it look even better.

The open world nature of the Elder Scrolls games means that we initially wondered what to do and where to go until we saw the familiar way-markers in the compass. The clean HUD and lack of overt signage means that finding your next task could be tricky.

Bethesda has managed to subtly provide indicators via the compass (that also lets you know if the objective is above or below) and by using in-game mechanisms. Advice from townsfolk, spotting an evil skeleton archer or simply following other players all lead you to where you need to, often literally, bury your hatchet.

There are plenty of NPCs with more-or-less interesting stories to tell. Voice characterisations are solid which helps provide a more immersive environment.

We played the beta version in third-person mode which worked well, but was a little odd after spending so many hours playing Skyrim in first person. Bethesda has listened to user feedback and will be providing first person mode view in Elder Scrolls Online, so there will be sighs of relief from all the archers out there.

Combat clearly still needs a bit of work. The combat system in Elder Scrolls has always been a little clunky, but has been more than made up for by the huge and beautiful game world. We found distinct moments of unresponsive controls when attempting to attack or defent while playing Elder Scrolls Online, but we're sure these are just beta-bugs.

Picking up and equipping items can be done in-game rather than having to break up the action while a new lock-picking mechanic will ensure plenty of teeth grinding once more.

First Impressions

It's hard to gauge how the Elder Scrolls world will translate to an MMO but the game mechanic is certainly solid. It's a traditionally solitary game though and there are many that may prefer it that way.

The £8.99 monthly price tag on any platform (PC, PS4, Xbox One and Mac) will put off a few but that's nothing a free month's trial can't solve.

We'll be updating our Elder Scrolls Online hands-on with more news and gameplay insights.

User review:

Hello fello ESO Fans and today I can finally say I played eso and god damn it was good, im gonna try to make this as in depth as possible for you guys, so lets start!

Lets start of with the graphics, I have no idea what anybody had to complain about they were beautiful and IN MY OPINION kicked Skyrim's arse. The game-play was smooth and fluent and once you get a hang on the skill point system its very easy to use the UI is very basic and feels like a TES game, you had the quest you were doing at the top right and text bottom left which faded after a while, and to communicate with someone btw you go near them hold f and there are multiple options such as add to group add friend or whisper and to chat you press enter type what you want and press enter again to send.

While actually playing the game i found my self in a space of 20 minutes doing 3 side quests and btw i was well forced to be in the ebonheart pact and i chose to be an argonian the first time and the second time an dark elf, you had a lot of adventuring you could do and a tone of side quest just that small space we played in could keep you going for hours.

Now lets talk about the views we had we started off in 3rd person and the more you scroll the closer you get to 1st till eventually you're in 1st person there both smooth and good but at the end i found my self opting for 3rd person as when battling against archers its good to see the red area where the arrows will go.

When battling a red glow, glows around the enemy while watching you think will be annoying but in reality its very helpful and would recommend it strongly.

With all these positives there are negative such as if you narrowly miss an enemy they dont notice your attack its like you didnt just miss an arrow an inch of there head, also while swimming you can literally jump 3 feet in the air while swimming if you wanted.

so overall i enjoyed it incredibly i played it twice waited 20 minutes each time (right at the start and right at the end) the people at the booths were incredibly helpful answered any questions you had as best as possible and as we played the last batch of people we were given an extra 15 minutes which was a bonus. So like i said a brilliant game, needs some polishing but otherwise an incredible game.
