In a presentation at Ubuntu Developer Summit currently going on in Denmark, Drew Bliss from Valve said that Linux is becoming more viable platform as an alternative to Windows 8. Windows 8 ships with its own app store and it is moving away from an open platform model.

Highlights of the talk:

- Steam client is running nicely on Ubuntu and many developers have approached them with good game products.

- Cooperation with Canonical has been good.

- Ubuntu is preferred platform as it has a large user base and good community support with a strong company like Canonical behind it.

- Linux has everything they need: good OpenGL, pulseaudio, OpenAL and input support.

-New Source engine games will be available for Linux.

-No firm time frame for Steam Linux release, but soon.

-Copy protection is up to the game publishers.

Drew announced that anyone with a Launchpad account attending UDS will be given Steam access through a beta key.

i think the intent of this statement is to downplay windows 8 rather than push up linux. valve are visionaries when it comes to gaming but i just cannot agree here. linux is nowhere near being ready for mainstream gaming. that would require an entire industry to ditch dx and shift to opengl programming, and does anyone think microsoft will allow that to happen? as long as linux users are stuck with wine, it will never be a force to reckon with.

Valve is just jealous of Windows Store taking away the share of casual gamers from Steam ..

No matter they started selling applications on Steam

Linux doesn't even have proper gaming drivers ..

Would they just stop saying Windows 8 is going away from open model :wallbash:

2013 will finally be the year of Linux

Also , 2013 will also be the year of Playstation

On a serious note , Linux hardly gained any momentum in Vista era then what made you think it will gain marketshare now ??

Steam is also on mac , still the gaming scene on mac is absymal even though Apple tried their best to get drivers and support the developers

I'm not saying that Linux will take over everything or anything of that sort. I am just happy that we(the Linux users) will be getting at least more games than before. I personally loathe Windows(and wouldn't even get that DreamSpark membership if Windows wasn't required for gaming), but that doesn't mean that I'll make irrational predictions of Linux taking over the gaming scene.

I am not making fun of you .. It wasn't directed towards you but towards Valve

After Windows 8 announcement , Valve is acting weird

1st they abused MS and now they are acting as if Linux will rule the world

I had immense respect for Gabe and Valve but they are just spreading Bullshit for past 4-5 months .. :(

Been using Ubuntu on and off on the laptop for a while. Its nice (UI is a Mac rip off but still) and does everything I would want a windows PC to do.

But the problem is (rather obviously) developer support. Valve can get their games to run on Linux but that will be the extent of it. Kinda like Mac Steam support but even less in terms of what third parties will do.

So basically its all sound and fury at the moment. Its gonna boil down to Valve games only most of the times and they make what, 1 game per decade? :P

I dont care about Linux or Mac and wont care till they start playing all games natively. No matter how sucky or insecure or whatever Windows is, as long as it plays all games, I am fine with it. Gabe/Valve can go SDB.

Very true and I can still run Steam, Origin in Windows 8 (consumer preview), so what's Valve's point. After all Windows is Microsoft on OS, are they not allowed to open their Shop in their own product - why is this double standard Valve. I think Microsoft is doing exactly the right thing by bringing up everything closer -after all its their product and working on them for more years in compare to Valve started their Shop. I have nothing against Valve , I like steam and I think this is one of the best thing happened to PC gaming. But as a Gaming company, How many games they released ?? I know all their games are top notched, but they still make money within those numbers games and business model in Linux or any other platform.

At least we Linux users will get SOME games. Better than nothing.

Right,,

But I think Android (which is again a fork of Linux - if I am not wrong) will be a much better alternative to Windows, but Valve will not go their because Google have their own Shop. It's not that Valve care about Open source ,it's just they want a place where they can make more money easily without competition. Valve says things about Openness, did they ever release their financial number, like how many games they sold, how many TF2 hat they sold.

It will be fun to watch Microsoft bringing up everything their own like- Tablet (surface),Phone (rumoured Windows 8 phone by M$),Xbox (already established as a gaming system and extended entertainment system),Xbox Live-Digital Store (earlier - GFWL - yeah we know the previous failed attempt of MS), Lets see about competitor like Valve (in terms of digital distribution) and Apple do about it
