They are never compared to great books like song of ice and fire, lotr, wheels of time, malzan so on. Even after the Englsh translation robs so much of their power, the books written by Andrzej Sapkowski are far superior to LoTR in my opinion. There is a much better understanding of racial, class, regional issues. There is dirty politics and dirtier characters. Half of The Witcher's quest system is based of the books conundrums. Song of Fire and Ice saga is actually a better comparison than LoTR is. The only thing Witcher or any other 'fantasy' setting takes from LoTR is the tropes, lithe elves, stocky dwarves and so on. By googling you can find lots of articles by various authors. I can't explain myself any better for sure, so I won't even try. Also lotr lore isn't only limited to lotr 3 books. Silmarillion is perfect middle earth lore book. It explains how the universe is created, how its run and maintained in larger scale than any other work. Also have many books dedicated to explain landscapes, cultures, history. Lotr universe is by far most detailed universe(only a step behind our earth itself). Have you read the three short Witcher books (translated) that have been translated to make this judgement? The world in The Witcher saga itself might not be as detailed as J.R.R. Tolkien's but it has a lot more common with a real living world rather than, I am going to save the world. It is easier to debate political machinations and socio-religious differences when there are different races in the fray, the way The Witcher uses them. The way the Scoia'tael are portrayed (terrorist / heroes) and how your choices cast you. There are philosophical and religious connotation in both books, but the ones in LoTR are very simple. There is no shade of grey and the peeling of layers on them is very base. If you will read The Witcher books you will understand. I have read both the books (LoTR and The Witcher) and can very easily state that the latter is far more mature in tone and placing. I have not read Wheels of Time or The Song of Fire and Ice (neither follow Game of Thrones) so I abstain from judging or passing comments on them. Also lotr lore isn't only limited to lotr 3 books. There are plenty of follow up books that J.R.R. Tolkien penned after the success of The three epics, the Silmarillion is an excellent book about how he built up the world. But none of this holds up against my biggest complaint that I find it to be aloof of morality. Do you see Frodo worrying about not slaying a monster or who to share his bread with. Do you see any tension between rival factions of Middle Earth that leads to bloody pogroms being carried out (referencing The Holocaust here). If you feel witcher invoked suspense and tension in you game of thrones will KILL you if you have a week heart. Atleast in witcher you know garalt won't die but in game of thrones you won't even have that luxory. If you want morality or politics and more mature fantasy just watch game of thrones series. It is a fine read to enter the world of fantasy but mature books are far superior to it. Comparing The Witcher game to a TV Series which has a propensity to dispense its characters does not prove anything, a TV series is just that, passive entertainment, you do not have a say in its continuity unlike a video game. A video game has limits too but at-least I can make a choice about which character dies and which lives, that itself is powerful if implemented right. For a game, particularly an RPG, the plot line and prose of Andrzej Sapkowski is superior because of the amount of layers it holds. Heroic RPG's come in the flavour of The Elder Scrolls saga and we know how much you love that. Now can we please NOT discuss, LoTR, XBox ONE, PlayStation 4 in The Witcher 3 thread.
