Houndini
Well because oxygen dissolved in water is less compared to land. Fishes adapt to it (explains their rapid mouth movement), others have to reach for surface every once in a while. Maybe that prompted them to prefer the surface? Rapid mouth (and gill) movement is not normal AFAIK. Suggests some disease or lack of oxygen. avkash
Sunny is not normal. There is no need to analyse any symptoms at all for this.
Nemo
Absolutely correct, except for the last part.. organisms preferred the surface not because their was plenty of oxygen but because there was plenty to eat. And the bigger organisms (higher in the food chain followed). why ? for them to eat, the food must be there on land in the first place. we are wondering how the food itself got to land. Remember, plants too were sea dwellers for a long time in the beginning, and when they started moving, animals/fishes started following them not very long after, some 30 or so mn years later (not a big number in grander scheme of things)

★ Kani ★
Screw the haters. (Shantz and all ) yes. plants did come on land before animals did. one thing apart from the regular 'survival' theory is that due to photosynthesis, land and its atmosphere became heavily oxidised and some species those who werent averse to more oxygen, rather prefered more oxygen, began moving land wards. But how would the earliest beings under water prefer more oxygen? They didn't know what more oxygen felt like and had evolved under water for conditions that were..under water. In other places some have put theories that for intelligence to evolve we needed tools for which we needed fire and opposable thumbs to use those tools so we needed to be above water. But. Evolution is not pre-selection. It does not have a fixed direction. To say that we needed these to reach where we are is to assume we had to, had to reach where we are. Intelligence could have evolved in some other way under water too (again we are assuming that intelligence had to evolve) Speech and information passing could have evolved (in some unknown way to us right now) under water too. DishuBOSS
Alright peeps.. here is another post related to the thread; BUDHUA (बुढुआ): Something In the Water In Northern Indian, there are many swamps, lakes or really big puddles of water left after a good rain. In some areas, these water bodies shimmer with water 365 days. Some of these bodies are deep enough that you could enjoy a good swim. And this is what creates the problem we are to read about. Besides humans, fishes and frogs, there is one more thing that swims in some of these waterbodies. These are called Budhuas. Q: What is a Budhua ? A: Budhua is supposedly a paranormal entity that lives underwater. However, it can come out of water when it desires but its main strength lies only underwater. Q: What does a Budhua do ? A: Budhua likes to drown people. It grabs anyone who comes to its water body and tries to drag it underwater with it. It is really powerful underwater. Q: How a Budhua is created ? A: Old tales say you become a Budhua either; (1) if you die by drowning , or (2) if you are drowned by another Budhua. In both the circumstances, if you die an untimely death by drowning in a puddle, it is a good chance that you will become a Budhua and will spend the rest of your time trying to recruit whoever comes your way. Q: How to tackle a Budhua ? A: It is said that its powerless if it comes out of the water, and thus it prefers living and preying underwater. So overcoming a Budhua requires sheer strength and will power. Example: (I read this tale in one old 'Kadambini' magazine). In villages when a 'Khaat' or 'Chaar-Pai'(http://0.static.wix.com/media/92457240f9f461a53ff9ea6093315b36.wix_mp_1024) is infested by 'Khatmal' (bedbugs), people put it in a puddle or any other water body for it to soak water overnight. And after the bugsleave (they cant survive underwater), people take their Khaat back to home. There was this guy named Prakash in some village. Prakash left the village when he was ateenager and lived with his uncle in Meerut. He used to come back to the village whenever he got time. So once, while Prakash was in the village, he left his Khaat in one of the puddles, and wentback home. The next evening, when he came back to collect his khaat, Prakash felt as if someone was dragging him inside the water. He looked carefully and saw a human figure rising from the water which was sticking to his leg. This figure had his leg in its grasp and wasdragging him in the deeper end. Prakash left his Khaat and started resisting. The struggle started, but the human figure was winning. Soon it was able to drag Prakash's head inside the water and it was here when Prakash saw its face. Prakash didnt give and kept resisting, but the spirit was more powerful and dominated him.Fortunately, some other villagers saw Prakash's legs coming out of the water and rushed to his rescue. After a brief tussle, Prakash was out of the water, but was barely moving. People carriedhim home on his own Khaat and there he regained his senses. He retold the whole sequence and this is when he was told that the figure he encounteredwas called 'Budhua' and it was trying to drown him. Prakash also told the villagers one more thing. He said that he was able to see its faceand it reminded him of another kid from the village called 'Gulab'. The villagers were stunned. Prakash was told that Gulab died by drowning in the same puddle a few years back.

NO SCIENCE OR RATIONAL THINKING ALLOWED IN THIS THREAD !!! why ? for them to eat, the food must be there on land in the first place. we are wondering how the food itself got to land. Remember, plants too were sea dwellers for a long time in the beginning, and when they started moving, animals/fishes started following them not very long after, some 30 or so mn years later (not a big number in grander scheme of things) Okay. The most logical explanation that I've come to understand (and this is idiotically simple ) is ... Tides. Tides. Earth has a very unique moon, due to its proximity and size. So, yeah, tides. Anyway, keeping on topic, the closest thing to evolutionary supernatural is this guy .. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Platypus. That's a mammal, fish, bird and reptile all rolled into 1. Or, the X-men of one of these types of species. Is a Mammal. Yet lays eggs. But feeds the child. Using abdomen coz it doesn't have nipples. Amphibian. Yet can't hold its breath for very long, like only minutes under water. Is born with teeth but they fall out very soon (What?!). Feeds through pores on body. Has shark like electric detection thing, can even detect motion of insect leg in water. Has a tackily tacked on almost fake looking duck bill on its butha. Webbed limbs. Lives in isolation. And if that wasn't enough, it is one of the extremely few mammals that is venomous. And its venom has no known cure. The f**k is this guy? JEEJAS. DishuBOSS
My wife always likes to sleep with windows and doors opened. At her place in Gurgaon her balcony had two doors, a wooden one and an iron made with metallic netting all over it. So she used to sleep with the wooden door opened while leaving the iron net door closed for cross-ventilation (she still does it at home now). One morning, I told her (she was my girlfriend then) that the previous night, while we were asleep in her bed, I saw a kid standing outside that iron net door, staring right at us. Also, I used to often remind her about it while talking on the phone (while I was at my home and she was all alone). She used to leave me messages in the night after the call, cursing me for scaring her. Edited April 17, 2013 by DishuBOSS
