A New, $99 Console Called Ouya Is Real and Radically Different From Xbox, PlayStation and Wii

Leaks are springing, and word is out that a new mystery home video game console called Ouya is in development. This is a real thing. Ouya is a $99 box running on the Android platform, with a focus on free gaming, according to details spotted in a listing on a site for tech start-ups spotted by the tech reporters at The Verge. The most tantalizing detail that they report is that: "Even the underlying hardware is 'built to be hacked'—every customer who buys a retail box will get a dev kit in the bargain, the site claims."

The look of the console is being designed by Yves Béhar, who crafted the look of the One Laptop Per Child computer. The project is also backed by ex-IGN exec Julie Uhrman, former Xbox gaming honcho Ed Fries, and some other top tech folks.

Sources close to the project tell me there are even more surprises to what is an altogether out-of-left field new entrant into the home video game console wars.

We've got Xbox, PlayStation and Wii. Have we got room for something like Ouya in our living rooms?

I'll have more on this very unusual project in the coming days.

How the hell do you pronounce this thing.....????

What is the meaning of hardware-intensive, how does it matter?

Also, no vendor control = crappy apps.

We have moderately controlled market like itunes, we have free-market like Google play and we have closed markets like XBLA/PSN, all have their own share of crappy apps. Content-moderation is not very big problem, getting the quality content is. In the market of low visibility, devs will play safe, and quality of average games do not match that of on consoles and handhelds.

The distribution should be open to everyone, but premier publishing should be limited to quality stuff, a 2-tier system like XBLIG and XBLA, with more freedom given in terms of setting prices and self-rating.

from what i see they are showing you can play all android games on your TV with a controller

imagine playing a game like GTA3 or max payne

now you dont need to buy an expensive phone and connect through MHL HDMI cable etc.

for the price point, i think its pretty good....

For 100 bucks I would buy it even if all it does is emulation and video playback. Going by the hardware it oughta be able to do everything released before the PS2 very easily.
