Headset for PS3

Hi,

I am looking for a Surround Sound Headset for PS3. Yes I do know about Astro, Turtle Beach etc, but the thing is they are not available in India.

One of my friend had bought Astro headset from amazon and it is unusable b'coz of some issue with mixamp. And i really don't take any risk.

I am thinking of buying Surround Sound Headset with Optical Input. Chat functionality is not required. I have been playing most of the games with no sound, it is really frustrating.

I have never used any Surround Sound or even Stereo Headset, so i don't know about them much.

I have search this on the net and found this headset with Optical Input. But i don't know if it will work.

Sennheiser RS220 (It has a optical Input and i don't know if it is surround sound headset)

Have anyone used this kind of setup with this or any other headset. Please let me know.

Audio Technica ATH-AD700 + turtle beachs DSS Surround sound processor (DSS2 is not that great) or if you can afford Astro Mixamp, although both TB and Astro use the same Dolby Surround sound chip, so the only benefit of using Astro is the chat Game mixer volume !!!!

This is from my own personal experience and turmoil of searching for an Audio system for over 3 months of reading various reviews and forum threads posted by users ....

Thanks for reply but as i said i want buy Headset which are available in India. Astro's doesn't have any service center in india.

Look at the following options --

  • Ozone Spark ~2200/-
  • Corsair Vengeance 1300 ~3500/-
  • Corsair Vengeance 1500 ~4500/-

Hope this helps, Cheerio!

P.S. -- Are PlayStation systems compatible with USB headsets?

Headset, Headphones, and a surround experience are 3 very varying categories with their own hardware requirements, i tried to give you the best Surround sound setup possible in the minimum amount of budget, ATH AD700 are sold by Pristinenote, and Turtle Beach DSS will have to be sourced from abroad.

Also what need to be understood is the difference between virtual and real surround sound systems.

So all this is very complicated and needs a lot of reading + testing of hardware( or in our case reading various reviews to get an overall picture )

Here is aplace you can start ---? http://www.head-fi.org/t/534479/mad-lust-envys-headphone-gaming-guide-updated-10-30-12-dt990-listings-merged-and-updated

Good luck and I hope you find what you need !!!

Regards !!

Most of my friends have bought Astro A40, Tritton AX720 but the problem is they are having some issues (Mixamp problem, AX720 left ear doesn't work) and they can't repair it b'coz service center's for those are not available in Inidia. If Astro were available in India, I would have bought Wireless Astro Mixamp and a good Surround Sound Sennheiser or any other headset.

I know the difference between Virtual and True Surround Sound and i okay with either of them.

What if i use a Setup like this:

PS3 Optical Out ---- Any 5.1 Amplifier ---- Headset.

This headset are for PC's. Do you think any headset with Optical Input will work with PS3.

Are USB headsets compatible with the PlayStation 3 and any specific reason to go for Optical out.

From what you are asking I can see that you haven't read too much into headphones and fidelities, I would request you to atleast go through the OP of the link i provided.

In either case, whichever way you look, you will not find a better VFM option than TB DSS, so that should answer your part about Any5.1 Amplifier, an Amplifier is not enough, it needs to have a virtual surround sound processing chip on it as well to provide some level of surround sound experience. AMP and Dolby Surround SOund are 2 different things. You are assuming them to be the same thing which is not.

The setup you are mentioning will give you sound, but it won't give you 'Surround Sound' experience, and in your OP surround sound was something that you wanted.

For Surround sound, I again reiterate that TB DSS + ATH AD700 are the best, affordable, VFM option.

To put it in simpler terms:-

Even if the source (that being your PS3) is surround Sound capable, and your Amplifieris a 5.1 amplifier, but it will only decode the signal and 5 speakers + 1 woofer will have to be connected to such an amplifier to achieve surround sound.

If you connect a stereo headset to a 5.1 amplifier, you will only get stereo output, you won't be getting a surround sound output via stereo speakers. This is why the need of virtual surround sound came into being.

Now with ATH- AD700 being stereo headphones, but when they get connected via DSS which has a surround sound processor chip certified of Dolby, the optical signal is converted into Virtual Suroound sound and thus even via Stereo speakers one is able to get Surround sound experience .

i hope you are able to get what I am trying to explain over here.

Okay. Amp is out

And i agree that TB DSS + ATH AD700 will provide better performance. The reason i am not going for these its not available in Inida. Read my earlier post in which i have mentioned the issue.

How long have you been using Turtle Beach DSS Surround Sound Processor and what if there is any issue with DSS, will i able to repair it in india.

I have been using it for over an year now, and I haven't faced any issues with it, I had One up for sale a few months ago, as I had bought 2 just in case something happens to 1, but since they were both in very good condition, I let go of one and sold it off !!!

Try ebay or other sites to get some kind of a good deal !!! or better if someone coming from abroad brings it with him for you, would save you a lot of moolah !!

Nope I don't think that will be possible !!

If you want to be covered 100% from all sides, then IMO in that case your options are very limited !!!!

None of the companies who produce such products have any sound base in India, so in that case you would have to look at other options !!! and more reading and researching is required to compare all that falls in such a category.

Skullcandy has bought Astro Gaming, hoping if skullcandy would distribute Astro products in India.

Or Sony Pulse Wireless Stereo Headset - Elite Edition but i don't think sony would be launching it in india.
