There was enough space for survival, wasn't there? How would they come out of water anyway? That was the state of survival for everyone. Inside the water. For all plants and animals.

 

Was it that plants came out first, started appearing on land and organisms followed? Survival is not a very fitting answer for me.

yes. plants did come on land before animals did. one thing apart from the regular 'survival' theory is that due to photosynthesis, land and its atmosphere became heavily oxidised and some species those who werent averse to more oxygen, rather prefered more oxygen, began moving land wards.

But how would the earliest beings under water prefer more oxygen? They didn't know what more oxygen felt like and had evolved under water for conditions that were..under water.

 

In other places some have put theories that for intelligence to evolve we needed tools for which we needed fire and opposable thumbs to use those tools so we needed to be above water. But. Evolution is not pre-selection. It does not have a fixed direction. To say that we needed these to reach where we are is to assume we had to, had to reach where we are.

 

Intelligence could have evolved in some other way under water too (again we are assuming that intelligence had to evolve) Speech and information passing could have evolved (in some unknown way to us right now) under water too.

Well because oxygen dissolved in water is less compared to land. Fishes adapt to it (explains their rapid mouth movement), others have to reach for surface every once in a while.

Absolutely correct, except for the last part.. organisms preferred the surface not because their was plenty of oxygen but because there was plenty to eat. And the bigger organisms (higher in the food chain followed).
