NUCLEAR UNION

«…And now about the weather in Pobedograd. It is mainly sunny today, with winds coming out of the north-east at 10–20 mph. Daytime temperatures are expected to be about 70-74°F with 46–50°F at night. There’s a slight possibility of pseudo-snowfall if the wind changed direction. The Radiation level at the Garden Ring is 18-51 roentgens per hour. The thermal anomaly activity is within the normal range…»

The USSR vs. USA faceoff known as the Cuban Missile Crisis was resolved by force in 1962 as the entire planet became involved in a nuclear war. With half of the Earth’s population dead, almost the entire planet surface became unfit for living due to radioactive contamination. However the Soviet Union was ready for such an outcome. The military machine had mobilized and was operating at full throttle sometime prior to the world catastrophe. The country underwent a full evacuation of the citizens, industrial facilities and companies of the utmost importance to a pre-built network of specially equipped bunkers.

50 years later. 2012… The fragments of the socialist empire that were hastily brought underground have gradually become a real state with its own capital, a city called Pobedograd. The key goals of the Nuclear Union used to be, and still are, the survival of the population and the restoration of an industrial base against the background of the aggressive environment.

The powerful Soviet empire even survived the end of days. Survived and continued to develop in an absolutely new and vulnerable world. This unusual story of unusual people starts here, underground, in Pobedograd.

The protagonist of Nuclear Union is a Soviet officer pilot who participated in the nuclear bombing of the USA. This past of his is nothing compared to what he is about to live through in this new dangerous world, bathed in the rays of merciless radiation.

It is common knowledge that anyone who’s about to face danger should always be holding a weapon in their hands. Experts of firearms will love the range of weaponry to fight enemies included in Nuclear Union. The arsenal of those who survived the nuclear apocalypse, and the decimation of the military complex, led to the best Soviet fire arms that never went into mass production being preserved in the Nuclear Union as operational prototypes. For instance, a three-barreled submachine gun TKB-059, AO-46 (aka “Soviet UZI”) for 5.45 mm bullets, and the TKB-022PM bullpup assault rifle.

You have lots of questions now Comrade. Be patient. And note that Pobedograd will stand regardless. It will survive because of you.

article from rock paper shotgun

1C and Men Of War men Best Way are making a post-apocalyptic RPG called Nuclear Union. This is basically party-based STALKER/Metro in the Men Of War engine.

Uh huh.

It’s as if they sat down in a meeting and said “What would really make Jim Rossignol’s head explode on a Friday afternoon?” Well, they came pretty damned close. A bit more on this, including the first trailer, below.

This is the most troubling press release opening line I can remember:

“Every child knows the glorious story that lead to today. When the Capitalist Alliance lead by the Americans refused to allow our defensive screen in Cuba, in 1962, and then attacked us with nuclear weapons. However our Motherland and the Soviet Forces were better prepared than the dogs knew. We leveled them, and half the planet, to show our sickle is sharp and the hammer hits hard indeed!”

It’s fifty years after the Cuban Missile Crisis caused all out nuclear war, and now people are emerging from the bunkers of New Moscow to take back the world. Yes, it’s all looking a bit Fallout-meets-Metro-via-Stalker. But it’s being made by an RTS studio, with their RTS engine. And check out this bit of the FAQ: “Anomalous fields emerged on top of the Earth following the nuclear strikes, and animals and people who failed to hide out in the bunkers due to various reasons, mutated. Hence Nuclear Union will definitely feature anomalies and mutants!”

So yes: a party-based RPG using the Men Of War engine, with all the trappings of STALKER. Like so: “Nuclear Union features a third-person view camera. The player is unable to control the party members, but it is possible to do something about their behavior and to assign commands to them during the combat.”
But we do know there’s going to be a big old freely-roamable world: “The explorable world is constantly growing. The protagonist can move freely around any already-visited locations. The more the plot unfolds the more locations he will be able to visit. If we talk about the freedom in the game, it’s pretty large. There is a global goal, but it’s totally up to the player what steps they will take to achieve it. The freedom of the player’s actions will only be limited by their imagination.”

FAQ FROM FACEBOOK PAGE

Q: What are the main features of your game?

А: Nuclear Union is a 3rd person action/RPG in a post-apocalyptic setting. We have reconstructed what could have happened in the world if the Cuban Missile Crisis had erupted into a nuclear war. One of the main features and differences of Nuclear Union is that it shows how a state could have preserved and evolved after a nuclear catastrophe. In the majority of movies and games dedicated to this topic the post-apocalyptic world is shown as a wasteland inhabited by gangs that fight each other. We tried to introduce another point of view. In Nuclear Union the state itself, the USSR, has survived the nuclear war and has adjusted to the new conditions.

The player will not only see it in the surrounding but will also feel the leadership of the state and the party while playing the game.

Q: Will the game feature any heavy ordnance (tanks, choppers etc.) the protagonist will drive?

A: Yes, we do plan to have some vehicles in the game. Although these are likely to be non-drivable.

