CNN: - "Video games help you get in the mood to do the killing"

Recommended Posts

By now most of you know of the tragic news and events that took place shortly after the clock struck midnight this past Thursday in a Denver suburb movie theater.

It was only a matter of time, however, until someone made the stupid comment and blamed the horrific events of Thursday on video games. :O:wallbash:

CNN's criminal profiler Pat Brown who said on Friday morning video games gets a person in the mood to kill.

"[He] probably spent a lot of time in his apartment, playing one video game after the other—shooting, shooting, shooting—building up his courage and building up the excitement of when it’s going to be real for him.

Lame comments are all too plenty. But coming from someone holding such a position, well, that is surprising. But having openly made a fool of himself, I wonder if his words will hold any credibility.

Also I guess they should be more concerned about the source of the weapons etc before dwelling into such ill founded comments.

Details are starting to emerge about James Holmes, the psychotic gunman who killed 12 people at a screening of the new Batman film on Thursday night.

Holmes, 24, was a PhD student who was described as 'really smart' but was in the process of dropping out of graduate school at the University of Colorado Denver.

He is said to have had few friends and barely any social life, instead spending hours indoors playing the video game Guitar Hero.

Police are currently baffled as to Holmes's motives for launching the deadly attack which injured 71 people as they watched blockbuster The Dark Knight Rises at a midnight showing in Aurora, a suburb of Denver.

However, one clue may come in a report that the killer, whose family comes from San Diego, had dyed his hair red and described himself as 'the Joker', implying that he was inspired by the popular Batman series itself.

Although Holmes described himself as 'easy-going', neighbours and classmates recalled an anti-social recluse who had little contact with others.

Guy's a Criminal Profiler. He knows this stuff better than majority of us.

If I don't get inspired to kill people after playing violent video games, it doesn't mean it works like this for every person out there. People, not just children, are impressionable. Some more than the others.

I'm not saying I believe this guy killed those people just because of video games. But it's a possibility.

Another thing that bothers me is when some research shows "Video games improve driving skills", people say something along the lines of "Video games FTW!" "Yay video games!". But when someone links video games to violence, they all get butthurt "THAT GUY SUXX" "VIDEO GAMES NO VIOLENCE LOL" "I NEVA KILLED ANYONE LOL".

You are driving, you are solving puzzles & you are hurting people. If the driving & puzzle solving skills are getting better, isn't there a little chance that you're getting more violent - even by 0.0001%?

Yes . Video games made him violent . Or Maybe the dark nature of the movie . It's all their fault . Blame everything except the actual guy and his disturbed psychological health .

How about not sensationaling this news for the sake of TRP and make feel every upcoming criminal that he can impact the normal life .

Video game definitely have an effect on people. I won't deny that its desensitized me to violence - especially that nature of gun-related violence.

Too much of anything...be it video games, alcohol, porn or even watching movies or anything we do in our daily lives ,is not good. When we get addicted to something even if it looks not harming at all...somewhere we grow a kinda of frustration in ourself, which is just waiting to come out.

also to add...

i honestly feel ...batman characters and atmosphere is too dark and real...in todays time it feels we feel even more closer to it... specially character like joker can have lot of influence on one's psych ...if allowed to...

all this led to him going crazy...unfortunate for those poor soul.....:(
