An expansion on the mysteries of the cult classic horror game Siren, this PlayStation 3 game is partially a retelling of events of the original game presented with entirely different characters, unfamiliar story threads and a brand new graphic engine. The game is now split into 12 episodes, each with an opening and ending sequence, and each comprised of parallel scenarios for multiple characters.

Siren: Blood Curse Hands-on

Can you survive the horror of another survival-horror game?

by Greg Miller

May 16, 2008 - The last time Americans battled the creepy/possessed citizens of a Japanese town, the year was 2004 and the game was called Siren. Now, the survival-horror entry to the videogame world has spawned a successor titled Siren: Blood Curse.

It's coming this summer. To the PlayStation Network. In episodes.

Well, exactly how the game's 12 episodes will be doled out is up in the air -- Sony's still trying to figure out if it should be a one game thing, packs of episodes, etc. -- but we did get our first chance to kick Siren's tires at Sony's pre-E3 event this afternoon.

Set in and around the Hanuda Mining town in Japan, Siren will cast you as seven different characters as the village falls under a ghoulish curse that turns everyone into some kind of mix between zombies and the Splicers in BioShock. It'll be your job to fight your way through the nasty messes -- the "shibito" we saw today were bleeding out their eyes and all over their ghost white skin and clothes -- and figure out how to reverse the curse. Of course, this is a survival horror game, so there's a grainy filter over the camera and everything is very dark. Good thing our hero's got a flashlight that's nearly always on. You can call up a map whenever you need it, and the mission and goals are displayed in an overlay on the game screen.

The demo we played cast us as Sam Monroe. Sam -- a man clad in a flannel shirt and who bears a striking resemblance to Alec Baldwin in Beetlejuice -- was coming to the mining village with his film crew to investigate what he thought was an urban legend about the curse. He wakes up disoriented and pissy, and then comes across a lady shibito and her hand sickle beating the holy hell out of a guy. Once the man goes down for the count, the female moves on and he stands up as a shibito.

However, Sam isn't some peace-first hippy filmmaker. With all hell breaking loose, it'll be up to you to grab items Sam can use as weapons. A button prompt appears when you come across an acceptable instrument. Our first tool was a lead pipe we pulled from a tunnel wall. With it in hand, we headed up the embankment, and the controller began to beat as if it was a heartbeat -- this is the game's tell that you're approaching an enemy. If you crouch, you'll quietly come up on the unsuspecting bad guy. Run and he or she will hear you -- although they never notice the flashlight cast on their back. Anyway, pipe in hand, we came across a female shibito and gave the attack command.

Sam beat the crap out of her. Tapping the button gives a quick shot and holding it puts some mustard on it. We held it, and Sam knocked her through a window and then beat her over the back a few more times. Stiff hits.

Toward the end of our demo, we came across a cabin and we're introduced to another one of the filmmakers named Melissa. Things aren't much better on her end, and as soon as we were reunited, a shibito began assaulting the house. We were told to brace the doors, so we moved Sam to a door, hit the button and were then told to shake the controller to put Sam's weight into it. We shook it, Sam stood like a proud redwood, and the shibito walked off.

siren-blood-curse-20080516113010247-000.jpg I think something is in my eye.We then went and beat that demon to death.

Later on, Sam would get a sickle of his own and finally a gun. Siren isn't afraid to toss the blood on there, so expect gushers when you lay into someone.

We only had a short time with the first level of Siren, but so far it seems like your traditional survival horror game mixed in with some brutal kills. However -- and we know it's early -- we have to throw up a red flag of caution and beg Sony to fix the camera. The grainy visual style and grotesque shibito seem cool enough, but the camera is suuuuuper-touchy. Moving through the level and battling the beasties was literally a headache.

Other than that, we're interested to see how this episodic title will play out when it hits the PSN this summer.
