Help with a new graphics card

Get a new SMPS, please get a new one before you regret the decision.

But I have the required power supply:( I don't get it...it's a 450w GPU and I have 600...most reviews say that it runs fine even on 500w...I'm not even going to overclock or anything...

Wattage is the last assurance of performance.

I have already told you the technical aspects of Cooler Master SMPS suffer heavily, most of them can hardly deliver their rated output for extended durations of time. Even the output is not 100% clean with high instances of ripple.

The following is a Cooler Master GX 650W review from [H]ard OCP. It promises 80+ Bronze Efficiency (failed), good build quality (depends on taste), AC-DC conversion (failed), price (PHAIL).

And this is supposed to be going up against Seasonic's excellent S12II series (by price) and Corsair's TX v2 series (price and accessibility).

CONCLUSION
The Cooler Master GX 650W is a mediocre power supply for couple of years ago, and an outright failure today. The Build Quality of the unit is nothing to write home about (unless it is a warning), the topology is old and outdated, and the exterior is flash over substance. Coupled with this we have mediocre voltage, poor by today's standards efficiency, and out of specification DC Output Quality. One upping this poor showing is that fact that the unit was completely unable to complete our load tests at 100v AC input.
As it stands, there really is not anyone that this unit would be a good fit for that we can think of, and certainly not for its intended crowd of "gamers." Cooler Master should be ashamed and owes all gamers and hardware enthusiasts an apology.

Cooler Master GX 750W review

Summary

Coolermaster has a decent 600 watt unit here. The unit does pretty well for stability and efficiency, doesn't get very loud, and... what? It's a 750 watt unit?

Facepalm.

Past Coolermaster units have done pretty well here in the lab, and I'm puzzled that this one has done so poorly. I hope that next time, if there is a next time, we'll have something worth getting excited about.

The Good:

  • appearance
  • enough cabling to handle anything a 750W unit can power
  • somewhat shallow depth

The Bad:

  • cannot handle heat at 750 watts
  • ripple issues on the 3.3V rail
  • questionable capacitor quality

The Mediocre:

  • voltage regulation

Alright, I shall look into this as well...I checked the prices in the market and I'm getting an asus gtx 660 2gb for 15190...should I go for that or will gigabyte be better? What's the difference? And I have an asus z

Z68 M-pro motherboard, so will having an asus GPU improve performance in anyway?

What is the core-clock of the ASUS GPU and the GIGABYTE GPU? Whichever has a higher one shall be the better one.

Other differences will be in the cooler shroud and fan layout. Also, technical details like MOSFET's and RAM chip placement varies from OEM to OEM. Both companies are equally good in this department so no need to worry.

No, nothing like that, you can have any graphic card with any motherboard. There is no company bias as far as I know.

Don't know why Alpha is suggesting for a new PSU. I am using a CM GX 650, haven't faced a single problem till now. Though, Corsair and Seasonic are two brands that have a reputation for high quality power supplies

that consistently earn high marks in technical reviews. But a new PSU in this case doesn't make sense.

those Seventeam units werecrap. The newer Enhance models are much better and are at least worthy of recommendation.

Because he has this --> Cooler Master eXtreme Power Plus / Pro / eXtreme II / Thunder.

In the face of Corsair and Seasonic's I would best avoid them, unless there are no alternatives.

Also prefer not to be blamed for a rigmarole later if OP's SMPS is a lemon.

You think GTX 660i is powerful enough to last till 2016... ? ..Can i play Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077 on high settings with it? :P

I will upgrade my PC in June(after E3) and planning to get GTX 660i with I7 cpu....

No, if you plan up-to 2016, you will need something much more substantial. An HD7950 3GB or higher is the minimum.

In-fact I would suggest wait till AMD releases the Sea Island cards (Q3 -->Q4 2013) and nVidia draws out Maxwell (2014).

I will upgrade my PC in June(after E3) and planning to get GTX 660i with I7 cpu....

Skip a Core i7, stick to a Core i5. Also, June Intel will release its Haswell processor line.

Right, so will the 660 non ti last me at least 2 years?

Depending from title to title and the fidelity of settings you use. Can last you two years but over-time you will have to settle for medium -->low detailing.

hahaha, thats a long time, and here i'm asking for two years. why i'm a little more cautious now particularly is that we are heading into the new generation...am i better off waiting till battlefield 4 comes out? are any nvidia cards lined up for that period? or will driver updates then be sufficient as i know some driver updates help fps a lot with some games

Honestly ,wait for a couple of next generation games to releases, gauge performance on current generation components (mid-range) and making the move will be the wisest path to take.

nVidia's next refresh will be in 2014, AMD plans to take out the Southern Island series late this year.

No, not really, unless you plan to take a GTX670 / HD7870 2 GB or better graphic card. Also nVidia drivers always mention the gain ratio in percentage, which looks good on paper but is useless in real world terms.

AMD drivers never explicitly mention any performance gains but their current BETA driver is good for me.

Price of GTX 680 and 7970 will drop once new gpus are out :D

HD7970 has been getting price drops, GTX680, don't really know.

This one is better -- Sapphire HD7950 3GB Vapor-X edition.

GTX 580 is still ~30k :\

All issues to be taken up with nVidia.

No, not enough. Get the HD7950 minimum or the HD7870's successor in the AMD HD8*** series.

I know you will buy an nVidia card in the end and justify it with some convoluted logic of better drivers.
