Ueda On The Last Guardian, ICO And Shadow Of The Colossus

Speaking with Dengeki, Fumito Ueda revealed some details regarding The Last Guardian as well as the ICO and Shadow of the Colossus HD Collection.

Ueda believes that with the Tokyo Game Show trailer of The Last Guardian, they were able to portray realistic animal-like movements with Torico, the giant griffin-like creature. However, he also believes that there are still areas that can be and expects to improve.

Torico will be moving on its own, with players being able to give out simple directions. Torico's a living, breathing creature, so it behaves that way in that it likes certain things and dislikes others. Players can use such items to guide him.

Ueda would not divulge any specifics regarding controls, but did share that it will be much like ICO where there isn't a blatant HUD or gauges.

He also talks a bit about the ICO and Shadow HD collection. Both games will be supporting 3D in addition to the upgraded visuals. Shadow of the Colossus was originally conceived with 3D in mind, so Ueda believes that it's only natural to support 3D.

Trophy support will also be added.

The Last Guardian underwent a sex change

Every time news on this game surfaces, I squeeee like a little girl. Which is quite apt because the protagonist for Team ICO’s upcoming game used to be just that: a little girl.

In an interview with PSM3, Fumito Ueda (head of Team ICO) discussed the original design decisions behind the lead character, which started off as a young girl. Owing to various design concerns, that character changed to the young boy that we all know so well from the game’s trailers.

The griffon-like creature is known as the Trico (a clever name considering this is Team ICO’s third game) and is a large, strong force in the title. To balance that out, Ueda chose a female lead who “was light on her feet” but rather susceptible (flashes of Yorda from ICO here ).

“The Trico is a very powerful creature. If we’d had a beefed-up, powerful hero, it would have thrown off the balance a little bit, so the design naturally drove me to create an adolescent female character who was light on her feet. But in the end I decided a boy would have a little more grip to climb the Trico. Another problem is that girls tend to wear skirts, and The Last Guardian features a lot of climbing…”

The age-old problem of up-skirt camera shots and a healthy dose of gender stereotyping can be blamed for the change!

Ueda On Last Guardian: Pressure, Emotion, Inspiration

The Last Guardian remains one of the most anticipated PlayStation 3 games of the generation. This means that when the mastermind behind the project speaks, we tend to listen.

Team ICO guru Fumito Ueda answered a few questions at Electronic Theatre recently, and he spoke a little about the intended audience, emotional attachment, and the pressure of "not wanting to disappoint everybody." Considering the wait and the legacy of ICO and Shadow of the Colossus, it's true that many are expecting something super special, and it's clear that Ueda understands. When asked if he's glad that he can finally lift the veil and reveal the project, he says, "I am glad. But more than that, I regret that I kept everybody waiting." And then adds that he feels "a certain pressure and I will do my best not to disappoint everybody." He went on to talk about the creative process a bit:

"First of all, with respect to the gameplay, we slowed down the pace to focus our efforts on narrative production and the polishing of each level. ICO and Shadow of the Colossus were well received by many gamers. However, we felt that there were people out there who the games didn't reach, the kind of people who wouldn’t usually play games, and so, to appeal to these people, we set our theme on animals and their habitats."

As for the gameplay, Ueda confirms that it'll be very dynamic and even realistic in a way, as the boy's interactions with that gigantic mystical creature will be...well, exactly as you'd expect them to be; i.e., exactly how a little human boy might try to communicate with a mammoth - seemingly friendly - animal.

"The boy must guide the creature, never being entirely sure whether his intentions are understood, and bearing in mind its surroundings and personality. Under the boy's guidance, the creature will display extraordinary abilities."

Ueda also confirmed they would take PlayStation Move and 3D compatibility "into consideration" for the game. Lastly, he says the reason they "don't use numbers" in their titles is because they want to reach new players with every new project, which we find to be an impressive approach. Considering that sequels and franchises usually guarantee financial success (provided the games are good, of course), most developers go this route. But not these guys.

Oh, and make sure to read up on the emotional aspect and how "all expressions must be believable." This game should be amazing.

Retailers Date “The Last Guardian”

Several online retailers have suddenly listed Team Ico’s The Last Guardian for a 7th of October release date. The game, which is a follow-up of sorts from both Ico and Shadow of the Colossus, has been penned by Tesco, ASDA, The Hut, Zavvi and Woollies, suggesting somebody’s told somebody something.

If this is true, then the silence from the likes of GAME and other specialist stores is slightly odd, as they’re not featuring the game with any specific date – yet.

Bear in mind, too, that most of the sites above fall within The Hut’s umbrella, so a blanket memo from one central location could have prompted all of them to ping up with the date simultaneously.

We’ve talked at length about The Last Guardian, which featured at number two in our top 100 of 2011. “The Last Guardian isn’t just an incredibly appealing game from a technical and artistic perspective, it’s also a clear, resounding gesture of gaming’s intention of growing up and of its aspiration to progress,” we said, “cementing itself as a recognised and meaningful medium.”

“You don’t have to like The Last Guardian based on its gameplay or aesthetics, but you should at least appreciate what impact it will have – and is having – on the industry.”

We asked Sony whether the date was official, but were told that they hadn’t announced a date yet at all.

The Last Guardian info blowout from Latest PSM3 issue

psm3.jpg

The latest issue of PSM3 is carrying an extensive feature on Team ICO’s upcoming game, The Last Guardian. One of Gamersmint’s readers has an issue with him, and we’ve collected all the juicy details for you below.

For the first time ever, we get to know a lot of details regarding the game and it appears that the game is poised to be a masterclass. Fumito Ueda split the beans to PSM3 regarding his upcoming project.

The magazine got some hands-on time with the game and they got to experience the first level of the game which showed the very first “emotional interactions” between the boy and Torico. The game looks stunning according to the magazine and the world is filled with vibrant colours.

We’ve rounded up all the important details which the magazine carried about the game below:

The Last Guardian will be similar to Ico

The game’s original music is not the one presented in the trailer. It’s just a test track being used.

Ueda stated that he’s allowed to achieve things with the PS3 which he couldn’t manage to fulfill due to the tech on offer with PS2.

Torico’s feathers, butterflies, dust, particles, everything is managed in real time, many great animations were all made by hand.

The game we will not be as confined as in Ico.

Torico can apparently eliminate the guards, the child however can’t do that (so he will be playing undercover when he is alone)

Ueda didn’t reveal who the Last Guardian is, Torico or the boy. He said we’ll have to find out.

Team ICO has sought technical advice from all in-house Sony Studios wherever possible.

Torico-AI will focus on that moods and reactions to the environment. The game will be based on its relationship with the child to solve puzzles and explore the fortress.

Guards in armor are actually shadows, when their armor glows, they can vanish.

Ueda, does not consider his work as art. It could go much, much further in the concept art but that would make it difficult for some fun and commercial viability of titles. He must find the right balance.

Ueda would love the game to release on time, however he won’t rush things.

Ueda is wary not to make the game’s puzzles too difficult, however, he wants to maintain a good amount of challenge and hence they’re constantly beta-testing to measure the difficulty of puzzles and find the right balance.

There will be less fighting sequences in TLG than in ICO

Ueda has assured that the game will be released by the end of this year, atleast in Japan.

The Last Guardian is exclusive to PS3 and is scheduled for a holiday release in 2011.
