Platinum Games shows interest in buying Darksiders

Today has proven to be one of the saddest days for the most diehard Darksiders fans. When THQ's assets were being sold off, no one bought Vigil Games, spelling certain doom for Darksiders. But for optimists, there may still be a chance the series would survive through another studio, say if the IP were bought up after the fact.

For instance, Platinum Games' executive director and producer Atsushi Inaba posted on Twitter this afternoon that he would "love" to buy Darksiders. The original tweet is in Japanese, but translated, it reads: "Oh man in THQ's big sale it looks like nobody's bought Darksiders ... I'd love to buy that (if it was cheap)."

Obviously, saying something like that on Twitter versus actually handing over the money are two different things. Still, the idea is rather interesting, and many of us are just praying for a better outcome than the one Vigil got.

Volition is going to die soon..Dead Island Riptide looks really bad.

You got it all wrong...KM is the parent company of Deep silver (publisher behind Dead island games)... Dead Island is developed by Techland..If Dead island looks bad then blame Techland not KM or Deep silver... Volition is a much much better studio than Techland and Volition will make SR not Techland.....

No ip gonna die except Darksiders :P... Homefront is in safe hands of Crytek ,same goes for Relic and COH games....

Ubisoft will shut down South Park,

South Park is owned by Viacom, Ubisoft just bought the publishing rights..They can't shut it down, if they refused then Obsidian and Viacom will find some other publisher...Obsidian is an independent studio not owned by Ubi.....Ubisoft just bought publishing right of the South park games coz it looks promising and also quite popular...Same goes for WWE and Metro series.. Metro series is owned by 4A not THQ or KM...KM just bought publishing right of Metro not the IP or 4A studio....

READ

Ubisoft has purchased the rights to publish South Park: The Stick of Truth as well as the entire THQ Montreal, the current developer of Assassin’s Creed creator Patrice Desilets’ project codenamed 1666.: Ubisoft has confirmed the purchase, noting in a statement that "THQ Montreal will join Ubisoft’s development teams." Ubisoft also says that South Park: The Stick of Truth "is scheduled for release in calendar 2013.")

Koch Media (owner of Dead Island publisher Deep Silver) has agreed to purchase Saints Row developer Volition as well as the publishing rights to the Metro franchise.

They bought SR IP and Volition and publishing right of Metro not the ip....4A and only 4A will develop Metro games.....Same goes for South Park and WWE :D/>/>/>/>

4A is independent and not owned by KM...

Same goes for Relic and COH games....

Most prolly we shall see a continuation of Warhammer games franchise as well. As SEGA owns the license and relic has been doing RTS titles based on them for quite some time now.

Koch PR:

Koch Media, a leading, independent producer and marketer of digital entertainment products in Europe and North America, has secured the intellectual property rights for two of the most popular and successful THQ franchises, Metro and Saints Row, as well as Illinois-based development studio, Volition, as THQ continues to liquidate its assets in closed auctions this week.

Deep Silver, Koch Media’s international publishing powerhouse, will lead all further development and marketing on the Saints Row and Metro franchises, each of which boast millions of units sold worldwide and vast, dedicated fan bases.

"Koch Media welcomes the addition of these magnificent franchises to the Koch Media family of entertainment properties.", said Dr. Klemens Kundratitz, CEO of Koch Media GmbH. "With more than 200 games on notable platforms globally, and its proven success creating renowned franchises like Dead Island, Deep Silver is perfectly positioned to lead these brands into the next generation of interactive entertainment for fans around the world."

"These franchises hold a special place in the hearts and minds of anyone who loves exceptional video games," said Geoff Mulligan, COO of Deep Silver, Inc. "We’re thrilled to usher in a new era for these franchises and are proud to welcome the visionaries and talented forces at Volition on board."

"Deep Silver already has a track record for out-of-the-ordinary games, including the immensely successful Dead Island brand. Both the Saints Row and the Metro franchises perfectly fit into our future lineup and strategy. We're really excited to lead these well-respected licenses into a bright new future.", said Menno van der Bil, International Commercial Director, Deep Silver "We also welcome the legendary development studio Volition to the Koch Media/Deep Silver group!"

Koch Media and Deep Silver will roll out future plans for each franchise in the coming months.

PERSONAL NOTE FROM THQ HEADS

The work that you all have done as part of the THQ family is imaginative, creative, artistic and highly valued by our loyal gamers. We are proud of what we have accomplished despite today's outcome.

It has been our privilege to work alongside the entire THQ team. While the company will cease to exist, we are heartened that the majority of our studios and games will continue under new ownership. We were hoping that the entire company would remain intact, but we expect to hear good news from each of the separate entities that will be operating as part of new organizations.

For those THQ employees who are part of entities that are not included in the sale, we are confident that the talent you have displayed as part of THQ will be recognized as you take the next steps in your career.

Thank you all for your dedication and for sharing your talent with the THQ team. We wish you the best of luck and hope you will keep in touch.

