Call of Duty “has almost ruined a generation of shooter players,” says Tripwire Interactive

Recommended Posts

Was checking up Facebook and suddenly noticed this post on news feed...couldn't stop myself from sharing.

How Call of Duty “has almost ruined a generation of shooter players,” according to the creator of Killing Floor and Red Orchestra 2:

Earlier this month I visited Killing Floor and Red Orchestra 2 creator Tripwire Interactive to play Rising Storm, the upcoming standalone expansion to RO2 (look for a preview on Monday). After the demo, Tripwire President John Gibson and I got talking about the state of first-person shooters, and Gibson laid out a detailed criticism about the way Call of Duty takes “individual skill out of the equation.” Gibson also expressed frustration over how difficult it had been trying to design a mode for Red Orchestra 2 that appealed to Call of Duty players.

What did they complain about?

Gibson: It’s the gameplay mechanics that they become used to. The way that players instantly accelerate when they move, they don’t build up speed. “The weapons really don’t have a lot of power” [in RO2]. They’re all very weak. The way they handle… They’re like: “I hate Red Orchestra, I can’t play it.” Well, why? “Because the guy doesn’t move like he does in Call of Duty. Call of Duty has great movement.” Why is it great? “Because it just is, I just like the way it works.” So you don’t like the momentum system in Red Orchestra? “Yeah, it sucks, it’s clunky, it’s terrible.” Well, why? “It’s just because I’m used to this.”

One of the things that Call of Duty does, and it’s smart business, to a degree, is they compress the skill gap.

Do you think it’s a matter of patience?

Have these players lost their sense of patience? Gibson:I think that’s part of it. The game is kind of spoonfeeding them, and making them feel great when they’re not. And like I said, that’s smart business, and I don’t blame Infinity Ward for wanting to do that. They’re selling millions of games and they have lots of people enjoying it, but I think there’s a depth of enjoyment there that a lot of these players are missing out on. And when you try to get them to branch out, their knee-jerk reaction is “The training wheels have come off, I’m gonna fall!” And I hate to see that.

Elliot Cannon, Rising Storm Lead Designer: Or creating a game that feels like you might be in a war, and you might die?

Gibson: Yeah. That’s one of the things that we do in our games, and it’s fear. When you play… I know there are modes in Left 4 Dead that are more hardcore, but when you play Left 4 Dead, and I’m really friends with Valve, so I hope they don’t get mad at me, but you do get spikes of adrenaline. But eventually that wears off because you figure out, well, as long as we stick together we’re never gonna die. In Killing Floor, when the Fleshpound shows up, you could be screwed. Half your team is probably gonna die. Your heart rate goes up, you’re freaking out, like “I can actually lose this shooter.” And if there’s no fear, there’s no tension, the victory is shallow. We want there to be some fear.

I agree with him..Do you?

I grew up playing CoD (WW, MW1-2)..but lately the series has turned sh*t after BO/MW3..

(but then again, (before trolls and fan-boys jump in) it's personal opinion).

Sounds like someone is jealous that their game doesn't even register in the top 100 on Steam.

People didn't stop playing RO2 because of COD. They stopped because it was completely f**king broken and incomplete at launch. I remember I pre-ordered it and was so excited for the first few days until I realized just how completely broken the game was. I rarely regret buying games even if they are mediocre but damn this one takes the cake as one of the worst shooters I've ever wasted money on.

I kinda get what he is saying. But I dont think the blame lies with CoD. The game does what it does EXTREMELY well.

The problem starts when developers/publishers try to copy what CoD does to bring over the CoD audience.

I mean this -

Gibson also expressed frustration over how difficult it had been trying to design a mode for Red Orchestra 2 that appealed to Call of Duty players.

is EXACTLY what I mean. If you are compromising your gameplay design in a way that will make CoD players like it then its not CoD's fault. Its yours. You cant expect to go for the same audience that loves CoD and then turn around and blame CoD if that audience doesnt like your hybrid. I am not singling out Tripwire BTW, it goes for any developer that tried to do this.

Instead aim small and try to do right by the audience that hasnt only played CoD.

Call of duty did what it does and it did it right .

Its not an industry for being more hardcore than the other game , they made a system that spoonfeeds player and the player like it . End of story , its a game , do whatever it takes to appeal to the audience , the aim is to make the game as enjoyable as possible not as realistic as possible. If people enjoy realism then they buy games like these but most people enjoy CoD .

the only thing that comes in my mind when someone says "Red Orchestra" is a game that randomly appeared in my steam library and disappeared after 5 days

Game has been featured in STEAM's free weekend deals. That is why it appeared and disappeared.

For your info, even COD blops 2 has been featured in STEAM's free weekend deal. -_-

There is no correlation save the fact that both are FPS's and targetting the same core audience just that the path's involved are disparate.

While CoD goes for easier gratification, Red Orchestra (and Tripwire Interactive) started as a Total Conversion MOD for the Unreal Engine incorporating real bullet ballistics, recoil systems and wounding (you got to patch yourself in-case you are hit) in a World War II setting.

Unfortunately not a lot of people seem to like that kind of challenge.

We get the results in front of us.

I must admit that times have changed, gamers are not so patient like they were 8-10 years back..all people want now is run and gun..but it fells nice to play a few games like this now and then.. Remember the delta force franchise? it was also nice especially Black hawk down.. quite authentic..

You are pulling my leg, right.

Delta Force is to CoD as Hidden and Dangerous is to ARMA for the previous generation.

You guys act funny

At times

If you thought I was trying to be funny or sarcastic, no. I was serious and being as polite as possible.

He is an a**hole for pulling down competition in negative light.

Maybe, maybe not but there is a grain of truth in what he says. After playing CoD do you think you will go back to a real simulator environment (ARMA) or even something as tough as Red Orchestra knowing that you might bounce of it.

After attempting to play, you will get fed up and return to playing CoD / BattleField / <insert arcade shooter multi-player here> because it is easy to access and its mechanics suit your tastes.

So please learn to accommodate other P.o.V's or it is very easy to put down by saying it is lame or said statement is being prudish. Aren't you being one?

P.S. -- How would you feel if I called Killzone a HALO clone for the PlayStation without having played the series?

If I wanted realism I would have joined the army

You jelly?! :naughty:

I am not that petty, Sir, live in your mole-hole.

About the first statement, again, think before opening your mouth.
