The JACKAL
Don't pass such remarks if you don't know much about it. A brain to understand all this. Not everyone has that. Ohh sorry!! Didnt know i wasnt allowed to have an opinion about linux being 'shitty' .Was said casually and not meant to touch a nerve . Well i worked with linux many times , been thru fedora , ubuntu and red hat . Back when i did that crappy BE degree we had unix , and had to run ns simulators and a rover project for ISRO might i add .Even after all that i dont really want to use linux for my daily computing alrite , and it would be a crying shame if it was mandatory to use linux to log onto steam everyday. Pfft just because people dont engage in your 'brainy' discussions and dont try to act like a 'smart a*s' on a gaming forum doesnt mean they're ignorant. Linux back in the day was very inaccessible for newcomers. It has changed now. The recent Ubuntu editions are very intuitive to use, and it doesn't take a lot of "brains" for using it, at least not for everyday computing. In fact, my very small sister has been using Ubuntu for the past 2 years at home, and she doesn't even feel the need to boot into Windows anymore. Apart from gaming, there is NOTHING that a regular Windows user does that can't be done in Linux, and it's not even difficult like it used to be, way back. Aftrunner
There is a typo. His name is Garry Newell. And yeah, I imagine this will be pre made PCs (possibly partnered with someone like Alienware) running windows. I very seriously doubt even Valve can get Linux in any shape to make it a competitive gaming platform.
Ne0
linux uses openGL afaik, and both ps3 / wii use some variant of openGL libraries (don't sue me if i'm wrong, just remember reading it somewhere ), so it might not be THAT hard to make games for linux ! But the question is, why would anyone buy steambox or whatever its called running linux , when they could procure it free of cost legally, and run it on commodity hardware maybe a medium gaming rig ? Unless its priced very low of course, which doesn't make sense, as it needs to now compete with the next gen h/w (rumored to be capable of running dx11.1) ! Aftrunner
Thing is its not really that simple. You would have to get third parties on board to do more work to make that work. Extra work that will benefit a mere fraction of the current PC userbase that will buy this "console". Then there is the thorny issue of getting the thousands of existing old games to work on your new platform. I have no idea how they can get them to work on Linux. Would you buy a 700 USD Steam console if it didnt play like 95% of your existing steam games? I imagine no one would. Like I said, most likely scenario is some sort of hardware partnered with Alienware that runs on Win 7 and has a bunch of custom made Big screen apps (like Browser, media player etc) along with Steam. Hardly a game changer.

ALPHA17
^^ Even PC games of a certain generation(s) were leaning towards / using OpenGL! to power themselves. Android runs using OpenGL! so it is not an impossible task, just that the major studios, publishers have to realize this and work in that direction. For that STEAM needs bait and the STEAM-box OR whatever seems to be the culmination of that thought process. Apart from that, I think Valve might partner with hardware OEM's and third-party manufacturers to certify certain components like graphic cards, processors as STEAM-box compliant and you can cobble together a system of your choice and obtain a license from STEAM to put it under the STEAM-box ambit. Fair enough for me. I have never tried Linux Try using Ubuntu, it is not as bad as 'some' members are painting it. Only issue is that AMD's / ATi's drivers often leave a lot to be desired but they are still better than nVidia on the count that the latter wilfully castrates performance of its cards in a Linux / Open Source environment. Solitaire
So basically you guys want Valve to make something that's closed and more difficult to modify yet you freely criticize Microsoft when they try to do the same as far as their "app store" or whatever it's called on W8 goes though they still let you install whatever the hell you want on Windows Double standards. I'm guessing most gamers would be happy putting together their own systems and they don't need Steam certification or what not to pick components either. I would use Linux but for the fact that it takes more effort (I'm pretty good with programming and terminal commands but I still don't want to take the extra effort) to do something than I need with Windows. Also plenty of drivers suck a*s on Linux including but not limited to GPU drivers. Whether companies intentionally gimp them or not, all I care about is the end user experience that I have with the OS and in that respect Windows wins. Likewise I prefer the refinement of Office on Windows to all the free stuff I can get on Linux used for the same purpose. YMMV but until this stuff changes (I agree Ubuntu today is far far easier to use than when I first started using Ubuntu and Redhat) and gaming is easy on Linux, I'm not switching (now that I can get free Windows I have no reason in particular to switch either )
spindoctor
don't know where you people are coming up with these notions that valve will try to switch to linux for gaming and that they're going to create a closed ecosystem like the consoles. this is just going to be a gaming computer for people who don't want to build their own pc. it'll strip windows of the junk it loads up with and use that to power steam in big picture mode. an attempt to provide the console experience except using a pc instead of proprietary hardware. The Windows App Store fiasco is that they want already running, perfectly stable applications to be re-certified to be available on the App Store and have slapped on a bunch of stupid regulation on the Store itself (no Adult content, I am not a GTA fan but I see what is happening here). We want a cut of the monies (Apple style). They want to cut out Publishers from the loop not understanding that it is a symbiotic relation and both parties benefit in the long run. But I am not a business expert / analyst, so I think I will wait and see how things play out. Cheers! About developers and OEM's gimping drivers, wasn't that the main reason people do not pick up Linux (OR any open-source distribution) in general, I am not crying wolf but 2 +2 =4 (in basic arithmetic) and I can do that. Choron ka raja
I love it how people talking about how easy Ubuntu is, hate windows 8 for being dumbed down. And telling everyone that apart from few drivers issue, Linux is stable. Same guys suggest Windows gets BSOD because of drivers, or crappy software, but that makes Windows unstable. In all honesty, Linux is not a viable gaming platform, even considering OpenGl. Devs don't care about OpenGL, they want easy stuff. There is a reason why devs preferred to code for Xbox rather than PS3. Being fully customizable also mean, there will tonnes of websites offering free games within a week, like it happened for Android. @Gaurav I know what you are trying to do. Don't worry, everyone will be buying the next xbox. Just make sure you guys do a good job.

You do not want to use Linux (OR any Open Source distro), please do not use it. Tell me will you fund development, take part in said development of drivers for components that are years old and getting no recompense (monetary OR material) for your work? Tell me will a Publicly held Corporation do that? And yes, Linux is stable for day-to-day tasks and doesn't cost you nothing (literally). Why are you bringing in consoles here? Plus calling this a console is kinda lame, it's probably gonna be a pre-configured PC like some folks have suggested here.