Sincerely,

Brian Farrell Chief Executive Officer & Jason Rubin President

Vigil Games Lead Combat Designer Ben Cureton wrote a touching post on NeoGAF which described the office as a warzone.

My name is Ben Cureton, and I was the Lead Combat Designer at Vigil Games. I'm sitting at my desk among... what appears to be a warzone. The walls look bare. It's quiet.

The seats are empty.

We've all been on edge for the past couple months... and more so, the last couple weeks. I mean, I'm sure you can imagine what it's like to wonder if you will have a job tomorrow. Most of us here joked about it just to keep the mood light, but we all knew what could happen. Now I look around and I realize... it did happen.

Am I sad? Well yea. I've been in this industry for 20 years. Seriously. Two decades. I've been laid off more than once. It sucks every time. But am I sad I don't have a job? Not really... I'm sure I'll get another one eventually. I'm sad because it won't be THIS job. It won't be at Vigil. That's why I'm sad. The people I waged war with are no longer together. The people that I bled with, vented with, argued with (often times LOUDLY), and kicked back with... these people will never be together again in the same combination.

Not that it was perfect. But what is perfect? Did I like coming to work? Yes. Was I proud of the work that I did? Yes. More importantly, was I proud of the work that WE did? Absolutely. I knew, without a shadow of the doubt, that the project we were working on (Codenamed: Crawler) was going to blow people away. In fact, it DID blow people away. We did, in TWO months, what many companies haven't done in a year. The pride of knowing that no one was doing anything like us was so satisfying, it kept us coming to work and giving 100% every single day, even through the dark times.

... so maybe you can imagine what it feels like when you read the list of who bought what only to discover your name is not on the list. Why? Did we do something wrong? Were we not good enough? Were we not worth 'anything?' Imagine that.

Vigil was filled with people that I would put up against the best in the industry. People that made my work better, people that made me a better designer, and people that made me a better person. And now they are gone.

Their seats are empty.

It's OK, though. I guess this post makes it sound a bit melodramatic. Seriously... if you work in the video game industry you have to be resilient. Doing what you love often comes with a price - anyone who has been around for a while can tell you that. Today, that price has been paid. That being said, I'd still never dissuade anyone from following their dreams if their dream is to make video games. While it's not as romantic as it sounds, it's sure a hell of a lot of fun.

So don't cry for the people at Vigil. We made games for game players. I have no Horror stories from working here... only Honor stories. Through both praise and critiques alike, our goal was always to make a product as if we, ourselves, were the end-user. We may have gotten pushed and pulled in certain directions by forces out of our control, we were always in it to make games for game players. And that's what we did.

I can only hope that those spared from the other companies remain employed long into the future. There is not much worse than false hope, and these people deserve to continue making great games. You may not know their names, but they exist, and they bleed, sweat, and cry for your entertainment. I mean that honestly, with no negativity. They do it... no, WE do it... because we want you to have a good time.

In closing, I can only say thank you to the fans of Vigil games. Your support means more than you can imagine. Your feedback (both positive and negative) gave us long-lasting insight that we will all take with us, wherever we may go. You are the reason we made Darksiders 1 &2... and you are the reason we will continue to make games.

And with that... my seat is empty.

Lead Combat Designer

Vigil Games

P.S. This is no place for a horse.

:(

Respect, is all I can give to them.

So Sega now owns Relic,CA and Sports Interactive. Who woulda thunk SEGA of all the people would become major players in the PC gaming market . From Genesis to playstation to PC

Ummm... they were pretty strong since the day they backed Creative Assembly, it is a niche player and very respected amongst its followers.

They also did a few shooters, ALPHA PROTOCOL comes to mind, was a shooter-RPG with some very flimsy shooter principles. Now they are doing ALIENS with GEARBOX lets see how that ends up.

Good.I hope they will use new engine now... :P/> ..Which studio will develop it ? Yukes ?

2K please. Do NOT want Yukes again. They've been churning out the same old sh*t for quite some time now. New developer, new engine and a new direction to the WWE games. Hopefully with more emphasis on online multiplayer, like Fifa. WWE is a ton of fun when played with friends.

I'd like to see Visual Concepts make a WWE game. I'd play that even with today's shitty WWE roster.

Yuke's is capable of mixing things up though. I think the franchise stagnating may have also been THQ trying to save money. Yuke's did a phenomenal job on the UFC games. Those were miles ahead of the work they were doing on WWE.

Yes. THQ were the ones holding them back. They wanted to add little features each making sure fans kept on buying it every year. The game took 1 step forward and 2 steps back with each iteration, with some exceptions.

There were many topics on various WWE gaming forums wishing for THQ to go bankrupt or sell WWE license since 2010-11 (huge uproar and outrage when deal was extended to 2017 by WWE) and hoping 2K to take over. Guess what? God listened.

What if the new steambox is actually the new Dreamcast?
