Capcom overworks Ono, drives several employees to the brink of suicide

Yoshinori Ono is another developer who decided to speak up about working conditions within the electronic entertainment software industry...specifically, working conditions at Capcom. In a lengthy interview with Eurogamer the producer tells writer Simon Parkin to use the headline "Capcom overworks Ono" because he says the company would sack him if he tried speaking up on the issues.

Just so readers have an idea of what this is all about, Yoshinori Ono is the famous producer who rose through the ranks of Capcom and eventually nursed Street Fighter back into the mainstream spotlight with Street Fighter 4. According to Ono, Capcom wanted nothing to do with Street Fighter after Third Strike because they didn't see it as a mainstream seller anymore and Ono says he received a lot of inter-office political opposition getting the game done and out there.

Fast-forward a few rehashes and millions of dollars of revenue later and Ono is back on the fighting game train, this time with a little title called Street Fighter X Tekken. Now, most of you know about all the ugly news that came out of this site involving the disc-locked content, which eventually caused the game to under-perform on Capcom's estimated bottom line for the game.

One of the things we didn't cover during that time was the stress Yoshinori Ono had undergone promoting the game and trying to save face for Capcom. It resulted in him passing out and being hospitalized due to heart troubles. Ono says that once he got back to the office Capcom had already set out a schedule for him and prompted him to get right back to work. This cued the following response from Ono...

"Capcom doesn't allow a trade union or any sort of worker movement you see,"..."So if I complain I will probably get sacked. You have to say it for me, OK? I want you to write: 'Capcom overworks Ono'. That's your headline."

Game dev is no joke , this is the case in almost every company http://joestraitiff.livejournal.com/ http://www.ppl-pilot.com.nyud.net/mame.aspx . Only maybe independent studios are kinda safe from this kind of BS.

The reason ono is pissed is not just because Capcom is overworking him , its because even after all hes done the company refuses to change.

When Third Strike came out R&D didn’t really consider sales back then,” Ono explains. “We weren’t as marketing-orientated as we are today. We just wanted to make the best game and wanted to please our most hardcore fans. That’s what drove us. Obviously, in terms of sales it didn’t pay, so the company couldn’t invest in a sequel with a decent rationale.

Man this is what Capcom used to be and made several Genre defining games DMC,RE,SF2,Phoenix Wright,Megaman :( . Ever since they fired PG they are just like EA,Acti and only care about is $$$$ , they dont care about losing talent ( Keiji inafune , Shinji mikami ,Kamiya ) its coz people refuse to buy these games anyway.

Vanquish,Bayo didnt have great sales (and like 5 people on IVG know about anarchy reigns :P) whos gonna publish these games? Sega is doing the worst marketing possible, and other big guys arent gonna bother . Capcom knows that these devs need their marketing, budget,IP so they'll milk them for all their worth. As long as making sequels gives more money than making new IPs , Its more power to the suits and more milking of workers.

is this the time when we should stop appreciating JAPANESE culture of WORK?

SO much has change this decade...i still feels its not long ago that i use to come across news articles and other forms of business news where companies were trying to learn japanese work culture and trying to implement in their companies. It was like Japanese companies and their work culture were legendary stuff. Ab toh sala sab ulta hogaya re. :(

I had so much respect for capcom and almost all japanese companies. I use to buy pirated games at that time and trust me many times i bought games just because the front paper on that plastic cover had capcom written on it. My first game on ps1 was resident evil among few others....and after playing RE 1. Just capcom name was enough for me.

These days i cannot stand capcom.....

I think its because of todays economy nobody wants to take risks , not just gaming companies. And because of unemployment is so big , these companies are abusing existing employees coz they know they wont leave.

Japan has suffered economy crisis before also if i am correct yet they hold on to the policy of treating employees more than just employees.

I believe the problem is Japanese companies gave up on their believes and are now adopting more western style of business practices.
