Rafael is a better rb.

How is buttner?

Surya Young>Nani. Young is damn fast, can shoot long range. Give nani or valencia more of a central role, Valencia is very good as cdm so if you have cdm posistion in your formation try valencia there.

I thought I play defensive and then I played rajprdp

Making love to the ball in your own half lol and even funnier sometimes I had the lead and sometimes it was nil nil!

I was getting so frustrated ! Many times I had to rush it and slide to get the ball from his half lol

Raj you play well, why the immense urge to keep the ball in your half

repped

awesome games bro .. that iniesta goal i scored is most prolly the best goal i scored in 13 till now. DAT final pass by Xavi

:arigato:

glad/rad/vanilla/any other players who use United:

Nani vs Young .. can you sum up pros and cons. did not use young even once till now. Nani doesn't contribute very much for me(I put him at LM in either a 442 diamond wide or in 4231 or in 4411)

i have hardly used young..but nani is awesome..his dribbling, skills, shooting and crossing is really good..rooney and nani are the reasons i some times play with united...

Introduction

I decided to write this guide because I see a lot of misunderstanding or misinformation going around about various formations, the fact they are "overpowered" or stronger than other formations, even amongst very knowledgeable community members. This is info I learned from some guys over in the manual controls tactical discussion forums, these guys are really heavily into their FIFA theorycrafting and in my experience they really do know a lot about this game.

I'm breaking this guide down into a few sections and I recommend giving it all a quick read because understanding the way formations work is really key to getting an edge in FIFA.

Section 1: What is the best formation?

There are really two possible answers to this question. The first is that technically as far as FIFA goes there really is no single "best formation". All formations have their uses and the main factor is knowing their strengths and weaknesses.

The other answer is simply whichever formation you feel most comfortable in. If you've played 500 games of FIFA in a single formation over the last year, you should probably stick with that formation and just use the information here to improve your play with that formation. Trying out other formations and getting a handle on them is also a good idea though, it will provide more variety to your play and let you take advantage of other players in some situations.

Section 2: How do formations work?

This is the part where things get a little complicated. Really the most simple way to consider formations on FIFA is like a big game of rock, paper, scissors.

The biggest example of this I can give is the 3-5-2. If you follow FIFA community stuff much you'll no doubt have seen the 3-5-2 and the 3-4-1-2 getting a lot of attention recently, with people all over the place calling these formations "overpowered" and "sweaty". Actually these formations are no better or worse than any other formation in the game. However in the current state of FIFA they do have one big advantage.

Contrary to what you might hear often, midfield play is actually huge in FIFA. Better players can overcome midfield disadvantages but in general when you are outnumbered in the midfield you will find yourself closed down quicker, and having less outlet passes available which can make you lose a lot of possession with the auto-defending methods.

3-5-2 and 3-4-1-2 are the "counter-formation" of the most commonly used formations, 4-4-2, 4-1-2-1-2 and 4-2-2-2. Essentially 3-5-2 is rock to 4-4-2's scissors.

3-5-2 Advantages

Why is this? There are a bunch of reasons. Defensively in FIFA there is a simple rule of thumb, have one more defender than your opponent has in attack. With this you'll always have a defensive advantage in numbers and if you make a mistake, you'll still be on equal terms when he manages to beat a player.

Therefore playing against any 2 at the front formation, a 3 man defence is absolutely fine if you control your defense properly.

Next onto the midfield, where the advantage lies. You have 5 midfielders to his 4. This means you can pass the ball around easier, often have open guys to pass to, and generally have a more comfortable time building up an attack. This is really amplified when someone does double-contain or makes a mistake because it opens huge gaps which your 5 midfielders will flood. Defensively it allows you to pressure with more freedom and close him down better while he tries to build up an attack, often getting possession back in the midfield and being able to counter quickly.

Lastly attack, well with the CAM/CF the attack is pretty much as strong as any formation, since the most attackers you can have in default formations is 3.

