Hey guys. I've been on the hunt for more details on the Crow Man myth and have found few other legends as well. I'll post here as soon as I've got it all sorted. Interesting stuff.

I looked up for the crow man myth but could not get much info...care sharing ?

I could not find anything online myself. But I asked a lot of people who were around that area and era and got a sh*t ton of information. The lack of online info makes me believe its an urban legend. However the consistency of the story from everyone is pretty amazing. Some masala of course crept in but the key points at consistent.

And there's also a case my grandfather told me while I was on about the crow man that happened to his father. Now what I need to know is should I include all of this in one post or break it up into a series of posts so discussing can be easier? Like our own episodes or something?

Thread is back on track ! The last couple of stories gave me shivers. :fear:

Sadly (or luckily) no paranormal experience here even after living adjacent to a kabristan (an active one as well) for 8 years or so. :/

Mom said she had numerous. Nada for me.

They fear for their kidneys :P

I’ve been searching for years online for a hint of the Crow Man myth, but it has been a futile search. For something that supposedly happened around the 60’s and 70’s its surprising that there isn’t a bit of concrete proof of this ever having happened. Not a scrap. That it can only be found in people’s memories is a queer thing. Perhaps this is why I find it so interesting. My dad swears by it, my mom says its true and a few neighbors and family acquaintances agree that it is something that actually occurred. From what I gathered from all of them I think something did happen. There are some things we will discuss at the end.

The haunting began sometime in the early 60’s. The building in question is an old black stone building. The entrances are arches of white stone. The windows are deep set, with iron bars, the sills are white. It’s a 3 storey building as far as I can remember and my parents and others I have spoken to agree. As the story goes, there were two brothers living on the second floor of the building. The younger one was married and had two kids. The older brother according to some was a widower in once case, a bachelor in another. Anyway the younger brother apparently swindled the elder one out of his share of some property and evicted him from the house. The elder brother spent most of his money on trying to fight for his share but he eventually died a pauper. The sightings of the Crow Man started soon after.

One evening a man, who lived on the third floor, came home from work scared out of his mind, babbling about a figure in black standing in the corner on the second floor landing near the door of the younger brother’s flat. At first glance he didn’t make much of it till he noticed something out of place. It was the figure of a man, but the head of a crow and it turned around and cawed at him. He ran up the stairs hysterical and had a fever for the next few days. The man in question is the father of my mother’s best friend. For those of you who have lived in these old buildings you will know that the corridors and staircases are not lit very well. Mostly low wattage bulbs were used, unlike the tubelights that we have right now. After this numerous people began to report the figure in black standing outside the second floor flat. The figure was always there every evening. (Waiting perhaps?)

My father related an incident that happened when he was about 15-16. (This would have been the late 60’s) My dad and his friends went in a group and dared anyone to enter the building in the evening, as we guys are prone to do at that age, being halfway between boys and men. One guy decided to do this and went in later that evening. A few minutes later he came out shivering and in hysterics. He had peed himself as well but did not talk about it. He never spoke about it so my dad does not know what exactly happened.

There is a chawl opposite the building and a lot of people there as well said sometimes you could see the shadow of a man with a crow’s head at the second floor window. My auntie who used to live in that building in the 70’s related how you could hear loud cawing from the second floor. Some say it was the Crow Man. Anyway the younger brother’s wife apparently left him and went away with the kids. (Who could blame her?) Soon after that the windows of that house never opened anymore. And crows began to cluster on the ledges outside. People by now were obviously scared out of their minds and decided to exorcise the place. They called a priest name Father Ligory to perform the ceremony. Apparently while performing the prayers the priest began to tremble and ran away from the building in a panic. No one could tell me why so I’m making an assumption that he seen or felt something there. A few months later the younger brother died alone in the house. His business had failed, he lost most of the property in bad deals and he had died a pauper. The Crow Man appearances ceased.

It’s an interesting myth because it’s something that happened for nearly 20 years and then just abruptly died out. Very few people know about it, or talk about it and even then its only people who were in that area and lived at that time. For some reason it wasn’t passed on to the next generation like other myths. No one ever came to claim that house, though I suppose it would pass on to the next of kin. My uncle who was a priest said he did know that Father Ligory was called to bless the building. He cannot confirm the rest.

Something did happen. Maybe a hallucination by the first guy followed by mass hysteria by everyone else. Remember this is the 60’s India we are talking about. People were much more superstitious then. As for me? I would love to believe this but its too fanstastical for me. It makes a good story but eventually its hard to corroborate. After all we are talking about memories of an event over 40 years old and the human imagination has a tendency to exaggerate. Not to mention I cannot find anything online. I plan on coming to Mumbai in September for business, and if I have the time I’ll look out for anything more I can find.

Till then imagine you’re all alone walking up a dark narrow staircase when you see a figure standing all in black before you. A normal man’s figure except it’s got the head of a crow. It turns and caws at you.
