Ouya dev console shipping on December 28

The Ouya game console already has the distinction of being one of the most highly-funded Kickstarter projects of all time, and it aims to become an innovative gaming machine that will change the way people think about gaming consoles. It’s still up in the air whether the latter is true, but we’ll find out starting next month, with Ouya dev consoles shipping on December 28.

The Ouya folks have posted an update on their Kickstarter page along with a photo of an actual prototype of the console in hand. They announced that developer consoles will ship on December 28. Additionally, the software development kit for the console will be made available to anyone on that date as well.

We’re not sure what the difference is between the developer consoles and the regular consoles, since Ouya ultimately said that “every Ouya will be a dev console.” The only difference we know of is from the update they posted today, calling the dev consoles, “pretty special.” However, they’re mostly just releasing early so developers can get a head start on doing what they do best.

The first batch of regular Ouya consoles are expected to ship sometime in March 2013 for users who purchased the console without developer credentials. The Jelly Bean-based console launched on Kickstarter over the summer and it raised over $8.5 million, thanks to its extremely-low $99 price point and overall hackability.

That's the size of the console? o_O And WTF are they doing in that pic....????

With that size, anything remotely high end will burn it and it will disappear in thin air :lol:/>

Gaming console my a*s. Rather buy a SNES or NES instead of this crap.

its a mid-end phone with no screen or battery. size seems good enough for it. or were you expecting a dedicated gpu for this sh*t? it is android based for a reason.

As harsh as it was i totally agree with that EG article , theres no effing way this thing can run madden12 or left for dead even at the lowest posible res and detail :lol:/> ,and that UI is a direct rip off from the 360 interface, even that window showing 'Last Played' game looks so ditto 360 :doh:/> Pretty much everything stated about this consoles feels so ellusive. And this console isnt even worth mentioning alongside current gen consoles forget about xbox720 or ps4. And the fact that this damn thing is open to hackers means that people are free to cheat in online games and no scrutiny whatsoever (thats if people develop online games for this). For once i agree with amber , if this thing tries run anything remotely current gen it'll vapourize :rofl:/>

Its funny how many loyalists they have gained just by branding this as a developer friendly ,indie friendly console.

Ofcourse most of these loyalists are bedroom/garage/basement programmers who have never touched a girl in their lives and theyll prolly just tinker around with anything they see.

as much as your post made sense in the first few lines, last two lines killed it. you should not make such kind of statements.

Bah...It's not designed to replace 360 or PS3. But it has enough power to run games like LIMBO, Castle crashers, Shadow complex...

If people don't port those games on Ouya, there are many thousands games available on Android and many of them can utilize a controller, they all can be on Ouya, with device being easily rootable. If you don't want to use Ouya for games, use it as a streaming player, make your TV 'smart', use to watch movies or play music, or like a basic computing device for surfing and stuff.

Device being open mean you can run apps like this....you should get the idea.

Just dont call it a console then. Use some different name. I knew it was going to use Tegra 3. And I know how hot does Tegra 3 get when we play demanding games for a long time. Not even very demanding, any proper 2D games also heats it up a lot. Hence I was expecting bigger size which had better cooling mechanics like a fan or something. Smaller size usually requires better cooling as heat dissipation area is small and it can heat up the device a lot.

Lol. So because the device doesn't look big, doesn't come with a fan and probably heats up a lot which you don't know for sure....it shouldn't be called a console. ok.

Unless they have put liquid nitrogen in there or they are not planning to run something more intensive than NES mario, that device is bound to heat up. Wait a minute, you said it can run Shadow Complex? Not happening at all.

Shadow complex...

Please....... have u seen or played shadow complex?

Not in this life time , or the next. The console became a laughing stock when they showed many high profile games on the menu like madden12 , left4dead2 , shadows of the damned etc during that demo and these are games that wouldnt run very smoothly even on a mid range notebook/netbook and u expect some device thats no bigger than an apple with smartphone specs to run these games with acceptable performance?? never  . Theres no need to remind people about this console being warant to hackers and open ended , the fact that its based on android itself makes it evident . And about it being 'developer friendly' , ever heard of steamworks?? If there are any potential/ambitious amateur developers out there im sure they'll prefer a medium like steam to market their games on an actual 'gaming' platform.

No doubt this console will sell well , $99 is a good price and many have already preordered. But it wont deliver. Ive been trying to dig into details about this console on google and everything about this thing seems 'dodgy' and uncertain .
