Hope they use the RED Engine to power this game as well. That engine is severely underrated in this age of CRYTEK and FROSTBITE.

While I have the personal opinion that it is equal to them and uses Dx 9.0c to boot.

I have not played Witcher 2 yet as I gpu will not able to handle the game. If they can make it like Unreal engine it will be adopted more often. The game should be scalable like games developed by Unreal engine. Although I don't like the art style of most of the unreal game as looks one grey and brown in color. And should bring DX11 for sure

That trailer doesn't even show any thing ..they are bad at making trailers but I am sure game would be great....

This is reveal trailer, they just revealed the name of the game

Which graphics card do you have?

I do not see many studios adopting Dx 11. Most games have a Dx 9.0c option thanks to hardware fragmentation and consoles.

Same thoughts here. I like how unreal engine games works like a charm on lot of GPU's and they perform high also on even decent gpu but when it comes to art and the colour palette..its pretty disappointing ....

having said that anyone any idea what engine new god of war ascension is using...its colour palette is simply awesome.

Not all unreal engine games are grey/brown... :threatenlumber:

There is no grey/brown stuff in Mirrors Edge

Mass effect uses modified unreal engine..

Both Borderlands games are powered by U.E

Batman games uses U.E

Bioshock games are powered by U.E

Most of Tom Clancy games are powered by U.E..

New XCom uses U.E

U.E is the most versatile engine ever and it works like a charm even on low/ medium range PCs.....Red engine is good but you need a kick a*s hardware to enjoy Red engine powered games....

Not played Xcom but played all the rest of games you have mentioned above and all of them felt something very common in their visual presentation...and they all felt the vision of their world were limited by Unreal engine. In other words , i am trying to say Unreal Engine does not make anything feel fresh just makes it look good in that limited space....

Except Borderlands and Mirror's Edge, all games mentioned above have similar feel to it. I have pointed this out many many times on different forums, and most people not blinded by EPIC fanboyism agreed. UE engine is great, but unless devs put extra effort on it, it can make the games looks similar.

^^ You missed DISHONORED.

But pretty much what I wanted to put across, has been put through by above posts.

And more engines means more variety, I hope that CD PROJECKT RED continues building on the RED Engine and license it. I mean it will be a pretty useless exercise to develop an engine for 4 years to dump it in favour of the ageing Unreal. Ultimate irony will be if BIOWARE licenses the engine for its title(s).

Why does it take so many years to develop one engine?? i wonder ...coz if that is the case it makes not much sense to take so much time to develop one engine make one game from that engine or max 2 game and by the time you done ...Next gen is already here and new engine is needed to tap the potential of it...

Engine development isn't always that long really depends whether you are gonna make one up from scratch like assessing basic underlying code for all of rendering ,sound, memory management ,network, physics ,collision detection ....goes on...and some of these can take months or years depending on expertise especially rendering engine cause it really depends on the type of game you are developing if you want it to be just suitable for one type of genre like in red engine case they have made it with RPG games in mind ,that takes extra work but also make the later parts easier .

On other hand you can always use middle ware like havok for physics ,bink for video etc with your own 3d engine which will save a lot of time... but red engine was developed from scratch with very few middle ware used

....but sometimes developers are looking to just get expertise so as the future engines would be easier to build up and that's understandable pluss it looks good on resume if you have worked on an engine....lol

Lots of reasons to develop and invest so many years in an engine --

  • You design the engine from the ground up so you know its internal code and its strengths / weaknesses.
  • Your studio is small and you cannot license another engine, also learning the engine (licensed) is a time-consuming process and you need specialists from that field.
  • Time depends on what you are doing, is it middle-ware heavy, no, integrates all features in itself OR no. Unreal is really flexible here but unsurprisingly this is its Achilles heel as well because certain base features are so stunted to allow middle-ware to take up the slack.
  • Developing the engine with certain parameters in mind -- The first Witcher game was built on a modified BIOWARE Aurora engine (remember NeverWinter Nights 2) and it showed its age and limited graphical fidelity for that time. This time around the artiste(s) knew what was on their mind and they put forth their vision, hence the RED Engine.
  • Also your final point that the engine will get redundant after 2 -->3 titles is wrong, biggest e.g. -- Unreal Engine by EPIC. It is in revision 3.5 and the most popular licensed engine in all studios is version 3.0 which has powered a bevy of games from ~2007 -->2012 (present). Also the engine has been the main reason that EPIC stays afloat, licensing. And once you have proven technology in hand you attract talent and can sell
licenses to interested parties and later develop a franchise from that engine -- Unreal 1.0 --> Unreal 2.0 --> Unreal 3.0 / 3.5.

Other examples I can muster up as of now are --> iD Tech (Doom Engine), Relic Entertainments Essence Engine (used in CoH and DoW II franchise), DICE's FROSTBITE and CRYTEK.

Hope this explains the point, Cheerio!