3-5-2 Weaknesses

Any 3 at the back formation has trouble with good wing play from the opponent. If they spread the pitch well with their wingers they will get a lot of space to create havoc with your defence.

3 at the back also requires reasonably well paced CB's. At least in FIFA 12 there is a common trend with most of the quick CB's, they are generally weaker and worse at heading than the slower ones. This means you can get truly terrorized by someone using their wingers properly and having a strong tall striker down the middle.

Also due to the "1 more defender" rule stated above, any 3 at the back can be exploited by a 3 at the front. As soon as you make a mistake they will have a potential 3 on 2 situation which decent players will often turn into a goal.

Section 3: Counter Formations

So which formations counter which? This is a pretty difficult thing to list since it's a bit more complicated than rock, paper, scissors.

The easiest way to describe it is to identify the advantages and disadvantages of each formation.

3-4-1-2/3-5-2

Advantages - Attacking formation, 3 at the back covers 2 at the front, free reign of midfield

Weaknesses - Defensively weak on the wings, needs quick CB's

3-4-2-1/3-4-3

Advantages - Attacking formation, 3 at the back covers 2 at the front, wing play

Weaknesses - Defensively weak on the wings, needs quick CB's

4-1-2-1-2/4-2-2-2/4-4-2

Advantages - Well balanced across the pitch

Weaknesses - Can get outnumbered in the midfield

4-3-2-1/4-3-3

Advantages - Balanced defense, attacking formation, wing play

Weaknesses - Outnumbered by most formations in midfield

4-3-1-2

Advantages - Balanced defense, attacking formation

Weaknesses - Outnumbered by most formations in midfield

4-5-1/4-2-3-1

Advantages - Balanced defense, free reign of midfield

Weaknesses - Lone striker

Lastly 5 at the back formations, again a cause for much abuse and sweat complainers. However really you should just envision a 5 at the back as a slightly more defensive version of it's 3 at the back counterpart. The wing backs will play up the park so wing play is it's main weakness.

Section 4: Using your formation

Now you know a bit more about how formations work there are a few things you can do. Take advantage of the strengths in your formation to put more pressure on your opponent. Try to cover up the weaknesses in your formation. Lastly if you think things are getting hairy, just change your formation to one that better counters your opponent.

I play mostly 3-5-2, so when I match up against someone in 4-4-2 or 4-1-2-1-2 I feel pretty confident. However if my opponent is playing 4-3-3 or 3-4-3 or similar I'm immediately thinking about how to best play against it.

The best way to do this is to try to always grab a midfielder to help out your back 3. Any of them will do, just track back with them when your opponent is on the attack and cover any gaps you can see. The only thing to be wary of here is not to take over someone elses position. I see this regularly where people run their midfielders back into their defensive line, which messes up the defensive AI and sends one of the CB's out into midfield which is obviously not what you want.

If the guy is clearly a good player and uses his wings well and I feel threatened, I might switch to a 4-1-2-1-2 to counter him. If he's really dominating me I'll go 4-2-3-1 to really slow him down.

I also build my team to cover up some of the formations weaknesses. Make sure at least one of my CDM's is reasonably tall, quick and strong and has a high defensive workrate. Try to use defenders who are pacy and tall/strong enough to cover all angles of attack (David Luiz, Sakho, Lucio, Pepe... NOT Sergio Ramos, Chiellini etc, they are too small/weak).

Final thoughts

So as you can see, all formations in FIFA are good, all of them can also be bad in some situations. You can cover up the weaknesses in a formation with good play but what you can't cover up is your ability to play to your formations strengths. Either you need to practice more or just switch formation if it doesn't suit you. Personally I have a habit of playing through the middle and so formations with wingers just don't work well for me.

Hope this has been useful, feel free to leave any comments/questions. Thanks for reading.

352 is so OP ..its more like 5 defenders with those 2 cdms..have to try that one out..those 3 defenders stay in their position unlike any 4 back where the full back always make forward runs and leave space behind..all u need is quick center backs..

tarun is using that formation really well on FUT.
