Hi

New on the forum. !!! and first impression..Awesome ! Just what i needed as am an ardent gamer.

Recently bought a Ps3 40GB in Bangalore. ( bundled with GT prologue). The experience is awesome except for a small problem.

My Ps3 makes a noticeable fan noise. It does not happen when i switch it on but into about 10-15 mins of gaming and then stays that way till i switch on..The sound is like the fan strainin itself to cool better ;)

Took it to the Sony Service center In Indiranagar and and they after checking the system for abt a day came back saying there is no sound.n fact He caled me over to the Son center..to my suprise there was no sound at all even wen i played for abt 1 hr.. he only thing was that tthere the cooling was very high .

Brought back home and there comes the sound again..Just dont know what cud be the problem ..tried changing the position, plug point etc ..no luck !!

..i spoke to the friendly Sony service guy and he offered as a special case to come over home some day and chk...

the set is still under warranty ..anyone with something similar or some solution will be greatly appreciated....

If the noise is noticeable beyond 6 feet distance then you might want to keep the console vertical. PS3 has a mammoth blower inside to throw dust and heat out.

Little fan noise is unavoidable, but PS3 is famous for its low operating noise compared to other consoles out there.

You might also want to keep the PS3 in a well ventilated place.

BTW, good buy there and playb3yond.

^^ R u sure that the console is kept in an open area...I mean that it should not be to close to any thing that might block the vent....I experienced similar prob but then I found out that I had not kept my console in a properly vente'd area....Also try keeping the windows of the room open with Fans / AC on so that the room is well ventelated.

i had a 60 gig u.s version earlier..the fan kicks out a lil early on 60gigs version.but i just bought 40 gb japanese ps3.that fan noise is not that high as compared to the 60gig u.s .anywayz the best way to ignore the noise of the fan is by increasing the volume of the tv(that is what i used to do with my 60gig)heheheand yup as maverick said do check out if its ventilated well..!

I have read it somewhere long time back, that vertical is the recommended way to keep the PS3. I keep mine vertical and that too not in a well ventilated place....Noise level is hardly noticable...I notice the minor humming when I go near to put a game or blu-ray.

Mine does not amke a difference even if vertically placed.. and about ventilation.. i guess i dont have too much options there... as my ps3 is next to my home e theatrand LCD TV where there is not much ventilation anyways... !! :)

Mabe i shud live with it..

I have this problem too. My PS3 has been in the vertical position ever since i bought it and at times the noise is very high. This doesn't happen regularly though but does happen and i have never played on the PS3 for longer than 2-3 hrs. Btw my PS3 in a very well ventilated place and on the adjacent, my AC is there which runs throughout the day

Till now, I've had only 2 occasions when the PS3 made some unusually high noise.

Once was when my room was as hot as an oven, and I'd played on the console for 4 hours straight.

The second time was when I'd popped in Uncharted a couple of days ago, and for the first 1.5 hours of gameplay, I could hear it working harder than usual. Don't really know if it was the drive or the fan though. Strangely, after the initial noise, the console was quiet for the next few hours of play.

I don't think its anything TOO serious to get worried about.

it is absolutely nothing to worry about, unless you put the PS3 in a closed box with no air passage and in the middle of the Thar desert.

My 6months old refrigerator makes more noise than the PS3(8 months old). I usually run Folding @ home during the night. Thats the most intensive processing that happens on my PS3 hardware. Yet i don't get up in the middle on the night out of any ps3 fan noise.

How much did you pay for the bundle? And where did you buy it from?

It seems to me now that the fan noise is dependent on what game you're running too. Uncharted continues to run with much higher noise than when playing Resistance or F1 CE. Burnout also seems quiet enough. But seriously, with Uncharted running, the noise is definitely more. Everything runs fine, just louder.