Q: A few words about the game world – will it look more like S.T.A.L.K.E.R. or Metro with its gas masks when you climb up onto the surface?

A: The world of Nuclear Union was made to be much more realistic than either of those. Farmers breed cattle and grow vegetables. Workers work in labor-shops. Monsters and animals roam around searching for food, and run away from tougher enemies and hide. Humans and the new world get along together pretty well, even with the radiation. Our key goal is to have the player submerge into this extraordinary world, and let them play an exciting adventure. It’s been a long time since the nuclear war, and people got used to world around them. Most of them carry gas masks only if required.

Q: How versatile is the game weaponry?

A: We are developing a deep system of barrel and gun customizations especially for our fans, which will provide for upgrades of weapons to suit ones’ requirements.

Q: Will the game feature cover system? If yes, will AI use it?

A: The AI will use environmental cover in order to defeat the player. Players will also be able to take cover for protection from attacking fire.

Q: How often will the player face other humans?

A: You will be fighting against humanoids for most of the game. The fights will be tough and require additional training. Human enemies will be early in the game, but further in the game there be more and more mutants.

Q: How are mutants represented in the game? Will they ‘live’ in locations and behave according to their own set of rules??

A: There will be a life simulation system for these creatures. You’ll be able to watch mutant behavior in their natural habitat to determine if they are a threat or not.

Q: Will the game feature trade and money? Can I sell everything I find?

A: Yes, there will be money and trading. You can sell almost anything if a trader has money and is willing to buy it from you.

Q: Will be the SDK released to general public?

A: Speaking from our previous experience with the Men of War engine GEM2, the SDK needs to be released because this extends the life cycle of the game. Our editor is known for its easy learning curve and simplicity of modifying resources. In GEM3, our new engine, we improved the editor further. Now it is more visual than textual editing, we also added a lot of features that make creation of materials, maps and missions clearer.

If only more developers understood this simple concept.

Pretty sure most developers understand that. But those working with big publishers also understand that extending the life cycle of a game is not a good thing for them. They have to release a new installment every year.

This used to be a cargo union station. Right now bandits headed by someone called Nagant reside here.

There’s a mini-market right nearby the entrance to the bandits lair, overseen by several machine-gun emplacements.

The protagonist will be able to trade here the stuff he looted in action for guns and ammunition.

Will we see any anomalies and monsters in the game?

Anomalous fields emerged on top of the Earth following the nuclear strikes, and animals and people who failed to hide out in the bunkers due to various reasons, mutated. Hence Nuclear Union will definitely feature anomalies and mutants!

The game plot can be considered a fantasy, because it unfolds in the alternative historical reality. Did it affect the game weaponry in any way?

Of course! Everything happened in a different way in the game, in the year of 1962. The industries were hastily moved to the underground bunkers along with key specialists of the Soviet Military Industry. As for the weaponry in 2012 there will be a large selection of “unusual” small arms, inclusive of experimental Soviet prototypes, which existed in the real history, but never went to the mass production.

Where exactly does Nuclear Union take place - under- or above the ground?

Most of the time gamers will play above the ground, in the Moscow region that survived the nuclear apocalypse. Moreover, the protagonist will also visit Pobedograd. As aforementioned we cannot share any more information with you.

Will it be possible to free-roam the game world? How big is it?

The explorable world is constantly growing. The protagonist can move freely around any already-visited locations. The more the plot unfolds the more locations he will be able to visit. If we talk about the freedom in the game, it’s pretty large. There is a global goal, but it’s totally up to the player what steps they will take to achieve it. The freedom of the player’s actions will only be limited by their imagination.

Role-playing games usually feature companions to the main protagonist, the so-called party. Will they be featured in Nuclear Union?

The protagonist will meet very interesting and colorful characters in Nuclear Union, and some of them will join him. It is possible to travel with only two party members at a time, but it is the player who decides who they will accompany them and when to abandon them.

Due to this, the weaponry in 2012 will be a large selection of “unusual” small arms, inclusive of experimental Soviet prototypes, which existed in the real history but never went to the mass production.

Do you plan to have a moral choice system throughout the game?

Some game quests might trigger some a moral choice that might affect the various plot lines. But the protagonist, an active Soviet officer, will definitely never join forces of evil.

Will it be possible to overlook the battlefield and give tactical commands between the party members, like in the Men of War games?

Nuclear Union features a third-person view camera. The player is unable to control the party members, but it is possible to do something about their behavior and to assign commands to them during the combat.

Will the combat in Nuclear Union will be real-time or turn-based?

All battles are real-time, but it will be possible to use active pause. For example, for more precise shooting or assigning commands to the party members.

Can you please share some details about the combat system?

We will give you more information on this later.

Some words about the role-playing upgrades and playing the role of the character?

Unfortunately we cannot comment on this now. Let’s come back to his topic later.

What about Steam support?

Yes, we plan to distribute the game as usual both through retail boxed versions and digitally through Steam.
